  • Albrecht Dürer came from Nuremberg in Germany; a city which, in the 15th and 16th centuries, was one of Europe’s most important. Part of the Holy Roman Empire, Nuremberg was a sophisticated, well-connected trading hub.
    Through paintings, drawings, prints, and letters, our exhibition 'Dürer's Journeys: Travels of a Renaissance Artist' brings to life this art history megastar and the people and places he visited.

    I think you need to be more careful about making absolute statements as you did. Nuremburg DID have guilds in the metal working trades from at least the latter 16th century for a couple of hundred years, and I would suspect other industries as well. It may be true that N did not have guilds in the visual arts, or at the time of Durer, but the absolute is certainly not correct. Good history is about qualifications.
