  • Oprah Winfrey gave the commencement address at Colorado College's graduation ceremony Sunday morning, joining people such as Sandra Day O'Connor and Dick Cheney, who have also given commencement addresses in the last few decades.
Winfrey had intended to simply attend the graduation as a guest to lend support to a former student of The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in the South African village of Henley on Klip. After learning she'd be in the audience, college President Jill Tiefenthaler extended an invitation to Winfrey to address the graduates, which Winfrey accepted.
Winfrey has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world, making her one of the most respected and admired figures today. She also is a dedicated philanthropist. During a December 2002 visit with Nelson Mandela, she pledged to build a school in South Africa; today, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls provides an excellent education for 8th- to 12th-grade girls in South Africa. Winfrey has contributed more than $200 million toward providing education for academically gifted girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Winfrey is an Academy Award-nominated actress for her role in “The Color Purple,” earned critical acclaim in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and produced and acted in the Academy Award-winning film “Selma.” Winfrey starred in the Emmy-nominated HBO Films production “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and most recently portrayed “Mrs. Which” in Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” film adaptation from director Ava DuVernay.
Additionally, Winfrey is a founding donor of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2013, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, and in 2018, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored her with the Cecil B. deMille Award.

I don't really understand why there's too much backlash on her. Totally don't get it

Some people despise that which is good.

@@priorityemails319 Some. But I would say that most of the opposition to this or that person or thing is because of this: People have a tendency to pick their beliefs and affiliations like they are picking a sports team. More people need to really look and think for themselves instead of choosing any one cause, political party, system of beliefs, famous/influential person, etc etc and then just being the cheerleader without ever re-assessing what's being said or what is really happening. Entrenchment in this or that mindset or team without self-reflection leads people down dangerous roads and turns them into zealots. It is good to have great zeal and gusto, but not good to lose clear sight because of it.

Should have given those poor graduates free cars, they will never be able to afford one paying off that student debt.

@@reneeboley I agree - someone tried to shame her into paying off all the student debt like the benefactor did at Morehouse College. This level of entitlement thinking astounds me.

Carla Hayes what have half of these kids don’t to deserve a car after putting in almost minimal effort. They are not special for graduating college many adults do that every year. Work for something, earn your car. That is not her problem

She gives marital & parenting advice yet has neither a husband nor any
children. She’s worth billions yet calls for income equality. She has no
experience in politics yet tells people how to vote. She gives weight
loss advice yet appears in Weight Watchers ads from the neck up only
because she can’t lose weight herself. Why take her advice on anything?
