    Everything is a compromise. Vostok wanted to make a watch for the military: their specifications were to have a watch that was water proof, shock resistant, easy to maintain, and simple to construct. Accuracy was on the list, but it wasn't the primary goal of the development program. What Vostok came up with was the Amphibia.
    Accuracy: really good for a mechanical watch in it's price range. Mine runs about 5 seconds fast in a day
    Water resistance: Yes. I surf, I swim, I go camping. The Amphibia never got a drop of water in it. Never.
    Durability: Let me know if anybody has ever actually worn out a Vostok. 31 jewel movement. Think about it.
    Yes, the fit and finish isn't as good as an Omega Seamaster or Rolex Submariner. But a Seamaster costs, literally, a hundred times what you pay for an Amphibia. The Amphibia is a mechanical watch and as such will never be as accurate as a quartz movement. I have a Venus 200 Swiss that is valued at about $2k and it's not much more accurate than the Vostok. As far as durability, there a numerous videos showing Amphibia's being torture tested, but the same tests are never done on the Rolex or Omegas for accurate comparison. My thought is the Russian watch is much stronger than either of the others. Like an AK-47 has it's ugly flaws, but it always goes bang.
    I am not a Vostok fanboy, I'm just pointing out that it's important to keep your expectations realistic on a $60 watch. I own one, I wear it every day, and I will say that it's a well rugged and reliable watch. Good enough for me.

    • @darthkek1953
      @darthkek1953 4 роки тому +3

      If you have the kit there watch is adjustable and you can get set accuracy pretty well. From factory it can be variable.

    I'm not a huge Vostok apologist or fanboy, but they have earned a tremendous amount of respect with me. I have one thats 28 years old, and it still runs at +/- 10 seconds a day without any services. My great uncle gave it to my dad, and then I got it. It's an older Komanderskie automatic with hand wind. Tough as nails for sure. I just wish the lume was better!

      My Komanderskie had great lume for 30 years before it became degraded. I relumed it a couple of years ago with superluminova and it's _almost_ as good as it was from the factory. I suspect the original still had radioactive lume even though Vostok claims to have stopped using it by 1977.

    The best thing about the Amphibia vs. Seiko vs. Casio vs. Timex is that all those watches are cheap enough that it's possible to own all of them. It doesn't have to be an either/or situation. Wear the Amphibia if you feel like goofing around, wear the Seiko if you want to "dress it up" a bit, wear the Casio G-shock if you know you will be beating on the watch, wear the Timex if you don't care if the watch survives the day or not.
    It's good to have choices and the freedom to pick and choose.

    • @tjsogmc
      @tjsogmc 2 роки тому

      @@thomasboyle1677 I think there is a lot of nostalgia when it comes to Timex. They were never known as a so-called "high end" brand, but they were well respected for making bullet-proof watches that kept good time under harsh conditions. But like many iconic brands, they let themselves get overextended and forgot where their roots lay. Timex had just one job to do in the mind of the consumer: make a durable watch.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro Рік тому

