The analogue video look is so closely associated with an era, the 1980s and 90s, that it's difficult to shoot anything today without evoking that time. It's such a visual timestamp, aesthetically speaking, it would be interesting to hear anyone shooting analogue for non-nostalgia reasons.

I have an analogue Sony DVD handycam made 19 years ago, anything recorded on it looks itself to be as old as the camera. Going to experiment by taking stills and videos of object/places that weren't around back then e.g. The Shard (London) etc
I love that analog look -- it adds a certain atmosphere and cinematic flare, while the digital camcorder just looks like plain old reality, which, ya know, I see everyday through the lenses of my eyes.
It has nothing to do analog and everything to do with the sensor. That’s the CCD look. MiniDV is digital encoding and still gets the same look when you shoot with a CCD camera, even more so when using a 3 CCD camera like the VX1000 or 2100.
I think analog mediums are distorted enough that it almost captures the distressed nature of our memories and it feels more accurate to how we remember stuff
I love analog, it just makes things look cozy whilst the comparison in digital was kinda depressing haha I need the noise and the pixels and the sound distortion 😂

Just found my grandpas 1997 JVC GR-AX720U VideoMovie Camera. Definitely going to shoot some 90s videos. I have 90s Vehicles; (92 Ford F250, and a 95 Ford Ranger, and a 01 Mercury Grand Marquis). I personally love living a simplified and fun life. I am fixing up his all original One Owner 1971 1080sqft brick home and loving finding the hidden treasures and the odds and ends! I am keeping to a 90s theme. Minus the bright neons lol!! A earthy green and brown and white look!
Thank you for bringing back the nostalgia for this analog device. I remember when I first started out in video with this Hi-8 format. The jump to the the subsequent digital generation of Mini DV was quite noticeable in terms of image quality and sound. Then when HDV and other HD formats came along, looking back to the old footage was almost unbearable. Today's 4K or 8K still didn't quite have the impact of the transition from the Mini DV to the golden HD generation.
Oh man, this took me back to high school, I used Hi8 cameras all the time, and the school had a dedicated player connected to an editing machine. Eventually, I got to use the newer Digital 8 camcorders, which used a firewire cable to connect to the computer for import. All the editing we did was in Adobe Premiere. There is a certain look to that old camcorder footage, and while it brings me back, I find working with my D750 for video today is far better. As for editing digital to look like analogue, not my thing, but your footage certainly makes me enjoy the look! PS: I came over to your channel after Lucy Lumen recommended it!
i gotta say i'm an analog girl! BUT i appreciate digital for its convenience. im conflicted about editing digital footage to look analog but because shooting on film/analog can be expensive i can understand.
The playlist you made: Lofi Beats to put u in a good mood has literally gotten me thru my BSN, I graduate August 26th, and while i associate that playlist with pain and suffering, it pavlovs me into focusing
Another thing i found out is that if you get to find some old point and shoot camera, it can also do similar results to the analog camera when the resolution is set to vga (480x600). Still not the best or the same but to some extent it does the trick.
Ahhhhh been waiting for this one! Thank you for uploading 💗 you literally were the reason I bought my sony handicam aha. I shoot film pics and personally I don't like editing film apart from a few color corrections but with digital videos I don't mind editing it to look like analogue videography but I guess it just depends on what equipment you have accessible to you 💗
I love both images. I guess I have a soft spot for the hi 8 footage since I used it so much when I was younger. Thanks for the video!! Cameras and camcorders plus your sweet voice in California has caught my interest! Thanks again!!!!
I'm 19, what I love about my old memories are how they are videos captured on analogue with the typical dad cam aesthetic. Nowadays it's too easy to just whip out the iPhone and take a quick pic. The quality seems clearer than my eyes and it just doesn't feel the same.
I already love it from the very start! Great content. I also remember (I was born in 84) around 1995 my uncle came home from Hawaii and he had an analog JVC camcorder and he taught me how to use it and I became the go to kid at that time to operate that camcorder. Peace
mmm the correct comparison would perhaps be hi8 camera versus digital8 camera, since being HD the one you put here changes even the resolution, and digital is not the same as HD.
