Pontiac Grand Am turn signal fix / repair

  • Replacement of faulty flasher switch corrected my turn signal problems. Turn signal would work correctly at times, and incorrectly at other times. This drove me crazy and was extremely hazardous when driving, no one could help me correct the problem. I recommend purchasing a new flasher at a reputable auto parts store. In the demonstration I used one from a salvage yard.

The best part of not having turn signals, is the look others give me while using hand signals.

I've tried using hand signals but by the actions I get or don't I don't think the people around My area have a clue what they are. So I pretty much stopped.

Hey everybody, I thought it might be helpful to elaborate on this job some more. I just recently fixed mine with the assistance of this video and for those of you wondering you DO NOT need to replace the whole 2 switch unit (the ets and the hazard switch, ONLY the hazard switch which is about a $17-$30 part depending on where you purchase it from) you WILL however need to unscrew the 3 7mm bolts from that unit as he shows but like I said you only need to replace the hazard switch NOT the ets also. There I just saved you $80-$100 and a headache from your local gm dealers..

89' Grand Am. Blinker relay, located behind speedometer in the dashboard. Remove drivers seat. Remove bottom panel of driver side dashboard. Remove computer port. Remove relay bracket underneath the computer port. Push relays, and wire harness out of the way. Move fuse panel out of the way. Remove the round shiny blinker relay. Replace it. Reassembled in reverse order. About 3 hours.

Thank you so much for this video! I think you saved my sanity. I've been having problems with my 2001 Grand Am. Sometimes the turn signal will work, sometimes it won't. I usually have the most trouble with it during weather change. It doesn't work at all in the warm months without turning on my AC and blasting it into the turn signal switch. I really hope this works!

Thanks for posting this.I know I preformed this repair before but it was good to see how it is done before I head to the wrecking yard tomorrow.
A little tip to others, the yard I deal with allows me to take all the headlight bulbs/fuses/relays etc as long as I put them in a clear plastic bag.Usually they only charge me $5 and there's almost always more than $200.00 worth in there.

I got some kind of letter in the mail about the flashers, but they wanted over $100 to diagnose the problem, then if it was the problem they needed it to be, they'd fix it for free. If not it could be another $400+ they said (I think $400 is the magic estimate for every type of repair. They told me that's what it would cost to fix my driver's side mirror too.)

My car is doing this as well and it was manufactured 1 day after the recall cutoff date. I'm guessing they still used the faulty parts. Thanks to you looks like I can fix this one on my own pretty easily! Thanks! Make sure you check and see if your on the new ignition recall ( Oct 2014) that's been linked to 13 deaths.

I wish I knew more about cars when I bought this lmao. my first car, a grand am GT 2000, speakers sounded shitty, horn don't work, cruise control don't work, headlights are absolute trash, quite a few dash lights are on but just because of bad sensors, security bell always dings 3 times about a minute after driving even though everything is ok, missing all the emblems that say grand am gt and ram air v6, all I knew was the car looked bad ass IMO. paid 1200 too. well that included new tires

Any suggestions? I did have corrosion in the housing that I sprayed out, but the bulb will work with the lights on just not blink to turn or hazard blink.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero has the same issue. Power circuit for the blinkers is routed through the hazard switch. When hazard switch goes bad- no blinkers Or intermittent. Very Poor design, just because they share the same flasher relay doesn't mean one should control the power over the other...................

That is not the fix to the problem...the hazard switch is just a cause of the real problem which lies under the steering wheel it seems to be a much more complex problem that unfortunately GM fucked us all over with their shitty line of Grand Ams that they found it simpler to just DO away with it all when the replaced the whole god damned car with the G6 lol

@WprEmiere1985 Doesn't surprise me. The age of the car probably has a factor to GM.

+Kiera Thompson sorry it took so long for a response. I do think that it is the hazard switch. I would replace it.

if my blinker or hazard click when not turning. just randomly, is that my relay?

+Matt Gumphrey I would say that it is the hazard Matt. You can pick one up at AutoZone, NAPA, Advance Auto, minimal cost.

Can I just replace the hazard or I have to replace both hazard and ets?

wait a min, you didnt replace the switch the replaced the whole switch's housing. I'm having a hard time removing just the switch itself.

I'm going to say yes. I recommend purchasing a new switch instead of getting a used on. Al

Thanks for the quick response. How do you remove the switch from the housing? I'm pushing the side clips down but they don't budge much.
