This was the first and favourite catalogue that I owned and I thumbed through the pages daily. Eventually at Christmas I bought the R.170 GWR Freight set with the tips from my paper round. (Just over £20) The Pannier tank and wagons are still running on my railway. The tunnel mouths and other items are also being used. Can you believe that it’s nearly fifty years ago, I don’t feel that old. Another fantastic video, many thanks for the last 12 months, I’m looking forward to more great content in the New Year. Have a great Christmas, I hope Santa brings you something nice.
The R 170 was the set I got for Christmas of c75/76, ish. I rember my dad taking me to the local model railway shop, and he said "you have a look in the window, whilst I go and talk to the man inside. and you can have any set you want" I picked this set as it had more with it. Sadly I no longer have the items,.... !
Hi Oscar, another enjoyable video I received the RS608 Flying Scotsman train set in early 1970's as a Christmas present still going strong to this day.
Hello again Oscar, thoroughly enjoyed todays video. Brought back vivid memories from the 1970's of my own Flying Scotsman and Teak Thompson style coaches. You had a nice find in those wagons, be great to see them on the layout as part of an all military train. Wishing you, Roberta and Billy a Merry Christmas, Catch you soon, Regards Rob & Sue.
Good morning Rob terrific to hear the video brought back fun memories, one of the Tri-ang Classics, I was very pleased to find those wagons and looking forward to getting them on the railway in running condition. Wish both yourself and Sue all the best for the festive season. Oscar
Great video as always Oscar. Always a pleasure to start Sunday with you. Loved seeing the Flying Scotsman charging round . It’s a great locomotive to watch. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm for the hobby. I wish you and your family a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Roy.
Good morning Roy great to hear you enjoyed that and thanks so much for looking in over the past months and taking the time to comment, very much appreciated. Wish you and your family all the best for the festive season. Oscar
Very evocative video Oscar. The 1975 catalogue was included in my first electric train set which I received for Christmas that year. It contained the black freelance 0-4-0 engine, a Cadbury van, Norstand wagon and Shell tanker all mounted on the same long wheelbase Hornby chassis. Crikey I looked through that catalogue so much, drooling over the contents! Then, almost a decade later my dad bought the R608 Flying Scotsman set for me from a second hand shop in Doncaster. I still have the tender, a couple of green wheels and the front bogie! The Scotsman looks fantastic at express speed with the valve gear working furiously doesn't it? Super footage. Thank you for a lovely trip down memory lane. Regards, Antony.
Good morning Antony thanks for looking in and sharing your memories of the catalogue. Glad you enjoyed the video of the Scotsman at speed on the railway, a lot of fun and fascinating to watch the valve gear as you say. All then best. Oscar
Remember the catalogue coming out. In 1976 as a lowly first year apprentice I was on £26.00 a week, my new Casio FX39 calculator cost £19.95 (very vague memory on that) needed for college, but trains were expensive!
Thanks for breezing through the '75 catalogue Oscar. Can't remember exactly but I think it was the first catalogue I ever got. Bit pointless as we had the family three rail dublo and I had the hand me down Clockwork hornby 0. Just sometimes something specific in one of your productions really twangs a memorable experience from one's youth. I'll buy you a drink sometime when I'm next in the land of the Angles
Hi Oscar, I can remember buying that 1975 catalogue with my Mum at a toy shop in Hove and the joy of browsing through it and day dreaming on the bus all the way back home. I treasured that catalogue and I still have it now. It’s odd now to think that the catalogue commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway whilst next year will be the 200th anniversary, how time flies. Thank you again for opening that “time portal” every Sunday and I wish you and yours a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year
Thanks for looking in Simon and sharing your memories of the catalogue, great to hear you enjoyed the video. Wish you and your family all the best for the New Year. Oscar
A couple of months ago, I found an unboxed but pristine Tri-Ang Scotsman and chuffing tender on ebay and managed to get it for a fair price too. After a well deserved service and remagnetizing, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it pull seven Tri-Ang Thompson coaches around. These are spectacular models, even all these years later.
