This is an overview of the Sony Handycam model CCD-TR517. I purchased this thing new back in early 2000. This is actually the first time I got it out since 2005!
I have this same camera. I bought it at a Walmart back some time in 2001 while I was in Buffalo, NY providing training. Very good camera. I actually paid like $330.00 after tax (It was on clearance). I used it even from the plane (When you could travel freely and some airports even had a smoking room). The zoom was interesting, I record from the Airplane a dot of smoke and when zoom you could see the towers of a nuclear plant somewhere in Alabama. I'm keeping it for a Super 8 player basically.
My dad had a higher end model that recorded onto Digital8 tapes that he bought weeks before Christmas of 1999 for like $1300. Unfortunately, I do not have it anymore, but I think it was the DCR-TRV310, and I'm sure it's been in my dad's attic rotting along side the tapes since... 2004 maybe?
I had a similar camcorder like that one! Bought it on Feb 1999. I loved it too! It was a nice upgrade (replacement) for my RCA CC-436 VHS camcorder! Sadly, 6 months later, me like an idiot accidentally dropped it with the cassette door open and broke it! I take to circuit city to see if I can fix it under warrantee. But of course they figured I accidentally broke it. They gave the estimate of $280 to fix it. I decided it was not worth it. Although I paid $599 for my model. I felt it was not worth it then. So I went back to my old VHS for the next 2 years. I then bought a new 8mm for $300!
If you look on Amazon or Ebay they have these things call USB Grabber. They allow you to copy old video camera tape to a computer. There is better ways but they cost more.. I did do a video on this with my old Digital 8 camera: ua-cam.com/video/svc5nzG1-l8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ChrisChild
I'm getting that camera as a replacement of my crappy Sony Handycam CCD-TRV138 camcorder. Looks a little like my TRV87 which had malfunctioned in 2012. Thanks 969thewhip! You had me an inspiration

When I first got it, maybe 2 hours. Now it won't last more then 5min.

what kind or batteries do these use?
I have the exact camera, but, the tape clicks then pops back open. I can't even see what is on
the tape. That sound like the tape is stuck.