WOW! I still use my Sony analogue camcorder and thought it was doing OK until I saw the quality of what is possible using one of the cheaper Sony digital camcorders. I also transfer my films to the computer via an analogue to digital converter. After seeing the quality of Sony's supposed low end digital effort, & how easy it is to transfer files, I am hooked. Just ordered one for myself. Excellent work Audrie.
Thank you for the editing tutorial! I have been looking for a way to replicate the camcorder effect because I want to use it for my assignment. I am saving this for later.
One recomendation I learned doing VHS capture to PC, if you have access to a video game console that can play 240p Test Suite, you can calibrate your capture card color, brightness, contrast etc I have an ElGato Video Capture, and after the calibration of Contrast and brightness the videos look really good.
I think that the failure here is the screen capture recording method. The proper way to do the transfer is to use a analog to digital video converter box like the Canopus ADVC 100 ($100 to $200 used), then go FW 1394 (firewire) to PC and end up with a DV or AVI file. Much more accurate display of what the analog 8 camera can do. But if one wants the easy way to do this, then fine OBS got the job done. But a pure digital conversion from analog via Firewire is the pro way to go.
I actually have an old jvc camera from the late 90s early 2000s and I have a fascinating with New York city was recorded with a camcorder in the early 2000s like skateboarding or just walking around before the 9/11 attacks and when I get a chance it's on my bucket list I wanna record myself rollerblading in New York. I record my life with this camcorder everyday its my life
Maybe a better suggestion, if you want a better capture for 60 FPS (if that camcorder is NTSC anyways) and you don’t want to spend too much money, try to buy a DVD + VHS combo that have a DVD recorder on it, I think you could connect an S video cable to it and record
Such a well presented video and love the analog look. Your voice / mic setup is a little ASMR like there's some high frequency lip sounds when you talk which took me by surprise lol. Cool that you showed the digitizing process and also how to make digital look more like the Hi8, but maybe don't need quite as much channel blur I guess but I still am not too familiar with the Premiere effects so it was useful to see
I appreciate the work. I really do. But if to dig into the topic. I believe, the true comparison of analog and digital would be watching the cassette running through the best professional player or rerecorder (or whatever its name was at the time) just on the screen - meaning watching it through the shortest chain possible. Because the way many people do like that it's comparison of digital technology recorded with an analog camera against "digital" recorded with a digital camera. For example, that easycap usb thing (or whatever its nonamed name is) is a poor choice. Than another thing - it's just one of the few analog technology. What about film? You can't compare shooting movie on a film against digital consumer camcorder. When ccd sensors were growing we thought "wow, it's so sharp!", then the first HD came out and we thought "wow, it's so sharp!", Then Full HD came out and we thought "wow, it's so sharp!". So the pictures that were shot on digital stayed in res that were shot in. But movies that were shot on film were digitalized with big sensors. And we can watch them today like they were shot in 70,80, 90 on a modern digital movie camera. In 20 years the same movie will be digitalize with bigger sensors, and they will look modern. Guess what, movies that are shot today in Full HD will stay in Full HD. Yes you can process them with effects. But it's not the same.
You´re close but not quite right. It records this digital signal into a cassette but this type of medium is not actualy analog it´s stored in a digital form on the tape. Soo... Digital VS Digital
Great video! I actually have the same set up as you. I have a Sony HDR CX405 and just bought an older JVC camcorder. I first got the Sony digital camcorder first tho. I took a few vacations in LA & Chicago and wanted to vlog along the way! The videos on my channel are all recorded by my Sony camcorder. I recently wanted to experiment around with an older camcorder because of the classic look and how it seems more intimate, idk how to fully describe it. So I looked online and got a JVC camcorder from like 2000. I'm still trying to figure out how i'm gonna transfer the film to my laptop tho hahaha
i would still pick digital over vhs just because the colours in digital look less washed out, colours are important to me. aside from that analog camcorders are really expensive and high maintenance and pretty much out of my budget. if I'm speaking like a layman right now its because i am one xD but if i had the budget id love to have both on hand, and id use either depending on what feeling i want to capture :)
Both cameras use analog sensors so there won't be much of a quality difference anyways. I use a Sony MiniDV (digital tape) camera and the quality looks exactly like your "analog" camera because the sensor itself is analog.
