Absolutely one of the best RPG series ever. That said, this is more of a story driven game with shooter elements... Not really what I'd call a shooter. You'll love the entire series!
It's more like a 3rd person "shoot and hide into cover" kind of game, than high octane shoot everything in plain sight fast paced action tbf!…You have to be at least a little strategic in ME games, not just rush ahead, you have to use actual tactics, cover when necessary, shoot when necessary, use skills when necessary etc...I definitely wouldn't categorize ME as a "shooter" experience even though shooting stuff may be a large part of it..,

That depends on your preference completely, from plot, drama and how well characters written - yes! It is unmatched, but if you are looking for something else in a video game, there are better examples than ME franchise...for example Witcher franchise (especially 3!), Fallout franchise (Especially New Vegas!), GTA franchise (Especially 5!) and so on...
In my opinion most of the greatest games ever released remain in the late 90's at earliest and early 00's at latest! That in my opinion was the pinnacle of video gaming period, those 6-7 years from 1996 till 2002/2003 are the most productive years ever, so many classics released in that span, that it's not even funny!
@@Summon256 It's all subjective obviously, but when I think about the game that I've enjoyed the most, it's the Mass Effect trilogy. The Witcher 3 is another great game, but I don't love it as much. I couldn't get into the Fallout series. Other than the fact the games look archaic, I have found that I don't enjoy Bethesda games in general (and yes, I know NV is Obsidian).
Pro tip, after every mission its always good to check in with your crewmates get to know them on a personal level. Also as everyone has been saying the good cop dialogue is the top right the bad cop dialogue is the bottom right the middle doesn't benefit you at all, that being said all your actions will have consequences in this trilogy so choose wisely. 😁

You probably figured this out by now, but the game rewards exploration and observation. You won't find everything your first time through, of course, but keeping an eye out will get you a lot of cool stuff, AND fill out the world building. For example: 18:36 - Walking to this point triggered the argument between Pressly and Adams that you can overhear. Listening to it would've given you a primer for "I heard you arguing." which, when selected, would've gotten you insight into Pressly's (and other humans) feelings about aliens, and about who Nihlus and Captain Anderson are. 19:44 - This conversation was between Jenkins and Chakwas (standing near the door you entered to talk to Nihlus), and talking to them would've introduced those characters and gotten you more info on Spectres. 32:25 - Whenever a crew member says "Huh" or some other little sound, it means they've seen something interesting, and talking to them will have them tell you about it. (Everyone has a "huh" moment by the big relay statue on the Citadel. Just sayin'. 😉) 34:30 - Unlocking this door leads to some NPCs who tell you about the beacon and foreshadow Saren. 35:34 - Kaidan and Ashley's dialogue here is meant to make you look up and see the giant squid-like ship looming overhead. 36:30 - If you had turned to the right here, you would've seen another door to unlock, leading to more NPCs who would tell you about the attack, and (if you had gotten your Charm/Intimidate up) get you a special item. You then could've repeated this process with the dude behind the crates. Like I said, you won't find everything on a first run-through, but I thought I'd just point this out for you to keep in mind. Observe everything you can, listen to conversations you overhear, and talk to everyone around you. Also, if you haven't already looked at it, the Codex gives you all the info there is to know on the world and the characters, and gets filled out as you go. "Primary" codex entries are read for you, while "Secondary" ones you read yourself.
I love finding new people that are getting into Mass Effect. I originally played ME1 in 2007 when it came out on Xbox360 and fell completely in love with the story. I am looking forward to accompanying you through your journey in the trilogy!

I was so torn on whether or not to look up lore before playing, but obviously didn’t as you can see me call the characters and other races weird/wrong names 🤣. Is there a good place to look that isn’t full of spoilers?
@@_shhenanigans_ The in-game codex it will break down every race for you and tell you even about Shepards history her birthday etc. how weapons work how humans evolved in space travel and the rest of the lore will be given throughout the game if you don't mine paying attention to the little details and talking to everyone and listening to ambient conversations. And if your interested they have books I would wait to read them till you finish the second game to avoid the most spoilers but they add a lot of context background and flavor not to mention just a chance to spend more time in the universe.
I firmly endorse these comments. Mass Effect attracts very aggressive commenters who will back-seat like crazy because they want to "help" you make the "best" choices. They might be well intentioned, but they forget that there is even greater joy in discovering and figuring out the games on one's own. So if you have someone who can help you screen for spoilers, this will enhance your enjoyment of the story, I think. And it's a hell of a story. The people describing this trilogy as one of the best ever are not exaggerating. It's certainly my favorite.

Mass Effect is a great game. Just a heads-up. Blue conversation options are Paragon, Red is Renegade depending on what one you chose, it will increase your level in Paragon or Renegade, opening up more conversation options. They are on your upper left side of your conversation wheel for Paragon, lower left are red for Renegade. The conversation choices matter, every choice will affect things in your current game and in the next 2 games. Take your time look around, thats how you get money, guns, ect from boxes, or lock boxes or planet scanning. Most of the time you can take the time to look, so don't be in a hurry or rush to an objective. Enjoy yourself its going to be a hell of a ride.
Don’t stress me out and just let me live in delusion that all of my choices will be fine 😭🤣. But for real, thank you! I had no idea what paragon or renegade was all about, but we’re out here winging it! Just trying to make choices that make sense to me and this Shep.
Suggestion: there's a code at the bottom of the appearance screen. That's your Shepard's appearance. I'd suggest writing that down or taking a screenshot of it.