Good morning Oscar it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire again and I hope you are OK. Great to see your Flying Scotsman locomotive and teak coaches, what a wonderful sight. I've said it lots of times before that your railway brings back so many happy railway memories, both in the hobby and when I worked for British Rail. I shall continue watching your wonderful railway in 2025. Well its time to have my cup of tea and a toasted tea cake. Have a wonderful Christmas time with your family Oscar keep safe and best wishes for the new year Oscar. 👍🚂🎄
Good morning Martin thanks again for looking in and all your support over the past months its very much appreciated. It's great to hear the videos bring back happy memories Wish you and your family all the best for the festive season. Oscar
Hello Oscar. I saved up and bought the "sound" version of that FS in the 1970s. Cost me £10 or £12 from memory. It never ran particularly well so last year, after returning to the hobby, OOBill kindly re-motored it, and now now runs better than it ever did. Thanks for the entertainment in 2024. I wish you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year
Good morning Stephen great to hear you still have your original from the 70s. Great to hear you enjoyed the video, wish you and your family all the best for the coming year. Oscar
I swapped my scalextric set for the flying Scotsman and coaches plus a 2nd radius oval and points both our sets were nearly new out parents agreed it’s was a very fair swap the lad was a friend of my mate Giles who’s brother was bass player in culture club (boy George ) 😊 Merry Christmas Oscar to you and family Mark 🎅🏼🧑🎄
Good morning Mark thanks thanks for looking in. Sounds like a terrific swap. Definitely remember Culture Club.. Wish you and your family all the best for the best of season. Oscar
Having watched the video right through now, I think it is time to reacquaint myself with that catalogue. (just as soon as I get over the dizziness from watching the Flying Scotsman traveling at high speeds)? I have memory of only one of the teak coaches in our collection, I'm afraid.. We certainly do not have a full rake of them? Have a nice Christmas Oscar, drive carefully if you are out and about? Most importantly, don't overdo the Christmas dinner... Always leave room for dessert? Incidentally, One of the lifting bridges came up on the auction site just recently? I missed out on it, unfortunately.. But now I know that they did actually exist?

Good morning Rob definitely some interesting items within this catalogue, a lifting bridge showed up in one of the early Tri-ang catalogues, but from what I've read the item was never brought to market. Wish you and your family all the best for the festive season. Oscar
Hi Oscar, I never thought that it made it to the shops either? But one was up for sale, described as a "Tri-ang Lift Bridge" ... So maybe a few were made? @@oscarpaisley
Oh how wonderful this has taken me right back to been 9 (9 and half) years old. I got the R170 GWR Freight set for Christmas of 1975... although my set had the Fine fish wagon instead of the prime Pork (the same wagons just different branding on them) and instead of "Cadbury's" van mine was the blue "Kellogs" van. But everything else was the same! My dad got me the R915 power controller to use instead of using the battery one that came with the set. The next year I got Flying Scotsman for Christmas, (gloss finish) glowing firebox and the chuff chuff sound.
Hi Oscar, the catalogues evoke feelings of nostalgia and renewed enthusiasm. The cover of the 75 catalogue is a real winner. It made me tick off in my mind what i have, and what i am yet to acquire. A red Black 5 might be next on the list. Have a good Christmas and New Year. Steven.
Thanks, Dean. Glad you enjoyed the look for the catalogue. There's a Black Five coming up in a video shortly. Wish you all the best for the coming year. Oscar
Great video. Enjoyed watching. I have Albert Hall which appeared in that catalogue. Although I have some of the newer highly detailed models I still find myself wanting models like these. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.
Happy Christmas Oscar, we are off to the toy fair at Doncaster Race Course on the 30th of December to buy and see more memories like these. Thanks take care David.

