  • Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly: Life Behind the Scenes is a 20 minute video produced by the Burwell School Historic Site about the life of Elizabeth Keckly.
In 1868, Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly published an autobiography entitled, Behind the Scenes: Or thirty years a slave, and four years in the White House. Her book provided insight into the life of an African American woman born into slavery before the Civil War, a woman who endured horrific treatment yet rose above it all to purchase her freedom, establish a successful business, and become the confidant to the First Lady of the United States. This is her story, in her words, of life behind the scenes during a tumultuous time in American history.
The Burwell School Historic Site is honored to interpret the life of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly as part of our mission to maintain and preserve the 19th century history of Hillsborough and Orange County, North Carolina.

She was so incredible, and virtuous in that, she stuck to HER virtues no matter how any one tried to push her. And I cant even comprehend having a spirit so strong. She actually brought that “pastor” to his knees when he was abusing her because her spirit was so strong and unyielding. I think schools should make her book a requirement to read.

How has this woman not had a movie made about her? Or has there, and I just don't know about it. She's worth knowing about.

Her life reminds me of my mom (RIP). Her skills, commitments and beliefs were similar. Bless her.

Wow this was absolutely astounding having to pay $30,000 just to have the right to be free we don’t value our freedom enough and the Lincolns were fighting for the freedom of the blacks things we take for granted now I’m fighting for the freedom to be myself most people don’t realize it’s a fight most people sell out are convinced others know better let other people define reality and like a black woman I fight for my own identity and my own freedom and it sounds dramatic but it’s actually a personal struggle in the future I hope people will be able to express their individuality their preferences their character their sense of self without being judged at egotistical or grandiose or seeking attention it’s just art for art sake others might perceive it as outlandish but it’s inspired by God ultimately everyone has struggles I’m glad freedom is happening in the world children aren’t being tortured and murdered for the most horrible reasons life continues to get better in gods world he always is the Victor thank you for this video it is most revealing and I really admire this woman so much what strength of character she had wow… I liked hearing how kind Mary Todd was to her and her suffering sometimes people focus on moments of weakness just for drama sake ignoring the good things that they actually did do and the good people they actually were…. Thank you for creating this video… 🌈👍🤍

This is an interesting account, but sounds like some one reading a story
without feeling of what they were sharing.