I used to capture Hi8 tape via firewire PCI-e card to digital file for my school-university project, you'll get a really better video quality from Hi8 with the uncompress AVI with PCM lossless audio on Windows and Prores on MAC, compare using RCA output that was down streaming to USB and then was compressed again with OBS. With firewire card it will be separated into clips as you press the record too. Or even for better quality just use the DVCAM deck with SDI output then use Blackmagic Hyperdeck to capture. I have used it last years to restore some of miniDV tapes, after that upscaled to Full HD resolution. It was really wonderful quality.
@@Baer9471 I used Sony DCR-TRV240E PAL. It has DV in/out on the camera to connect via firewire. Because it is an analog signal, it was captured to digital video 720×576(50i ) on my system.
@@mc25141 that’s a D8 camera my guy, you use Hi8 tapes on it still. Ah btw some ppl capture Hi8 analog tapes via a D8 camera (bcz firewire) and because some D8 cameras can playback analog Hi8 tapes. Is that what you mean?
I feel like I need something that’s in between these too in terms of video quality!! The analog is too grainy/blurry for my liking but the digital is wayyy to crisp & lacks character. Any suggestions?!! 🥰
Watching the Hi8 video on a laptop does NOT do justice for it at all. It looks old and 80's time. I have 20 yr old MiniDV tapes that i play on my camcorder and they look really good on that 2.5 inch screen.
Just for the record, vinyl records were NEVER outdated. The music industry TRIED to make them obsolete -- it only ended up being a VERY temporary reprieve. Now, vinyl is stronger than ever -- even more so than digital sales of music.
I have a the same type of Sony digital camcorder with touch screen menu, and got water proof housing too, takes great video.camcorders quality is so much better then a mobile phone for videos.the Sony hanycam came with pmb software.
as a professional street instant-film photographer I have to say that an unimaginable amount of people tell me I should post on tik-tok how I do my thing and live my life. I, for one, HATE the platform and detest its structure BUT I'm considering going back to analog and making youtube "vlogs" on the reality of my profession. Cool video; I dig it.
Hey, I am "modernising" an old VHS-C camcorder with a drone FPV DVR. I am hoping to be able to record analogue TVout signal, directly to Micro SD, with a sound channel. I am using a $13 eBay field recorder to capture digital audio off camera and am hoping to produce a very clean, but aesthetically satisfying video. I just stumbled on this video in my searches...
I want to grow by exploring, appreciating and treasuring all the moments of my life. I badly want to have an digital camera or recorder but as of now, my parents won't allow me because its too expensive, and hoping that I can enhace my skills in photography and filming .
5:52 mana para que le sacas la tarjeta microSD si está videocámara la Sony cx405 tiene una entrada USB y tiene un cable para conectarla a la computadora Pc windows o iMac MacOS
I have a Sony TRV 140 which I still use and just ordered the analog to digital device so I can start uploading previous and current recording to my iMac. I also have a Sony HDR as well as a 4K recorder but sometimes I just want that nostalgic look, I’m old school from the 8mm film days when I got my first 8mm camera 50 years ago to film my new born son🤣🤣
It's not really "analog vs digital", it's more like a typical 2002 vs a typical 2012 camcorder. I had a Digital8 tape camcorder to record some of my childhood videos before UA-cam, but I sadly cannot share them because they're in my dad's attic, and I'm not allowed to go there either.
Great video but that litle capturing device is not great. You could get much better quality with something else. I usualy use one those dvd recorders with hdmi out that i then attach to 1 of those hdmi to usb devices - 10$ one. Device that you use is convinient but it is really low resolution in both video and audio.
Well i have an camera which is water proof (NOT AN CAMCOREDER) And the thing is when i just film or make pictures it gets really vintage and that’s what i love! But i really want an Camcorder! ❤ My cam is currently both of the cams you are showing ❤
My personal regards for this interesting video 📽️ a well done comparison between two eras. i own a Samsung 8mm Camcorder (bought in '95..It still works!). Emotional teardrops are unavoidable😪 have a nice day! Massi from Italy
Ahhh I loved this video!! How do you find the sound quality on the digital sony handycam?? I’m looking to buy that one to shoot some home movies with my family and I’ve heard the sound can be pretty staticky and not super clear (especially outside). What’s your experience been like?