      @@tjsogmc Like the gentleman above me said, there's a lot of nostalgia regarding Timex. I was born in 1956 and literally everyone had a Timex. If you had a little more money you got a Bulova or a Hamilton, but every American man, woman and child had at least one beater Timex. They were never a particularly good brand, even then, and were considered disposable. (Timex mechanical movements were sealed, unable to be serviced- if it stopped running, the factory repair method was to submerge it in gasoline, blow it out with compressed air, and oil it with 3-in1 oil. If that didn't work, you tossed the whole watch away, since it was more cost effective than fitting a new movement on and replacing the hands.)
      Timexes were engineered to last about five years. Many lasted beyond those five years, but good luck trying to disassemble and properly restore a vintage Timex with sealed movement. +/- five minutes a day (minutes, not seconds) was considered proper timekeeping range for a new Timex. I have my childhood Timex that I "service" every ten years by putting the movement in an ultrasonic cleaner and oiling with RemOil, just as they were "serviced" by Timex. It still continues to run, although it gains about three minutes a day.
      And I never understood where they got a reputation for being bulletproof; none of mine seemed particularly rugged. I laugh at the old advertisements where Rocky Marciano pummels a Timex glued to a punching bag and it still works. One accidental drop onto carpeted floor will render most vintage Timexes unusable. This was why Timex never secured any military contracts. Their inaccuracy, relative delicacy, and inability to be serviced outweighed any cost saving benefits the military ever envisioned.
      Ironically, at a time when most old prestigious American watch companies suffered due to cheap Asian watches flooding the market, Timex immediately capitalized on the Quartz Crisis and bought a Phillippines factory to make these new movements. Quality of Timex watches went higher than ever, because they were finally using modern production techniques. They began innovating technology like Indiglo backlighting and advanced waterproofing. They were no longer trying to compete against high end mechanical watchmakers; they were competing against Casio and Seiko.
      But because there's so much nostalgia attached to the name, and people still consider it an "All American" brand, they charge outrageous prices for their watches. One can do so much better with comparable watches by other makers. There's not a single Timex Expedition that is better than a Casio Forester or Pro Trek, and the Casios are half the price. Their Waterbury line is decent, but you're paying top dollar for it because it's nominally "made in the USA."
      I get that watchmakers survive off the brand caché that appears on the dial. If a Rolex didn't say "Rolex" on the dial, people wouldn't be dropping $30k on basic Datejusts and Submariners. But the Timex name connotes cheapness and value, so I will never understand why someone would be willing to drop more than $50 on one.

It has some flaws like rotor is just not smooth enough to rotate, glass gets scratched, bezel is bidirectional and doesn’t click, crown feels flimzy (but it has reasons why) and when I wound it it is quite tough. However, I still love this watch wven though it has some imperfections. I once binge-bought about 5 Vostok watches, back when I discovered that you could get stuff hitherto hidden behind the Iron Curtain online. The fact that I could afford 5 such watches, and all 5 are still running and keeping accurate time - tells me they're great values for the money. Ironically none of the Vostoks I have are Amphibias - personally I find them very lacking in style, but then I like the Kremlevskie line - basically the Invictas of the Soviet/Russian watches.
    Soviet/Russian engineering is so fascinating to me. Whereas Western Europeans, Japanese, and Americans come up with more technology and "fancier" ways of dealing with solving real-world obstacles - Russians often come up with more simplistic, but stunningly effective solutions. Their military weapons are a great example. Anyone familiar with the Mosin-Nagant or Kalashnikov rifles, or the Tokarev or Makarov pistols - knows they're not as elegant or refined as their Western counterparts, but yet they're amazingly durable and in service up to this day.
    Vostok watches are basically like that - they're the Kalashnikovs of the horological world.
    Plus - the Cyrillic writing on the dial and case backs are just plain cool.

    At it's core, it's a mechanical watch designed back when a mechanical watch was the only way to tell time. So mechanically reliable, reasonably accurate and mass-produceability were the design criteria rather than absolute accuracy and stability how much gold-inlay could be stuck into the movement.
    Soviet engineering was generally pretty good - with a tendancy to find something that worked 'good enough' and to keep producing that forever instead of trying to make it better - or at least to keep producing it until 'Good enough' is no longer Good Enough.
    I've a Komandirskie on order. Nothing fancy, but in truth, it's exactly what I want from a watch. Cheap. 24hr dial, and can be repaired with ebay parts when I manage to wreck it by being a plank. I've also ordered a 24 hour bezel for it, and an anti-mag back. Just because.

    my friend gave me a vostok amphibia with a radio room face as a gift because he hated seeing me wear my grand seiko to work. can agree, IT DOES NOT COME OFF. although I've never met another vostok owner :(

    The Vostok watch is made as a tool, not a piece of jewelry. The watch is durable and cheap. It is fit for military use where it was originally. Now watch enthusiasts have found Vostok watches because it has history and the watch is good considering the price.

    Got this exact watch delivered yesterday for $75 from Meranom. Put an orange Nato on it - makes the dial colour pop beautifully. Looks amazing in person, photos and videos do not do it justice. Just be aware of the short lugs. I put thicker spring bars in and struggled to thread the strap because of the narrow gap.

    Orient gave the Bambino an "open heart". Your thoughts? Will you look into one of these? My first Orient is on its way and I can't wait!
    Edit: I think this topic is video worthy given the Bambinos status as an entry level "go to" dress watch.

