Carlisle were heading out of the Football League as they were drawing 1-1 with Plymouth on the final day of the 1998/99 season. On-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass ventured up for a corner in injury time and smashed in a winner to save Carlisle.

"22 players inside the Plymouth penalty area"
That corner taker must've had long legs.
😂
The Ref took the corner for Carlisle, the FA gave them special dispensation.
@@the_red_barron1002 lol
😂😂😂
gold 😂😂
Butterfly effect: Jimmy Glass doesn't score, Carlisle gets relegated, Nigel Pearson sinks into obscurity, never rises to the heights of managing Leicester, doesn't save them, they don't win the league.
Knock on effect
Interesting thought!
Very good !!!!
And even more disturbingly, perhaps Leicester’s owner may not have been killed.
Chaos theory
Scarborough would never return to the football league, and were liquidated in 2007 (but there’s a phoenix club called Scarborough Athletic). Carlisle were relegated briefly in the mid-2000’s but have otherwise remained in the football league. Just amazing the effect that this goal had for both clubs.
Nice Punk picture
Was a disaster for Scarborough hope they eventually return again.
Yeah we never came back coupled with fraud by John Russel. We still pull 1000+ attendances!
Yeah Scarborough’s capacity now is about 2000 and usually gets filled. They only get an away end when they play Whitby as teams in that league don’t tend to travel unless it’s a derby
@@vMoorey too big for the current league 😁😆
Nigel Pearson saved a poor Carlisle side back in 1999, yet the Watford management couldn’t trust him in 2020
That was then, this is now. Wouldn't be surprised if he did or said something stupid behind closed doors.
John Martinez he probably called someone an ostrich.
MemeLordWeekly lol but why didn’t they wait till the pl season ended so they can sort issues out easier
Carlisle we weren’t poor we were fuckin abysmal
Pearson saved Leicester from relegation then they fired him and BOOM leicester won the premier league. Watford believed in de javu but did get relegated
Man City 4, York 0 in division 2, how times have changed.
Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Liverpool.
Indeed times have changed!
It's incredibly what money can do.
I was about to say that myself lol. York have since sunk 4 tiers and Man City well everyone knows.
division 2 is the championship
@@joshm4807 it was actually league 1 that was the championship back then in 1998-99 it was the premiership then league 1 then league 2 then league 3
What is it with Nigel Pearson and great escapes he's Harry Houdini in disguise surely
Did a great job with Watford
John Martinez he took them from 7 points from safety to 3 points above the drop zone before he was sacked with 2 games remaining . Don’t think it’s fair to put the blame on him for watford going down
Shudhanshu Shekhar Mishra maybe. It’s hard to say. He would have been better there than Hayden Mullins
@Shudhanshu Shekhar Mishra he's a bit inconsistent in my opinion. Think the only player that deserves to go back to the premier league is Sarr
@Shudhanshu Shekhar Mishra true but he is 38 years old so he's not got much left
I grew up as a Scarborough fan but was born in 1995 so was too young to understand when this actually happened. It’s so interesting to see such a pivotal movement in my clubs history preserved like this! Especially given our Phoenix club Scarborough Athletic have just been promoted to the National League North!
And just a couple of goals short of a playoff spot this year. Unlucky, best of luck next year
As a Carlisle fan IMO this is one of the best moments in football history.
As a Plymouth fan I'd love to say that that was a brilliant moment.
THE best moment in football history or sports history
Jimmy Glass and Sunderland beating Leeds in the '73 Cup Final are far far ahead of anything in footballs greatest moments (a universe ahead of Man U getting 2 flukes in the EC Final the same year as Glass). Big shame the plastic Sports franchise PL and its plastic sports franchise clubs and franchise owners are killing the game completely. NOTHING that will EVER happen in the P(lastic) league will come close to this.
Jeff wasn't bad back in the 90's like
@Jamie McCarthy I'm a geordie so yes it was, sorry this upset you
Aye it were Jamie like eh, so wisht ya gob pal
Carlisian
@Jamie McCarthy Where are you from Jamie?
Hmm
Still the greatest thing I've ever seen in football. Sure, it's not a Champions League or World Cup final, but my god what must it have been like to be a Carlisle fan and be there that day (or a poor Scarborough fan!)
