  • In this video, we'll compare the two best podcasting microphones for beginners - the Samson Q2U and the ATR2100x.
    Samson Q2U - bhpho.to/30r9CYR
    ATR2100x - bhpho.to/37DJZXd
    3x Criteria For Narrowing Down Our Choices
    1. Dynamic vs Condenser
    Dynamic microphones with cardioid polar patterns (or pickup patterns) are ideally suited for home recording (which is where most podcasters record their episodes).
    Condenser microphones are more sensitive, pick up a lot of background noise, and are only useful in professional recording studios.
    For that reason, we don't recommend the Blue Yeti USB microphone (which is a USB condenser microphone).
    2. Under $100
    While more expensive podcasting microphones can make your podcast sound amazing, you don't need to break the bank to get high-quality audio recordings. In fact, you don't have to spend more than $100!
    There are some great, low price options in the beginner podcast price range.
    That's why microphones like the Rode Procaster, Shure SM7B, and Heil PR40, should be considered investments for later down the road in your podcasting journey.
    We also can't recommend the Audio-Technica ATR2100 anymore, seeing as it's been discontinued and replaced with the ATR2100x (more on that in a minute).
    3. Plug And Play
    When looking at entry-level podcast microphones, ease of use is critically important. You should be able to plug the microphone directly into your computer without needing a bunch of extra gear.
    For that reason, Rode Podmic is also out of the running. It's an XLR only microphone, so you'd also need to purchase an XLR cable and audio interface to record with it and that pushes the budget over $100.
    That leaves us with just two options - the Samson Q2U and the Audio-Technica ATR2100x.
    ===COMPARISON===
    🎤 Accessories that come in the box for each microphone (03:20)
    Samson Q2U
    - Mic Stand
    - Micro-USB to USB cable
    - XLR cable
    - Pop filter/windscreen (helps cut down on plosives)
    Audio-Technica ATR2100x
    - Mic Stand
    - USB-C cable
    - USB cable
    - XLR cable
    (You can pick up a $3 foam cover on Amazon if you end up choosing the ATR2100x - amzn.to/2C7DbV1)
    🛠 Build Quality (04:37)
    Both microphones have a lot of the same features
    - Headphone jack for zero-latency monitoring
    - XLR and USB connections
    - Volume/gain controls
    🎧 Audio Quality (05:43)
    This is the side-by-side sound test. Click the time stamp to go directly to the test.
    ===FINAL RECOMMENDATION===
    With nearly identical features, sound quality, and accessories, we think the Samson Q2U is a steal compared to the ATR2100x and is our go-to microphone for new podcasters.

    I have 2 Samsun Q2Us and am quite happy with the results. I've not had an audio issue that wasn't relatively easily fixed in post.
    I bought the mics originally knowing little about them or audio production aside from a couple of UA-cam videos and letting price be my guide. I wanted a Shure mic but it wasn't in the budget. In the end, I'm happy with my Samsuns and will be buying 2 more for 4 hosts.

    I used both of those a lot and really have come to love the Samsun sound! The AT2100x is okay hut more raw to me. I can’t imagine worrying about the stand too much when you should get a boom for it anyway and those are about $14. The thing I love about the $60ish price point is then it’s easy to upgrade later if somone decides to have cohost or meet multiple guest.

So let's say if the mic is more in the back of the desk and maybe I'm leaning backwards in my chair it might be half to 0.7meters between my mouth and the mic. Would this be a problem when I'm speaking?

    Awesome - thanks! The issue we ran into with a Steren mic we got recently to record audio books with - we are both on Macbook Airs. Apparently the computer did not have enough power to power the mic - so we had to also get a mixer/soundboard to power it.
    Would we have to do the same with the Samson Q2U? Or will it be plug and play??? thanks!!! we don't want to have to get a second mixer, and I need a second station to do podcasts while book recording continues. I do see the post below on USB plugs.
    ALSO if you need to have headphones - because doing interviews - where would you plug those in? I currently use a Sennheiser headset with mic plugged into my headphone jack on computer. Or how would a headset relate to the mic? Thanks so much for all your great info!!!

    Especially as more people working from home due to covid, almost no one's used acoustic treatments to reduce annoying reverb times for better sound - and intelligibility. Acoustic foam is designed for the task, but tapestry or other fabric can make a big improvement. Target sells foam mattress toppers starting at $10.

If you are doing an interview-style podcast, you would need to connect the headphone to either the computer or mixer to listen to all participants -- right? If I connected the headphone to the mic, I would think that I would only be able to hear myself -- is that correct?

    D A M N. I added about 30 videos to watch later on which mic to choose. Your was the first one that I watched. And now I feel like I don't actually need to watch any other video. Thanks for such a great and honest review!

    Hey Buzzsprout, great video, thanks a lot, that really helped a lot in this jungle of decisions. Just another question: I already own a Zoom H5 audio recorder with XLR input, would you still recommend the Samson over the Rode PodMic?

    • @Buzzsprout
      @Buzzsprout  3 роки тому

      Hey! If you already have a microphone stand or boom arm, then we would recommend the PodMic, but if you are trying to keep costs down, go ahead and go for the Samson Q2U! Either is a great option.

    I have the SAMSON Q2U and it's perfect. Easy to get in Australia via Store DJ. The Audio Technica ATR2100x is hard to obtain in Australia. A bit tough getting items via Amazon during COVID-19. Store DJ is fantastic.

    Hi Albin, thank you for this test which I find very helpful. There is only one criteria in the test that I miss: If you are looking for mics under 100$ without the need to buy extra-gear (such as an AD-interface), shouldn't you then connect the mic via USB to hear how well the built-in DA interface of the mic works? All best and greetings from northern Germany!

    The Q 2U was so much crisper, brighter. I'm leaning to that model.

    Hi, this was so helpful! I’m planning on starting a fiction podcast, and want to do sound effects as well. Would the Q2U be decent for that? I’m not looking for perfect sound. If not, can you recommend a modestly priced budget mic that I can do both voices and sound effects outside?