    My flaw having owned this watch is that the second hand isn't smooth - at the 10 to 30 second mark it doesn't just smoothly go forward, it stops and then gains by speeding up. I don't know why it does this. I saw a video where they explain that this is a feature, not a bug. But it might annoy some people. Also, I just saw some Swedish guy on UA-cam put this watch in a pressure chamber and the thing only stopped working at 800 meters, which is four times what it says on the back! I have my Amphibia on a rubber Seiko dive watchband and it looks great.

    I'll be the first to say that the Vostok Amphibia sure can use a quick date change feature.......yet I own more than 20 of the damn things......and will probably buy more. To me, the Vostok's biggest flaw is that there's so many awesome versions, and it makes me want to keep buying more than I don't really need. Then I spend even more on mods to give it that final touch.

    I just watched a video of yours where you said you considered a Vostok a toy and not a serious watch? I'm no fanboy, I bought one recently and aside from the looks It's pretty rough but I appreciate the history/heritage of how they came to be.

    Have a couple, one gripe I have with it is the chain. Its rattles, and if you don't want it to rattle, you need to tighten it up, which now it will pinch you if you move the wrong way. These things needs to be on a nato.

    Think of the scuba dude as the mosin nagant rifle of watches. Very basic design of varying quality, but cheap and functional enough to develop a fan base.

    The thing about the Amphibias is that they are generally FAR better than the official specs. They are usually much more accurate, and the cases consistantly withstand pressure tests in excess of 600m! I wish the crystal was more scratch resistant, but I understand the reasoning behind using this acrylic material. At the very least, they should sell a polishing kit.

    Entered the contest but couldn't wait for my fix, so I also got a Vostok 420 case Kommandirskie on Ebay for THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS plus about three fiddy for shipping. Since the 'Dirskie has a tank on it and is only water resistant, I am planning to swap the dive bezel for a compass. Then I need the cushion-style 710 "Ministry" case Amphibia and finally a vintage dress model with the 090 Tonneau case and a plain bezel. For aviation watches and chronographs (which I don't have as much use for), Vostok Europe has a few great models in a higher price range.

    I just bought a SARB065 Cocktail Time today... yet again, like the Alpinist, because of you. Managed to find a brand new one in stock for a very reasonable price. I also have two Amphibias in my collection: a 420526 Zissou (of course) on a Seiko style rubber diver strap and a 090916m (m for matt finish). The 090 has been given a Seiko style bezel and insert along with a 4mm thick mesh bracelet - this watch gets the most positive comments from non watch people. There is a plan for a third one - to make an early Fifty Fathoms-ish looking one out of a 420660, a suitable bezel and insert (available), vintage Tropic style rubber strap and a more slender retro hand set. More a case of wanting to learn how to extensively modify a watch more than anything else.

      My taste in watches has grown. Until recently, I was mostly a black\dark dial and white\metal contrasting details sort of watch fan. But T3 has really sold the Alpinist and Cocktail Time to me... made me open my eyes and see the colour. The hardlex crystal almost put me off enough and I was nearly getting a SARB033 instead (more in line with my usual tastes)... But having owned other Seikos with hardlex, I decided it wasn't a good enough reason to play it safe and bland with the 033 and got the 065 in the end. Like the Alpinist, the Cocktail Time really looks a lot nicer in person. Only downside is the JDM straps don't seem to fit my 8" wrists... but how often do Seiko fans keep the original strap on the watch?!

    It's the price point. It's a good feeling to most people that they can have a watch collection that they can actually afford. Like you said, they are a great value. I think people understand it will have short comings. The heritage, charm, functionality and modifications friendly aspect makes it a very attractive package. Im looking to start a collection of these as well. Asking for a scuba dude for Father's day from my boys. We go boating and the season is starting. Perfect time for nautical type watch with character for CHEAP!!

    I have owned two and neither worked. They both would randomly stop for no reason. If I shook them they would start working, but regular wrist movements weren't enough to power the movement. Winding wasn't 3nough either. I even took them to a watchmaker who said they needed new mainsprings. The watches developed these issues after six months and three months respectively. They look cool, but based on my experience not reliable.
