It is hard to believe: in my mom's house, which has recently died, I found an old gramophone. Gramophone belonged to her father, who was shot by Stalin in 1938. Before that, he worked in Berlin and brought out this gramophone. And with that, I found a gramophone record of Martha Eggert! Records made in 1930!!!!
This woman is absolutely incredible. Wikipedia as of today (2013) says she lives on at 101. This aria was recorded sometime in her 90s. The beauty of tone, the sensitivity to lyrics, is awesome. And when you are older, you do have the life wisdom to render those lyrids better. She is one of the lucky ones of us, who has retained her full powers even into her 90s. We wish her good luck, and we envy her. Bravo to you, my dear.

And THAT’S how it’s done! At ANY age. What gorgeous, steady, unforced tones she produces at an age when, let’s be honest, most sopranos are dead. This was in 2002, I believe. She’s 90 here. She released a beautiful commercially recorded CD that year also. The “Rose Aria” from Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges has to be heard to be believed. The character is a 10 year old boy!! She was an artist.

Also beeindruckend finde ich es nicht, eher traurig. Mit dem Aufhören hast Du leider vollkommen Recht. Ich habe Jopi Heesters noch mit über 100 erleben müssen, weil ich nicht absagen konnte. Vermutlich konnte er selbst nichts dafür, aber schlimm, dass die, die es konnten, Würde und Kommerz nicht unterscheiden.
Sie singt grauenhaft. Ihre Zeit ist vorbei. Da kann man nicht einmal mehr an Jan Kiepura zurückdenken. Wenn sie eine Schellackplatte mit massenhaft Kratzern besungen hätte, wäre es noch gegangen, aber so ist es ein schlimmes Katzengejammer und sie weiß nicht, dass Schluss für sie schon vor 30 Jahren war. Aber das ist natürlich Ansichtssache.

I saw Marta Eggerth 3 times when she was in her nineties and was captivating each and every time. Very beautiful. R.I.P.
