Here in Jamaica there is a movement to practice small cell (4.9mm) brood chambers to minimize the drone production hence minimize/control varroa mite proliferation in the hive. I try to go treatment free and practice this. As I am a new beekeeper, I will only learn along the way how beneficial this is for me.
That's awesome, thanks for joing us and watching from Jamaica👍 We in Northern California do treat, its necessary here because the amount of bees coming into California for pollination. We breed here in order to get more hygienic behavior and mite tolerance. What is your success rate on hive survival without treatment so far?
I tried to go treatment free also but like California Beekeeper other beekeepers don't seem to be as vigilant in taking care of the mite issues and it forced me to treat and the survival rate increased tremendously.
@@rodneymiddleton9624Its rough man! One of the many reasons we are very passionate about breeding mite tolerant queens/bees. #wildwest #almondpollination
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I have had terrible results from the Saskatraz queens I got last year. They have been the worst mite bombs ever. Have you had any experience with them?
You guys will be heading to the almonds in no time flat. February is right around the corner and we'll be seeing the Florida trucks coming through here loaded to the brim heading west on I-10. It's got to be nerve wracking for so many bees to be dropped in such concentrations at one time. So many different issues for you guys and vice versa for the guys coming in. But, it's part of the business. I do enjoy reading Randy Oliver's articles and research. Thanks for the video!!
Yes it all part of the industry when you're involved with California almond pollination. The Florida boys have already began arriving some parts of the state. Yes Randy Oliver has very useful data beneficial for us all keeping bees. Thanks Mike🤙 Appreciate you watching our channel💯.
I'm a newbie backyard beekeeper in Southern California, but the place I bought my bees/ queens from gets them from a breeder up North (maybe you😂). Supposedly the supplier is breeding for hygenics. These bees have been great so far with mites, with no treatments required yet, counts of only one or two mites on checks.

The ingredients in Melliferaboost® help to supplement the nutrients missing from artificial diets, helping to stimulate their immune and detoxification genes.Ease of application is another benefit of Melliferaboost®, saving time and additional expense. Each treatment is applied by sprinkling the dry powder directly inside the colony with immediate effects to the bees
Hit it with some brood frames pollen sub should grow up for almonds .. Not sure if you have brood this time of year ...michigan im normally broodless by mid nov not this year .. Record warm nov even my mating nucs had brood end of nov .. Been cold last few weeks warm front hitting tomorrow figure do my final oav treatment hopefully their broodless . probably last flight will get for weeks hopefully ..
Great idea! Normally add frames but this time around we will be leaving it as is and likely combine it with another weak hive if it doesn't meet the minimum frame count for our contract. We do brood up on our stronger hive when the winters are mild. This year it has been back and forth. We'll keep you updated and Thanks for watching my man!🤙
The maximum would be 3 miles but 2 miles is ideal in my opinion. The point is to saturate your flight area with drone stock for proper mating and minimal danger for queens to be eaten from birds as they are easier targets when returning from a mating flight