Good Luck, Sin Shepard! The 1st time playing this game can be special, because of the interest (and surprises) the game presents. It's unique. The trilogy is not a clever puzzle to solve and you don't have to be a great shooter. But the question is: "Who is this Shepard?" Are you playing as yourself? Are you playing the way a Commander "should be?" Or are you a mischievous/tough guy? Tell us your suspicions and your reasons and it will be interesting to watch!
Part 1 is a little janky and there's a lot to take in. There's a lot of world building going on. There's a lot to see and do. A lot of people get bogged down at the Citadel because it's kind of overwhelming, get bored and stop. The only advice I would give you is: talk to everyone, explore everything, talk to your crew after every mission, go back to the Citadel after every story mission and Virmire is the point of no return. Hope you love this series.
I guess the Citadel is a bit like the Hinterlands in Dragon Age: Inquisition, and that Bioware hasn't quite shaken the habit. New players often get bogged down there, trying to complete the entire map, and get bored, not realising there's a whole other game if they can just do what they need to do there and progress the main plot.

As you're new to ME a few no-spoilers advice that'll make life easier (in the unlikely case you haven't been told yet): Most of your decisions actually matter and they do so throughout the whole game series. So answer with care. Apart from that: Ask all you want to ask from the left side of that communication wheel first: The right side typically ends the current section of a communication. Try to talk to each team member after every mission: They might have interesting info to add or just interesting things to say and you also want to have a good relationship with everyone. Enjoy! "I should just not touch these" - *touches it more intensely* :D *1min in casually throws a grenade at team mate in the cockpit* ... rough start, eh? ;)
in fairness to her in the original the grenade was bound to R on pc, so every time i'd instinctualy try to reload i'd toss one at someone. i also used to constantly get stuck in noveria's elevators cause of a bug.
Oh nice. The music when the game started really brought some memories of this game again. I've played through all the 3 some few times can't even remember. Steam shows 160 hours on ME1 and 174hours on ME2 and ME3 seems to have 104 hours. It's a great story even though gameplay wise there are some not that great things and features ..
ME1 is a clunky shooter, but an absolutely amazing story. Try and forgive its shortcomings in terms of combat and just enjoy the backstory and lore. The majority of this game is essentially an introduction to the Mass Effect universe. Pretty widely considered to be the best gaming trilogy of all-time. At the very least Top 3. It’s a smaller community than some other more popular titles, but the people that love this series LOVE it. Looking forward to seeing your play through. Have an amazing time, Commander.
In dialogue, the left options are exploratory, the right options just continue the dialogue without any exposition, which I consider really bad in an RPG like this that has TONS of lore. Also, bottom right are renegade options (i.e. "evil" althought I hate using that word, renegade is the way to go), top left are paragon ("nice") options. I'd suggest you pick the left exploratory options whenever possible, they dont progress the conversation, they just give you more info and lore so you can make a better informed decision.
I noticed Mass Effect 1 is too old and clunky for some newcomers and they eventually lose interest. Mass Effect 2 is my favorite, and the games get better in terms of gameplay in such in and after ME2.
I can’t totally see that - I got to the Mako and almost put it down bc that thing is goofy. But, I took some time to look into some mods and it made it so much more enjoyable! I’d hate to miss out on good gaming just bc things are a little outdated
@@Andyground11 Almost the same for me. I completed Mass Effect 1 once back on the 360. Never had any desire to replay it. Mass Effect 2 however i've replayed like 10 times.
Of course, opinions vary. ME1 is my favorite of the trilogy, for reasons that would be spoilery. I've replayed it at least 20 times. This is not to say the other games aren't great. Just that, for me and what I want in an RPG, the first one has the edge, despite the gameplay clunkiness.

It’s a smaller community than some other more popular titles, but the people that love this series LOVE it.

In dialogue, the left options are exploratory, the right options just continue the dialogue without any exposition, which I consider really bad in an RPG like this that has TONS of lore.
Also, bottom right are renegade options (i.e. "evil" althought I hate using that word, renegade is the way to go), top left are paragon ("nice") options.
I'd suggest you pick the left exploratory options whenever possible, they dont progress the conversation, they just give you more info and lore so you can make a better informed decision.
Except for the, like, two or three times in the entire series they go against the pattern and screw you with a continuation on the left side. :P :)

I would say, talk to people, they give a lot more lore and background to the universe around you
It's an amazing trilogy but 1 has problems they fix in the sequel.
No mako, better planet scanning, lots of QoL stuff.
I’m growing to love the mako! It’s very much an enemy to lovers kind of story lol. Maybe I’ll even miss it when I get to ME2
I noticed Mass Effect 1 is too old and clunky for some newcomers and they eventually lose interest. Mass Effect 2 is my favorite, and the games get better in terms of gameplay in such in and after ME2.
I can’t totally see that - I got to the Mako and almost put it down bc that thing is goofy. But, I took some time to look into some mods and it made it so much more enjoyable! I’d hate to miss out on good gaming just bc things are a little outdated

@@Andyground11 Almost the same for me. I completed Mass Effect 1 once back on the 360. Never had any desire to replay it. Mass Effect 2 however i've replayed like 10 times.
Of course, opinions vary. ME1 is my favorite of the trilogy, for reasons that would be spoilery. I've replayed it at least 20 times.
This is not to say the other games aren't great. Just that, for me and what I want in an RPG, the first one has the edge, despite the gameplay clunkiness.