I was there as a Carlisle fan & when we scored I couldn't believe it. There was a massive pitch invasion and the game wasn't finished, I remember thinking please don't let them penalise us for going on the pitch.
Scarborough fans. Don't count your chickens before Jimmy Glass.
You know it's old when Jeff looks like that
Ye
Or the fact that Scarborough is being talked about
@@workingtitle7049 haha very true
Cheers jeff
what a well thought out comment which literally says “ you know it’s old when the guy looks young “ well out mate
Sheffield Wednesday beating Liverpool 1-0, that's 90s as Liverpool fan.
Early 00's were a nightmare for Liverpool too. Mainly in the premier league.
@@Onmysheet Not really 00s at least Liverpool were winning things & getting Champions League football, unlike 90s
Aye and remember plenty of locals absolutely disgusted that we appointed a foreigner instead of one of the boot room boys.
@@lfcspectre4335 Maybe 2010 - 2013 was another bad era for Liverpool.
Wanted to try being in a city fan in 99. We was in the 2nd division.
I remember watching this as a kid. My Dad going mad celebrating even though he didn't support Carlisle. The goalkeeper of all people
Jeff was certainly more mild mannered in his younger years.
Yeah lol can you imagine if this was now? He would have been about a 100 times more frantic. He goes mental when it’s a penalty for Stevenage these days
@@reubydoobydoo1383 You mean Carlisle?
Dont really think hed celebrate a carlisle goal as when they were in league 2 we were rivals
No he was just told to ham it up and now its just beyond over the top to the point I switch him off,, it was fine until he became a parody.
Jeff is miles better and funnier than the 2 previous planks (keys & gray)
I was at the Scarborough ground that day having driven up that morning from Oxfordshire. After the final whistle the chairman was in the stand, magnum of champagne in hand, waiting to celebrate when news came through about the Carlisle goal. I've never seen an atmosphere change so quickly. The chairman made a brief speech saying we will return, but of course they never did.
98/99 had so many famous last minute goals.
Yeah Dickov, Glass, Solksjaer
Still the most unexpected, most unbelievable moment in football history for me. Absolute scenes when that went in. I'll never forget my dad finding me on the terrace when the ball hit the net and saying 'it was Jimmy Glass' I've told the story about a million times and will never stop haha
It was certainly unexpected, as a neutral who happened to be at Scarborough that day I can well remember the shock and disbelief rippling out from people who had radios or get calls or texts with the Carlisle score (no internet smartphones back then).
In terms of shock factor; everyone in the box and it happens to fall to the keeper, yes it's a surprise but I think sometimes it gets a bit blown out of proportion. Nobody would have been terribly surprised at the start of day to see Carlisle win and Scarborough draw. It was memorable though for how it happened.
It's not really up there with Denmark winning the European Championship in 1992 after failing to qualify in terms of shock value, or even Newport County's great escape that sent Hartlepool down.
@RW-nr6bh that's the point though. It's the "how it happened" that made it one of the greatest moments in footballing history and why it's still spoken about 25 years later. There's great escapes every season, but there's never been another one where an on loan goalkeeper who only ever made 3 appearances for the club scored with the final kick of the entire season
Amazing how non dramatic Soocer Saturday was back then. Jeff barely seems bothered compared to what it became! Especially for such a massive moment!
Exactly!
U should of heard the live radio of the Carlisle game was crazy
I did.
Nearly crashed the car when Jimmy scored.
💪
What I’ve never seen is, why did Carlisle sell their ONLY keeper on the deadline day, and how and why were they able through the League to get a keeper on-loan?
As to the latter, I can see dispensation granted if a club’s keepers get injured, but how is it possible when the only keeper is transferred out???
2themoon Tony Caig was the goalkeeper sold he went to Blackpool and an on loan keeper was injured and sent back to his parent club leaving us keeper less.. in came jimmy
You have to understand that in lower league english football, sometimes a transfer offer comes in that a club simply cant refuse do to their financial situation. They most likely didnt want to sell their keeper but had no choice
@@joehaigh2811 thats not true, no club would sell their only goalkeeper on deadline day without there being other circumstances. It makes absokutelt zero sense.
