yo man, i appreciate you doing these tutorials on tagging. Basically every tutorial you see online for graffiti focuses on pieces or throwies. As a newer writer who has almost no interest in throws/pieces at the moment I'm focusing entirely on marker tags, there's really barely anything out there for me. Best I can do is take pics of tags around my city and think about what makes me like them. Flip the script is a solid book, but it's mostly just showing you alphabets of famous taggers. It's nice to see some stuff like this. Def copping your book asap, thanks homie
I learned these first as a kid when they actually taught handwriting. This video also explains the fundamentals of lettering and typography as a whole. I remember getting into an argument with a computer graphics teacher about tagging being another art form and style of font. Because of the basics laid out here. But I digress, a big thank you for the video, Grim.

I was known for crazy flares. I used to jack caps from Testor model paint spray cans and slice the middle of the nozzle with a razor blade. Bored and it worked. This was back in 1986-1992.
So im a little older than most writers, but im definitely no noob. Started actually getting up about 3 months ago. Last night i ran into 2 other writers for the for the first time ever. And as they saw my piece they immediately said, ".....ur *** ?? Damn bro, you've been gettin up hella. That's crazy, everyone's been wondering who u are!!...." And then they were gone. It was crazy. Still on guard but also humble. Dapped em up and that was that. The best part was realizing 2 of the hottest writers in my city did pieces right next to mine. Now sidecapping is a whole other issue, but i feel its an approval almost especially if ur getting sidecapped by vets. But i dont know. Still new to the game and trying to figure out how to move the right way.
Lol I'm glad to hear it! Also, no it can't be for one huge reason. the letter O reacts tremendously to style, even tiny amounts. So when you make it a square, while it may still function just fine, it no longer universally flows, and also has too much style to be a variant structure. This is a similar issue to some other false variants we see in S and E where the structures may work, they might not be wild style or to that level of complexity, but they're still a bit too much for print font. Thats really the big reason, o is too sensative to stylistic changes.
Just write & practice your name. Practice piecing and tagging your name on paper until you finally feel comfortable with it. This doesn’t have to turn into a calculus or geometry class; even though there is some math involved in piecing in some space…..
I must ask man, as a beginner I do realise I gotta practice and I try, but how exactly do I practice? Do I just draw a bunch of individual letters, lines, boxes, handstyles in ny blackbook or? Sorry if it's a stupid question
YES! practice!!! practice everything, before you put that B/S up outside make sure you got it down in the books and stay consistent! if you don’t , they streets gone definitely let you know lol good or bad bro, word it’s a lot of toys up don’t be one of them!!
Will I be receiving a physical copy of this book ? I don’t own a laptop so reading this off my phone isn’t my preferred choice. Keep up the great videos ! - Bren
one thing that sucks is when you have a cool name with a cool meaning but when you try to write it and make it look good it simply doesnt have much style, my tag, which was XEN is an example of that. (changed it to sap)
@P-zero0 that's not how style works my friend. Donthe mean this to sound harsh but you don't have style, no amateur in any art form does. You're not going to successfully add style to any name either because style is the exaggeration of the fundamentals while keep them correct, the same fundamentals you still don't know and therefore can't exaggerate. Keep the name XEN and practice the basics. The more you practice the basics the more capable of style you'll be.
@@Theartistblock I keep praciting, and i have developed some style, I'm still a toy eitherways, I'm only struggling with the letter X since its hard to put style on it without making it look like a different letter or something else that will make it unreadable, when I do tags I always put some level of readability which is my choice, again I practice whenever I could, I watched a lot of vids especially yours and its really helping me. thanks for the advice tho, love your videos.

@Exotic-powder0 so serious question here, and be honest with yourself when answering. You've been writing two years, but how much of that time have you been adding style to your work? Likely whe whole two years (almost all graffiti artists do this). How much of that time did you spend studying and practicing the basics with ZERO style added? Most graffiti artists can go 10 years and NEVER ONCE actually keep things simple and practice the basics meaning they've spent 10 years doing graffiti and 0 years getting better. Normally it takes 3-5 years of studying and practicing the fundamentals to be at a point where you can begin making a style of your own, then a bit more time to make something complex that is not only original to you but also fundamentally sound. Most graffiti artists never do that, instead they copy and bite, but if you don't practice the fundamentals then copying becomes your only option.
You're more than welcome to prove me wrong. Go on, explain to us how graffiti doesn't use the elements of art, explain how there are no artform specific fundamentals, and demonstrate some of your graffiti that you've done WITHOUT using line, shape, form, value, space, color, texture, or letter structure. We'll wait. This is what you have to do to be correct
Funny, never been to art school. I think it's more of an intelligence and not ignorance perspective. Graffiti has an excessively low bar of entry for skill and knowledge. It's easy to teach and easier to learn.
I feel like some people cant comprehend that graffiti has fundamentals because the whole purpose of graffiti is to break the rules. People always say art is subjective, but really only beauty is subjective, art is based on fundamentals as well. Great video grim, definantly gonna check out all those letter structure variants
You said this perfectly! Love the point about art and it being subjective
“You have to learn the rules to break them”
I had an art teacher that always used to preach fundamentals. Our argument but “we’re artists, let us be us”. She did not care. Lmao
I couldn’t when I started I can now.
