JR can play to sequences and electronics better than just about anyone. His feel is always so natural and in the pocket even when playing to tracks. He's just a tasteful monster on the drums.
Johnny Rabb is one of the only drummers that I view as a musician more than just a drummer, mainly because his approach it's very innovative without being overly technical, although the stuff he does its very complex to do especially with that much accuracy.
True, but to me, that is the beauty of it, you get to know what works and what doesn't in your own specific case on your specific kit. Through trial and error I found out that on my kit, even with factory made gear like DDrum or Roland, I could not get accurate triggering. Spending 270€ for four triggers from Roland would teach me exactly the same, except with far less money available afterwards. Also, my DIY setup allows for some flashy light triggers too, so that's a plus :D
It also depends on what you're looking for. Me, I'm looking for a response that's as close as prossible to that of an acoustic kit (damn neighbours :) So no more triggers for me (tried them all). I found that the only response close to that of the real thing comes from a Roland pad hooked up to its corresponding Roland module. There are no words to describe the feeling of "confidence" you have that the hit you're making will produce the same effect as if you were making it on an acoustic drumkit
Johnny Rabb: "I don't often get comparisons to Charlie Sheen, but when I do, I thank God I'm not a pill popping, alcohol-soaked lunatic like he is! LOL!
Yep. Looked cool, they did. Do you remember an electronic kit that came out in the late 80's called "Fightman"? I think they were made by Pearl. I used to go to a music store in Landover, MD and pester the people who worked there to let me get on those drums and fool around for hours! Ha ha! I would try to show off when customers came into the store... and usually ended up hitting myself in the eye with a drumstick! LOL. Also, used to bash around on Tama Techstars. I'm OLD! Ha ha.
The way I dealt with neighbours was to remake one of my basement storage rooms into a studio. It took a good month to get it done, but no-one is complaining any longer
Has anyone found a noticeable improvement in the sound quality or performance of the TD-30 as compared to the TD-20X. I'm finding it difficult to justify the upgrade without seeing or hearing much difference?? I have been playing with electronics since the days of Simmons and have triggered using Alesis and DDrum. Still have yet to find anything to "beat" my Rolands!
I'm running acoustic drums with piezo pickups, essentially an AE kit. The TD30 would cost me 2000€ while my current setup cost me under 1000€. However, my setup is very complex (always bad with electronic things) and not as easily portable, both of which are bad things for gigs. It essentially boils down to what you intend to to and how much you can afford. Roland gear is RIDICULOUSLY reliable and well designed, but expensive. Your DIY solutions are modular and cheap, but prone to errors.
again my question, would you say bfd2 vst program is less than the td 30? same with the superior drummer program?. my main question is. if you can install those programs on a cheap laptop that costs at max 600$ howcome that this module of roland costs way more than that>? and in relation to the pc its way less changeable and customizeable.
Well you've said it all. With Roland (more so than with any other brand) you buy your own peace of mind. For some people that is priceless. Some others will find solace in the lower price of error-prone diy solutions. There is no right or wrong here, and certainly no judging people who chose either direction. However I'll say this: in my experience, you end up trying many diy solutions and you're never fully satisfied, for a combined price that may not be very far from a Roland kit.
one think I dont understand, howcome that the modue is surpassed in the price pretty much the most expensive laptop or pc available? doesnt make any sense. I am sure in some way you can program a decent laptop or pc to do just those kind of things especially if we are talking about VST and midi samples. any answer?
Well, the TD-20 was their top drum kit when it came it, the TD-30 can be seen as its successor. So no, it's not a different league. If you own a TD-20, I don't think you need the 30
You might want to go to the V-drums forum website and learn how to make your own e-drums! There are a ton of people in the world who built their own electronic kits and use a drum module from Roland, Yamaha, Alesis, or a VST program on a computer. I'm going to buy a crappy acoustic drum set and convert it to an e-kit. When you buy an expensive kit from Roland or Yamaha, the expense is coming from the module and the brand name. Anyway, check out the V-drums forum.
It sounds very good, they improved a lot, but still have to work on cymbals as these sound most fake. They made the snare fantastic (although I am still not sure if there is still some reserve in the pad sensitivity and samples for much harder hits than Jonny does - I guess not, but it's still very good), toms acceptable, but cymbals are still td-12 era
14th Perception Roseknight We are talking about ~3000 Bucks (~3700 € vs. ~6700 € where i live). That is a lot! You can almost buy the K-Variant TWICE! I played both and the K is good BESIDES the Hi Hat (VH-11), which has some trigger issues! A good middle way is the TD-30KSE which is "only" ~4500
I like e-drums and they certainly expand, which is my goal, the drummer into a percussionist. Interesting since in school I used to play like the bells, or tympani, or wood blocks etc. Of course, though I couldn't really afford to buy those accessories given their somewhat limited use in say rock music or clubs. With e-drums U now have the ability to play those things and many, many others, too bad guitar players, to expand the music and bring in new sounds. However, I still don't think that some of the e-drums have the expressiveness of acoustic. I'm sorry, I know someone will disagree here and say, "yeah, but." Acoustic drums have soooo many nuances that are difficult to express in an electronic form. I think the future is kind of a hybrid type of set where you get the best of both worlds. Good drummer though.
Cutting Edge? No. Wrist-breaking? Oh, hell, yeah! I tried a set out in a music store in 1982 and I was NOT impressed. It was like striking a formica-covered tabletop. My, how things have changed! LOL.
Overrated? What the Roland drums? No, not overrated, necessarily. Extremely pricey. I would just buy the module and any old acoustic kit and convert the acoustics to e-drums. The module is going to be the most expensive thing on an e-kit. Hell, there's a video on youtube with a guy who made e-cymbals out of Frisbees! Frisbees! AND, they sound incredible.
Roland real drum sounds are not even close to bfd.superior drummer.addictive drums. Etc. And the electronic sounds for drum n bass hip hop dance music etc are just embarrassing... Who chooses these sounds? Man up roland and give drummers something back for the £5000... Give us drum sounds that are multilayered samples and give us sick urban and modern sounds... Then your kits will sell... Otherwise people are just gonna make their own hybrid kits...that look better sound better and are cheaper...

