Odd parallel because there are things called match-ups in tennis. Serena is a faster, stronger, more athletic and more versatile hard hitter than Maria so she always had a clear advantage, especially after Maria lost her serve permanently after shoulder surgery. Cornet has 25 career top 10 wins, she is always dangerous and gives a good fight. I think she benefits from the underdog position, she just fights and thinks less. Against other players, she starts to make some odd decisions or checks out mentally throughout 'easier' matches. Makarova also falls in that category (32 top 10 wins).
Alize Cornet is like 10,000 piece puzzle. I can't figure her out. Against the best players she's always a tough out. She hits the ball hard, runs fast and has beautiful variety to her game. But she'll lose in the first round to qualifiers. She never maximized the talent we all knew she had