Good evening Jimyjames sorry to hear about your car. I hope you're safe though, which is the main thing, cars can be repaired. Great to hear you have a flying Scotsman in your collection, I think the Cadbury wagons were available at 75-76. Wish you all the best for the festive season. Oscar
An overall great video this morning Oscar, some great items, the flying Scotsman obviously need no introduction,ma classic triang/hornby model which they must have sold millions of, it looked great charging round the layout with those Thompson style teak coaches, those well wagons with the loads on them were really nice looking, the tank one was interesting, great video though, have a very Merry Christmas Oscar.
Good morning David thanks again for looking in definitely one of Tri-ang Hornbys classics the Flying Scotsman. All the best, hope you're enjoying the festive season. Oscar
Hi Oscar, The Triang lifting bridge is just a slightly anglicised version made Faller for Triang. It is basically the Faller 120506 - H0 - Folding Bridge. Faller made quite a few buildings for Triang at the time. I have several of these models. I personally prefer the earlier BR version. Always thought it look more real. Thanks for another enjoyable video.
Seeing this makes me wonder just how many different versions of the Flying Scotsman have been manufactured by all makers over the years. Despite the age and play wear on your model, it does look good and it runs very well. I have always overlooked those coaches preferring the later more realistic looking offerings but yours do look good in a rake flying at the speed they were meant to go. Nothing silly about that speed, it was a thrill. I imagine the rain was coming at you sideways in the winds you described, not much can protect you in those condition. You managed some good purchases at the show though. Did you also have lunch there? Excellent lunches there. I am envious of the well wagon with the crane but I have the one with the tank. I didn't know that the turret is removable or that there should be a flint in there, otherwise my tank is complete. All the best to all for Christmas and the New Year Oscar. David.
Good morning David Hope you're enjoying the festive season, I didn't get to have lunch there. The rain was definitely coming in sideways, there should've been a Christmas market in the town on the same weekend, there should've been market stalls set up in the market Square and in some of the streets surrounding for retail and food as well as a handful of fairground rides and a stage for various a Christmas performances. The stage and some of the stores were put up in the days before, but they were all removed before the Saturday and the winds the correct decision in circumstances I think. A big Poly tunnel stye green house at the allotment next to mine was picked up by the wind and carried clear across our allotment to the one on the other side, taking out some fencing and shoulder height plants or snapped off down at ground level. Greenhouse now looks like a big flattened plastic carrier bag. Great two hear you have the wagon with the Tank load. Wishing you and your family all the best over the festive season. Oscar
I have the Flying Scotsman with realistic chuffing sounds but without the flickering firebox. I also have the Hornby 8751 (57XX) class pannier tank engine and the class 47 Mammoth with working headcodes.
Great video Oscar! @ 6:29 Hornby were selling packs of X67 brushes, I have several locomotives that use these type of brushes and many need replacing. Do you know where is best to buy packs of these brushes? In the past I have bought the ringfield type motor brushes with springs in a pack of 10, and these are sill available at £9.99 for 10. Can you buy the X67 brushes in packs of 10 too? I can only find a pack of 2 online for £4, which would work out very expensive as I need 10 pairs. Kind Regards Kevin
Good morning Kev thanks for looking in glad you enjoyed the video, sadly £4 seems to be about the going rate for a pair X67 brushes, I think Peter sSpares are £3.99 and trying Hornby spares are £4.10 both have slightly different posting options, so it may be worth sitting down with the calculator as this may be where the saving could be made. All the best. Oscar
My first locomotive when I was 5 back in 1969. I butchered it in the 1980's sadly😢 trying to repaint it into BR green. The chassis now lives under a Dublo A4 body as "Commonwealth of Australia in BR blue with the original tender repainted to match. One day I'll find another one. Preferably like yours (and mine originally) with the plastic painted bogie wheels and non plated drivers as I think these earlier versions really do look a lot better. The BR Green version as 60103 looked really good too with its non corridor tender, though it's curious they didn't fit it with the DB style smoke deflectors.