@@theadventuresofsteve-marco6837 like i said some clubs have no choice cos of finances, a figure like 200k could be the difference between the club going into administration and staying afloat for a few years
@@joehaigh2811 well a 3 second internet search shows they weren't about to go into administration. Selling your only goalkeeper pretty much ensures relegation.
Jimmy Glass was my old goalie coach when I was a Palace youth team player in ‘90!
Could you imagine being amongst those Scarborough fans when someone pointed out there had been a goal
I don't have to imagine it; I was there as a neutral. It was very strange. There was disbelief at first. This was pre-smartphone days, word filtered out from people with radios or who'd received calls from friends. It sort of rippled out through the crowd like an invisible wave.
We spent the next two years of break time shouting JIMMY GLAAAAAASS every time we went for a 'hit and hope' shot
The most 90s thing about this is the fact the scores have pool numbers next to them
Mark Crossley, SWFC goalkeeper, scored a last minute equaliser in a 3-3 draw with Southampton. 28/12/06. Great game and all good goals. Check it out. Mark carried a bit of extra padding in those days and I well remember him slowly making his way back to his own goal after heading the equaliser. Top lad!
I always thought the signing of Jimmy Glass was allowed because of injury, I never realised they'd actually sold their only keeper. Very controversial given the impact it had on Scarborough who never returned to the football League and were liquidated in 2007.
Agreed! I was unhappy at the breach of the rules when it happened; I was gutted/seething when he scored the decisive goal. A real "sliding doors" moment. I have nothing against Jimmy Glass personally; I read a newspaper article about him & he came across really well; very down-to-earth. But I still feel that Carlisle Utd got away with a big one there, and I have held the Football League in lower esteem ever since.
@@FanofAslan No breech of rules happened. Rules was put in place for emergency loans for goalkeepers only before the start of the season. We signed a loan goalie when we sold our keeper, the loan was recalled with 3 games to go and our back up keeper was injured.
@@craigfs81 Oh, thank you for this. If, as you say, the rule for emergency loanees was in place at the start of the season, then I have to agree that no rules were breached.
I suspect that rule was put in place to help cash-strapped lower league clubs, who could then afford to sell their permanent players and offload the wages, and then bring in a quick fix if needed. I don't like it, but in hard times I understand its need.
My own opinion is that clubs should have to field an outfield player in goal if caught short. According to The Totally Football Show podcast I listen to, Independiente in Argentina have just done this in a recent game!
@@FanofAslan Rule was agreed by all the football league teams at the time of it being created. Scarborough and Hartlepool tried to complain but the higher ups in their club had agreed to the rule.
It was put in place as it was deemed by whoever came up with the idea that goalkeeper is a specialist position and under the circumstances of a team recalling their loan player back and the back up keeper being injured it was approved that an emergency loan could be made for the position of goalkeeper as agreed in the rule.
Couldn't be any clearer really. Whether that rule still exists, I don't know as it is over 20 years ago. Also over countries will likely have different rules.
@@craigfs81 Thank you. If that rule was agreed upon, Scarborough can have no complaints. Thank you for your replies. It's good to exchange info without the all-too-common insults we read on these chats.
I don't know either whether the rule still exists today. I play FM, and I've not seen it there. Mind you, I haven't left myself without a keeper. I shall look into it. If you find out, please do let me know. I wish you well.
Sky sports retro is the 🐐
@` I don't get it
Not really, a much better edited video of this, including a video of the actual goal had been up on UA-cam for over a decade, but was taken down by Sky when they put this video up
Not any more - it’s full of clickbait troll videos..
The simplicity, and non modern day overhype of am unbelievable moment, being delivered by Jeff Stelling, in a professional manner, on the final day of a season. THIS is the real Soccer Saturday, and the reason it has become an institution.
"Emotional maturity is positively correlated to a person's age"
**Laugh in Jeff Stelling**
Cannot get enough of this....ardguably the best moment in football history!

