The Wii U can actually run GameCube games natively, and they could've easily just given us that backwards compatibility as an option. Genuinely one of the only complaints I had with the Wii U
At first the wii was backwards compatible with GameCube games, later versions removed backwards compatibility. I wish they would just let us have it, they know people want it there. Xbox is the only one that does focus on it, Nintendo seems more interested in charging us to play our old games again, and sony... it's more complicated. But now they're doing the same.
Same with the 3DS. Those systems played GBA games natively, just not via the cartridges.
Such a shame given the small library the WiiU ended up having. (which is why I got an OG Wii) Coulda been the equivalent of an OG fat PS3
@@derealized797 LOL only 20 ogxbox games work on xbox one... not a single xbox console has backwards compatibility, all they have is disc checking software to let you play emulated games available on the store (of which there are laughably few selections)
The weird thing is you can pull up an original Wii menu on the Wii U and the Wii at least the regular version played Gamecube games so its kind of strange. I guess it's the whole idea of reverse compatibility being erased after each generation from Gamecube-Wii, Wii-Wii U, GB to GBC to GBA, GBA to DS, DS-3DS. I could go on its just crazy to think about.
actually the Wii U is perfectly cable of playing GameCube games through the same "channel" the Wii did (both versions, the family version did not lose GameCube support, just the GameCube disc support), it's complicated, something to do with turning off cores, when the cpu architecture is very similar. In any way if you mod your Wii U you can play GameCube games at pretty much the exact same performance as a Wii

If anyone wondering whats going on, The wiiu disc drive physically CANNOT read GC discs simply because nintendo didn’t put the hardware to keep the disc in place in the wiiu disc drive.
use homebrew, then DVDs and GC discs will work… you can even play Blu-Rays apparently
From what I remember, GC discs don't work because the part that holds the smaller disc in place isn't in the Wii U's disc drive. If that's true, no amount of homebrew software can change this... (You'd have to modify the hardware instead).
I don't believe gc disks work, but you can still play gc isos on wii u.
No, the Wii U's optical drive will not read media that isn't a Wii or Wii U disc. It does not matter if you softmod the console or not. I don't know where you get this information from, did you make it up?
Only early Wii models can read DVDs. Later Wii models used a restricted optical drive that can't read DVDs, and they can't be modded for burned Wii/GC backups either.
@@jtchoi2003 I think he got confused because the wiius disks were a modified Blu ray disk. It still doesn't mean that the wii u is capable of reading a Blu ray disk though.

What's odd is that the wiiu hardware can play gamecube games, it's just the disk reader dosen't support it. Though if you have some modding skills, you can get it to work
Even if you somehow made the the optical drive fit GC discs, wouldn't the operating system spit it out as an invalid disc anyway?
@@jtchoi2003Nintendont is a homebrew app for the Wii that will load GameCube ISO files from a USB drive. It will also run on the Wii U if you use a USB adapter for the GameCube controllers. It's not an emulator like Dolphin. Instead the Wii U has hardware similar enough to the GameCube to run GameCube games.
There's no reason that Nintendo couldn't have made the Wii U backwards compatible with the GameCube apart from the fact that they didn't want to. All they would have had to do is make the optical drive capable of reading GameCube discs. They already made the USB GameCube controller adapter for Smash. Maybe they could've made a USB memory card reader, though Nintendont can store your GC save files on a disk instead.
Nintendont can also enable the Wii Mini & the later models of Wiis that didn't have the GameCube ports to play GameCube games without emulation.

The Wii U only accepts Wii and Wii U discs, even though the Wii accepts GameCube discs.

The console might get damaged or corrupted, I did it once and when I tried to use the wii mode the screen just flashed red then a black screen

GameCube discs are mini digital video discs, not compact discs like you claim.
Edit: either way optical media is mostly obsolete.
Later Wii consoles removed the GameCube compatibility.

Wii U not supporting GameCube games (by default) is pretty much like DSi & 3DS not supporting GBA games, or the Nintendo DS not supporting GB(C) games.
Any veteran Wii U fan knows that it would have made more sense to do the test in Wii Mode. After all, Wii games are only read there, so if the hardware was present for the disc holder, why would the GameCube games magically work in Wii U Mode?

Both the Wii and Wii U can actually read DVDs and play them when running a homebrew video player application of some sort. Pretty much they don’t natively support it as the console would of otherwise been significantly more expensive because of Toshiba’s licensing costs to use the DVD format.

The Wii was at one point going to play DVDs, but if they did I think Nintendo would have to give Dolby half of their profits for Wiis sold, so Nintendo removed it, however if you have an original Wii you could hack the system and bring back the DVD functionality. I saw a video of someone doing that actually. Pretty cool.

The wiiU is fully capable of playing GameCube games. Nintendo just blocked the ability using someware for some reason. By jailbreaking the wiiU, you can make it play GameCube games.

My wii broke and I had to take it apart the disc drive is accually pretty cool with these sliding arm thingies to hold the gcn discs. The drive is like 90 percent of the wiis size and I can see why nintendo didn't want to put in in the wii u with it already costing so much bc of the game pad

yes, what it comes down to is that later model Wii and Wii U hardware can't read Gamecube discs. If you have a homebrewed system, you can run gamecube games perfectly off an .iso
WiiU is picky about how it eats its GameCube games; you’ve got to rip them and copy them to a SD card, then the WiiU will play them! (Assuming it also has NintenDon’t)

I was thinking that if the Wii U does take the Game Cube disc, you would get an error message on the Wii U Menu, and then you would go to the Wii Menu. From what I heard, I knew the Wii U would not accept Game Cube disc, but it surprises me that it spits the disc out. It makes me wonder, did the disc slot read you were putting a disc in, so it sees if it's big enough to accept, but if it's small enough, it spits it out? If anything with a round end gets put in, is it the same result?

The wii literally has a full gamecube inside it and the wii u has a full wii mini imside it, it would be costly to put a amecube in the wii u with the wii