Hi Oscar, Nice intro shots especially taken from the tender end of the ‘Scotsman’. As others have said I have this model too as well as the double tender version. I think it was the ‘go to’ model for most people. Great trawl through the 1975 catalogue. Can I ask a couple of questions ? I have the R152 08 shunter in BR blue, unfortunately the connecting rods are missing. Also the brass black screws used for retaining the plastic body shell in the 70s, are they available as spares or do you know thread spec. Any thoughts on both for a spares source greatly appreciated. Have a happy Christmas and a healthy 2025. Gordon 🎄
Good morning Gordon, great to hear you enjoyed the video and have the double tender Version of the model in your collection. The body fixing screw for the diesel shutter is S.1026 available from Tri-ang Hornby Spares www.hornbytriangspareparts.co.uk/item/S1026-x23-3-X-BODYx2fCYLINDER-BLOCK-FIXING-SCREWS-T6E and the the connection rods are part number S.1014 they can be found on eBay at present. There is a pair of flute rods available if you search for this "TRIANG 0-6-0 CON RODS FLUTED X49 X50 WITH SMALL SCREWS S1014 PAIR SPARES" I've included a link to the service sheet for the shunter below which has the part numbers on it. Thanks again for looking in Hope this information helps you out. Wish you and your family all the best for the coming year. Oscar www.hornbyguide.com/service_sheet_details.asp?sheetid=137
I was told that most/all of the nice kit buildings in the back of the catalogue were sold off to another company.... I always wanted the R194 petrol station and the cottage. R.190
I cant recall a time when there wasnt a Flying Scotsman in the Hornby Range. I wonder how many tens of thousands of them have found their way to eager new owners for Christmas over the years and how many people started the hobby with a F/S set.
Hi, thanks for looking in. Must be a many thousand of these, and the miles they must've clocked up round circles of track, a very big number... This locomotive he is very evocative to both those who have an interest in railways and model railways and those who have not. Take care. Oscar
I'm one of the Lego guys based at the Blyth and Tyne MRS, but my next planned project (hopefully starting early next year) is a club Hornby Dublo layout. I was wondering if you could do a video on the powered points and signals systems, and I don't really know the scope of what was available and what the capabilites were. (I have been donated some electroinci points and signals, but have yet to have a chance to see if they work/see what they do.) Will.
Hi Will thanks for looking in, I love the Lego items that you have on display on these opening days. A Great view of the 1975 Catalogue & the F. S.- Happy Xmas & Thanks for showing 😉🚂🚂🚂
Morning Gerard, thanks for looking in and the info on the bridge, much appreciated.
Take care.
Oscar
Good morning Christopher thanks for looking in, those are great items you have in your collection.
Take care.
Oscar
What a great video..subscribed 👍
Good morning Martin thanks for looking in and taking the time to subscribe. It's much appreciated..

Kind Regards
Kevin
Good morning Kev thanks for looking in glad you enjoyed the video, sadly £4 seems to be about the going rate for a pair X67 brushes, I think Peter sSpares are £3.99 and trying Hornby spares are £4.10 both have slightly different posting options, so it may be worth sitting down with the calculator as this may be where the saving could be made.
All the best.
Oscar
Merry Christmas.
Got the same model myself my R855 came forn 1968 according to it's paperwork. Also R850 in BR Green and the later R845 Hornby Railways version.
Good morning thanks for looking in. Great to hear you have those items in your collection..
Oscar
Hi Oscar,
Nice intro shots especially taken from the tender end of the ‘Scotsman’.

(I have been donated some electroinci points and signals, but have yet to have a chance to see if they work/see what they do.)
Will.
Hi Will thanks for looking in, I love the Lego items that you have on display on these opening days. Great to hear you're gonna have a play with the Hornby Dublo, I,ve found it very rewarding, I think this video ua-cam.com/video/ykno8Pkc9N0/v-deo.htmlsi=4fSXB2c0yCygJIpa will give you an idea of how I've worked with these Dublo powered points, if you have any further questions, please get in touch.
Oscar
@oscarpaisley awesome, I'll give it a look!