True. Although she would have to get a Digital8 camera that can convert the Hi8 recorded tape to digital. Not all of them can. So that would be a more expensive venture for her. Probably not something that is really worth it.
I would like to point out, that the quality of the analog video may be worsened by the adapter you used to digitize the footage. Cheap Analog to Digital converters MAY lose detaily or even falsify colors. I don't want to say that your usb adapter is changing the result, but a more "professional" one could make the blurry image a bit sharper!
The old hi 8 camcorders were tiny when compared to the original video cameras that used VHS tapes they were big bulky and extremely expensive at the time most people just used to rent one for a few days Rather than buy one because they cost much to the average person but modern low cost digital ones are much more affordable but their is no problem with people who prefer the older hi 8 camcorders
I kinda prefer the 8mm tape camcorders Sony made because they have a slightly bigger lens, had a moveable viewfinder, and can handle low light pretty well compared to most camcorders made today.
Started making and selling videos in 1995 with a huge SVHS Panasonic Prosumer Camcorder and after a few years switched to a HI8 Sony VX3 then onto DV, HDV 1080i then P2 720p and later h264 mp4 1080p and now I shoot Prores 10bit 422 4k 60fps onto an SSD. it is amazing how far we have come.

Doesn't Quentin Tarantino film some movies in Analogue?
I think Mad Max Fury Road 2015-ish was also Analogue
Right!
Even something as simple as the side by side of a shrub on the ground you could sense it !
I love that analog look -- it adds a certain atmosphere and cinematic flare, while the digital camcorder just looks like plain old reality, which, ya know, I see everyday through the lenses of my eyes.
Exactly this
It has nothing to do analog and everything to do with the sensor. That’s the CCD look. MiniDV is digital encoding and still gets the same look when you shoot with a CCD camera, even more so when using a 3 CCD camera like the VX1000 or 2100.

I absolutely agree.
I love analog, it just makes things look cozy whilst the comparison in digital was kinda depressing haha I need the noise and the pixels and the sound distortion 😂
Ahah yesss there’s just something about analog
I know
The pixels are the digital glitches… The analog glitches are the distorted horizontal lines of video (static, colors etc.)
Analog brings things to life while digital puts them to sleep and makes them look lifeless and boring.

That Hi-8 looked really bad. Are you using a Hi-8 tape or regular 8 ?

It was really wonderful quality.
ohh thank u for this:-) i found my moms old handycam from 2002 and was trying to find a good way to save it to my laptop
Wtf only Digital8 and MiniDV camcorders have such feature, Hi8 camcorders only have an S-video, AV and RF port on it.
But if you use an AV capture pcie card I think you will get the best results and 60 FPS
i’ve been doing research and i think a Sony Handycam DCR-SX63 could be a good in between!
I have a sony HANDYCAM DCR DVD 105 and a DCR DVD 610 both are good n will give u the perfect in between quality N are easy to learn n use
Tip: when capturing analog video from those camcorders, capture in 60/50fps. Also if you want to make the effect more true film at 60/50fps
does it make it look more grainy or something? what if you want more so of a cinematic look would you stay in 24fps?
The capture card she uses isn’t capable of 50 or 60 FPS
@@eldridgeisswagtv it doesn't change the grain. If you want it to look cinematic then definitely go for 24fps
its been a whileeee
miss ur videos so much
I’ve been living life offline for a bit 😅
The music is all I love
Watching the Hi8 video on a laptop does NOT do justice for it at all. It looks old and 80's time. I have 20 yr old MiniDV tapes that i play on my camcorder and they look really good on that 2.5 inch screen.
Just for the record, vinyl records were NEVER outdated.
The music industry TRIED to make them obsolete -- it only ended up being a VERY temporary reprieve.
Now, vinyl is stronger than ever -- even more so than digital sales of music.
ahh yes, you uploaded
I hope you enjoy 😬
me a 15 year old i decided it is time to continue the tradition of filming on tapes family vacation
I use that same method with a capture card and OBS to transfer my cassettes to a digital format
Love it 📹🐰
I have a the same type of Sony digital camcorder with touch screen menu, and got water proof housing too, takes great video.camcorders quality is so much better then a mobile phone for videos.the Sony hanycam came with pmb software.
