2003 Yamaha WR450F Big Bore Walk Around

- I just bought a 2003 Yamaha WR450F with a 478 Big Bore Kit. The bike has a few quirks that will need to be addressed but I think this is a good project bike for the channel. The Yamaha WR450F is an extremely versatile platform that I want to use for everything from a road legal dirt bike to eventually a snow bike. Stay tuned!

Haha I have the same bike . Bought it as a non running bike for 1800.. Had been sitting for 12 years. Cleaned the carb, new spark plug, started and ran perfectly. Then went all through the bike , completing all the electrical to make it a dual sport. So now has a license plate. Fun bike to ride !!
Awesome
Good luck with the build. I have an 04 wr450 bought it with very low hours in 08 and knock on wood it still runs like a champ. I went super moto years ago and don't regret a second. Most fun on 1 wheel you can have! Go super moto you wont regret it.
Awesome!
Looking forward to seeing the process of bringing her back and what improvements you do. Good all on the magic button as those big four strokes can be a bit finicky to start. Cheers!
Thank you! I’m super pumped to get going on this. Starting work this weekend
Dang. There is a local 2004 wr450f for sale. Street legal process already done. Stock looking, no serious mods. $3200. 🤔 Sounds like a good deal after watching this video. 😅
USD or CAD? There were a couple of road legal units when I bought this for 5-6k
@@StockyBaldman usd
Ya so the 2300 I paid for this is around 1700 usd. 3200 for a road legal still sounds pretty good though. I think they fixed the starter issue in 2004 also, good luck with it
@@StockyBaldman hmm. Interesting. I have a week to decide. Haha. I will probably go ahead and get it. I am in desperate need of a bike. 😅😅
2400 is a steal . Paid 4200 for my 2008 with 1700km
Yeah it worked out pretty good
super old school Yamaha. Prob big bore kit need to rebalance the crank and tune a carburettor. You need to weigh the pistons 450 vs 475 if there is not a big difference its ok. If do nothing of this hard suff it will still run prob vibrations will be high up. I got a mechanic that install a piston from Yamaha 450 raptor to yz450 and I ride it. Vibrations was horrible((. Then he do a crank balancing and all become better
Good to know thanks!
How often does it Need an oilchange onroad use? And how is the Rest Abort the Intervall of the Engine? (Sorry for my Bad english)
The manual recommends to change the oil every thousand kilometres
@@StockyBaldman Ohhh okay thanks
I will buy it if you ever want to part with it and start something g new. I really want one bad give me a good offer
I appreciate the offer. I am absolutely in love with his bike and have it set up just the way I want it. I kind of love how it’s an old junker that I don’t have to worry about too much as well.
Nice. I have a 2003 WR 450 also! I've been through it tits to tail and everything around.
Awesome!
@@StockyBaldman how's yours doing? I just put an engine in mine to buy me some time while I rebuild my stock engine.
@@pdubowner I’m in the process of fixing some carb issues but she’s doing well for the most psrt
@@StockyBaldman if you plan on using the electric start you should do the 2004 starter gear and cap, if you haven't already.
What's going on with the carb?
When I got it, it had been parked for a while and it wouldn’t idle. I cleaned out the pilot circuit and put a carb rebuild kit in it but there’s a lot of popping from on decel. I’ve been playing around with the jetting, but just can’t seem to get it yet.
careful with those big bores kits, ive had a few where the cylinder jug cracks since the big bore makes the coolant pass throughs thinner
Interesting. Was it a stock jug bored out?
@@StockyBaldman nope it was a new cylinder, had it happen to me once on my wr450 when it needed a new top end and i decided to go with a big bore kit and that was a mistake. i don't know how common this problem is but i came across this video on a guy with a yzf and he had the same thing happen with his big bore kit.
link to that video, he starts talking about it at 48 minutes in.
