When they debuted on TV on June 30th 1952 it was quite a day overall. Ed Sullivan and his toast of the town debuted in 1948, it is the Birthday of Florence Ballard of The Supremes (1943-1976), it is also the Birthday of Cheryl Ann Tweedy of Girls Aloud who guest starred on the UK Soap Opera Coronation Street.
Irna Phillips mentored two of her writers: Agnes Nixon - Creator of One Life to Live in 1968, All My Children in 1970, and Loving with Doug Marland in 1983. Bill Bell - Creator of the Young and the Restless in 1973, and the Bold and the Beautiful in 1987. Irna also Created As The World Turns in 1956, Another World with Bill Bell in 1964, and assisted Ted and Betty Corday in creating Days of our Lives in 1965.
Also both Bill Bell and Agnes Nixon are alumni of Northwestesrn University as was Megan Markle. When The Bold & The Beautiful started in 1987 the premise was that Eric Forrester and Stephanie Douglas met in 1962. He gets "her" pregnant, her father finances forrester with $50,000.00 and in 1967 they have their first show and the rest is history. Also Chicago is the Birthplace of Soap Operas, Chess Records, Ebony Magazine, and Soul Train whose ripple effect continues to this day.
Also they did a similar Show when Coronation Street celebrated it's 50th Anniversary in 2010. They did a TV Movie called The Road To Coronation Street where Anthony McVay Simpson aka Tony Warren went through alot of Red Tape to get the Show on the air. Like their US Counterparts, it was the launching pad for Actors/Actresses like Patrick Stewart, Davy Jones, Peter Noone, and Sarah Lancashire, Joanne Froggat, Rob James Collier, and Suranne (Sarah) Jones. Others start on Coronation Street and do other Soaps like Emmerdale, and Eastenders.
Still one of the best hours of television ever. Loved this episode.
Alexandra on the organ! Love it.
In 1952, Guiding Light became the first radio show to make the transition from radio to television.
Awesome tribute to the legacy of the creator of Guiding Light and the actors that brought the scripts to life. 💗
This is beautiful and sad .
Love this episode!!!!!!!!! For me the MVP is Beth Ehlers as Irna Phillips!

This is a good time to pause.
In the UK in 2025 it's going to be major anniversaries for three soaps. 65 for coronation street, 40 for Eastenders and 30 for Hollyoaks.
I would have loved for a relative of Trudy Bauer's come to Springfield.