The one with the take I sit here and I look and say disappointing I could go to de 80s or 70s for one tape
Check out 16mm film cameras, I’ve been getting into the bolex’s and krasnogorsk-3’s
as a professional street instant-film photographer I have to say that an unimaginable amount of people tell me I should post on tik-tok how I do my thing and live my life.
FUN 👏👏The fam camcorder is 👌You guys are the literal so cutest! Love from down coast
That analog camera is supeerr sick!!!
Kids trying to wear the style of the 90s and use cameras of the time because it’s “different” (yet all of them are doing it)
Could you do a Newvicon vs CCD comparison sometime? I’ve never seen them compared side by side
Hi8 gives good vibes for some reason
I want to grow by exploring, appreciating and treasuring all the moments of my life. I badly want to have an digital camera or recorder but as of now, my parents won't allow me because its too expensive, and hoping that I can enhace my skills in photography and filming .
5:52 mana para que le sacas la tarjeta microSD si está videocámara la Sony cx405 tiene una entrada USB y tiene un cable para conectarla a la computadora Pc windows o iMac MacOS
Just found your channel. Awesome😜
i have the same digital camcorder and i literally love it sm more than my better quality cameras lmaoo
It’s just brings me so much joy 🥲 hehe
Nice video on the analogue retro look. I find that 8mm is nice to shoot in B&W. Take it home and tweak it in editing and you've got a nice film.
Canon XLH1A High Definition MiniDV Camcorder V
this is old school and this is what they use in the news they are allways on sale used
Great video but that litle capturing device is not great. You could get much better quality with something else. I usualy use one those dvd recorders with hdmi out that i then attach to 1 of those hdmi to usb devices - 10$ one. Device that you use is convinient but it is really low resolution in both video and audio.
I thought the hi8 is borderline analog and digital
the trully analog one is Video8
while miniDV is digital
Well i have an camera which is water proof (NOT AN CAMCOREDER) And the thing is when i just film or make pictures it gets really vintage and that’s what i love! But i really want an Camcorder! ❤
My cam is currently both of the cams you are showing ❤
Maybe the reason we like analog so much is because it's imperfect.
nothing is perfect
@@ACommenterOnUA-camcringe
Messed it up when you Added those effects.
Thanks for this very interesting video and most and foremost... Take care of yourself.
I like the style when someone make a analog looking video out of a digital one.
It even possible to send a digital file to analog output and record to analog tape, so it's really analog, and quicker to do than all those effects.
Thats the vinyl/ analog xy music right at the Beginning
I like the background music
What is this song called?
Where you can get battery replacement of Panasonic SDR - S71
ebay
My personal regards for this interesting video 📽️ a well done comparison between two eras. i own a Samsung 8mm Camcorder (bought in '95..It still works!). Emotional teardrops are unavoidable😪 have a nice day! Massi from Italy
Ahhh I loved this video!! How do you find the sound quality on the digital sony handycam?? I’m looking to buy that one to shoot some home movies with my family and I’ve heard the sound can be pretty staticky and not super clear (especially outside). What’s your experience been like?
I think it sounds ok - not great for like music recording or ASMR or anything like that, but for pure documentation you should be fine
Sony Cx380 you can have an external mic
You should use FireWire for transfering the hi8 tapes instead of those wonky USB adapters the quality is way better
Thank you))) You are amazing🥰
Nice cameras btw
hdr is really crystal clear than vhs
Hell no Hi8 is literally better than VHS
@@Baer9471 I mean HDR on digital video recording is better because it's HD up to 8K UHD
4:12 it's like GTA on high and low settings))
can you do a side by side test between the hi8 vs vhs apps on the iphone
I wish cameras had technology that when we look through it we can see old time periods lol
I record on the Sony! It seems great quality when playing on the television but once uploaded to UA-cam, the quality goes worse
Hi 8 just looks cool
The old hi 8 camcorders were tiny when compared to the original video cameras that used VHS tapes they were big bulky and extremely expensive at the time most people just used to rent one for a few days
Rather than buy one because they cost much to the average person but modern low cost digital ones are much more affordable but their is no problem with people who prefer the older hi 8 camcorders