One of the best world drummers, for sure!
hes really not😆
Tony Royster jnr
johnny rabb your one of my favorite drummers out there.
You are by far my favourite Roland demonstrator. Great feel. Awesome imagination and truly inspiring. Thank you sir.
My favorite drummer.
Johnny Rabb is one of the only drummers that I view as a musician more than just a drummer, mainly because his approach it's very innovative without being overly technical, although the stuff he does its very complex to do especially with that much accuracy.
Love the single handed roll work. Top notch.
The Roland TD-30 still has some of my favorite drum sounds. I’d love to own just the head module so I could play it with the Korg PadKontrol.
Blew my mind....simply awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I freaking love you Johnny! You are the man! He is like, my hero on E-drums. Amazing video. I love electric drums!
Pretty good drumming. Amazing. Its a new experience on TD-30
+Sunil M lol yea, pretty good, fair to average right?
I got the TD3... :(
johnny rabb...winning!
just saw collective soul..now I know..very cool solid drummer..JR rocks *

My TD15 is awesome.

LOL!
underrated drummer
That looks like a fun fun set. I likey.

I got the TD 50 pretty awsome
The way I dealt with neighbours was to remake one of my basement storage rooms into a studio. It took a good month to get it done, but no-one is complaining any longer

Love it
showing what it can do.....switching sounds like a piano or guitar switches keys :) amazing
If you like him, you might want to check out Tony Verderosa, too. AMAZING drummer, doing it on the Yamaha e-kits, though. I love both him and Johnny.

I got the TD-9Kx
i.m wondering....you can stop the long tail sound of the toms with the hands,or digging the stick inside mesh head?
Yeah your option are limitless, you can add/remove/adjust any pats and cymbals you want :)
Anyone remember how cutting-edge the Simmons drums were back in the 80's? Neither do I...
Everyone remembers...
Im saving for a td-30 but by the time i have the money I'll get myself a TD-50
johnny had this on loop for 3 hours lol....btw i think i just got my old lady pregnant again because of this..!!
What is the sound pad he is using to the right?
What sound system was used here? I know for V-Drums it's super critical to have the correct ampification
+dippytoot It's hard to say since this was three years ago. It's whatever we had at the store at the time.

akira jimbo style! i like it
Dude could make a tea cup sound great. That is a nice e-kit though.
Close your eyes and it's indistinguishable from an immaculately tuned acoustic kit.

I am sure in some way you can program a decent laptop or pc to do just those kind of things especially if we are talking about VST and midi samples. any answer?
Is it possible to move around the td-30k? Like moving the pad down to have two floor toms instead of two tom toms and a floor?
Kevin Tran If you go to a channel called 65drums he has a td-30k and he has it set up to where he has two floor toms.
I can not get a sound like his snare on my td 20 Wish i knew what program that was.
the td 30 series got a completely different module, so that's more than likely why.
I think the normal K version, since the KV version has an extra pad :)
Well, the TD-20 was their top drum kit when it came it, the TD-30 can be seen as its successor. So no, it's not a different league. If you own a TD-20, I don't think you need the 30

PS:Wich is best of k and kv?
the flagship of the product is of course KV. but if you can afford KV, then go for it because KV is way more expensive than its K version

Yes I think you can. I can on my td25 with software update on roland webside

Cutting Edge? No. Wrist-breaking? Oh, hell, yeah! I tried a set out in a music store in 1982 and I was NOT impressed. It was like striking a formica-covered tabletop. My, how things have changed! LOL.

Yeah. Read my response to jahmoon27, above.
thanks for the answer. its way more reasonable.
I love that guy. Plus he sounds just like Charlie Sheen. Well, not a plus really.
I NEED THIS SETUP! Can..um...somebody spot me $10,000?
now compare this with T. Lang playing td30 with his machine gun awful sounds... td 30 can sound awesome on stage - Mr. Rabb proves it
no hes just like the guy off of arrested development
duh... winning

roland trying make their artists.....fail