Man city 4 - York 0 an actual tier 3 match ;)
only the oil man saved them inbreds!!👊👊👹
And now they have players like Aguero, KDB and Kompany.
Your neighborhood friend Kompany's not there
Massive club
Mick Foskett well they were almost going bust due to the previous owner’s assets being frozen in Thailand so tbh I think they’ll take being invested in and the success it brought
This is legendary. The ultimate escape act. Shame Scarborough would later go kaputsky largely because of this relegation.
To be fair, it was problems with their ground that really killed Scarborough; they'd probably have gone bust sooner or later no matter what division they were in. Plus they were owned at the time by someone who nearly ended up killing Exeter City a few years later, so if they hadn't been relegated, he might well have stayed at Scarborough and bought about their demise even quicker.
Our chairman was a total fraud and Anton Johnson had plunged us well into debt anyways. As much as I hate to say it, we probably would've gone bust regardless in the years that followed. Though us getting into this situation to begin with was much the fault of our old manager Mick Wadsworth, form greatly improved once Colin Addison was brought in, but too little.. far too late.
You have to feel bad for the Scarborough fans who were celebrating while they were actually down
Well what do they say, shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch?

Those were the days...Back when the BBC, ITV and C4 had actual quality programmes. Now it’s all gone to ruin - they can’t compete with the vast choice of channels, and streaming services so have to produce stripped down, budgeted shows as they simply can’t compete on a bigger scale.

Despite following Argyle, this was quite an epic moment. I’m pretty sure Carlisle were going to be liquidated had that goal not happened.
Feel bad that it would eventually happen to Scarborough but delighted they are now flying high in the sixth tier
Man City had 350,000 turn up for that Division 2 game against York at Maine Road. At least that's what I'm led to think based on the number of supposed life long supporters they seem to have all of a sudden.
Actually it was 30'000 and I was one of em seeing that I've supported City for 37 years
Legend has it that man is still laying there staring blankly at the sky...
Goalkeeper that was signed after deadline day scores in time that should've been added on at the end of the first half. Doesn't sound quite as magical.
On a positive note Scarborough Athletic, the club that was formed after Scarborough were wound up, have just won promotion to the national league North.

If it had been the PL we'd never hear the end of it. Truely amazing
A great example of why to never celebrate before the whistle is blown.
Another example is when Man Utd fans cheered thinking they had won the Premier league back in 2012 as QPR were beating Man City 2-1. But in extra time of that match, Man City scored 2 goals meaning that Man City won the league.
1:55 - Man City crushing in D2 lol

I was at the Scarborough Peterborough game (Peterborough fan). The mood changed quickly when the news from carlise came through. 😂
Wonderful for Carlisle and as others have said, so tragic for Scarborough fans. That's the beautiful game summed up. Forget the Premier drivel for a bit. Go for an afternoon to your local lower league club and you'll have a great time. Small clubs survive on a pittance. You can always watch Super Sunday as well.
Well said. I'm a Red Devil, but many, many happy memories of watching Droylsden FC as well.

If anyone doesn’t understand the difference between Chelsea and city then this season Chelsea we’re in the chase for the premier league four points off, loosing 3 games, finishing 3rd and qualifying for the champions league. City played York in division 2.
