  • SIX YEAR ANNIVERSARY LIVING IN THE PHILIPPINES - IS IT ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE - DO I REGRET IT
August 2016 I packed up and left the Good Ole U.S.A. and moved to The Philippines. It was one of the biggest if not the biggest decisions I have ever made in my life. Six years later I am still here. I have learned a lot of lessons and have also made a lot of mistakes in my journey here in The Philippines.

Can't say you 'saved me' over the past couple years, but you sure did provide some great information on the area. It's been some time since I was in Angeles area, just prior to Clark closing shop. I was curious what the place was like before I put in my retirement papers. Thought I'd have to go in with nothing more than the vlogger info on the 'night life' only. I was actually looking forward to learning what became of the area and the things to do other than bar hoping. I especially like the info on the park and mall areas, along with some of the new attractions that popped up over the decades. The living options were very useful as well, and I set Angeles as my initial stop and 'base' to scout the other areas of interest. Thanks for all you've done thus far, and looking forward to more info and even the casual contact you have during your daily walks.

GET A FRICKIN FLY SWATTER! Ha! Hey, you sounded down, I think I know how you feel, going through the same thing here, getting bored of the same routine. So as you suggested, trying new things, taken up astrophotography with the limited equipment I have. Satisfied with it so far, takes me out into the wilderness looking for dark skies and stuff. Also, do some arts and crafts with a partner that we sell at weekend art and farmers markets. That provides a little spending cash and puts us in touch with all sorts of people. We're on facebook and Instagram, called melars crafts. I've actually sold a couple of my nighttime photos. I frame them myself using reclaimed wood that I get from old pallets and such. Now, I don't know if those are viable ideas for you, but do something you've never done before. My dream is still to come spend my remaining years there, I fell in love with the simple life and I'm good at being alone, but we'll see what happens. I truly enjoy your videos and believe it or not, I feel like I'm walking along with you on your walks, keep them coming buddy.

Regarding the routine you describe at the end of your video, here is something you could do to overcome your minor midlife crises. Go back to the states, find a job from 8 to 5 and live for the weekends. Let’s see how long it would take for you to realize how different your life in the Philippines is and how quickly you would be back to that life. What’s your guess ? 2 weeks ?

The times I got bored , I went to a body and paint shop in my berangi and would talk to him and see how he worked and the home made tools he was using and the fine work he did. I was impressed.
A few times I helped him work on cars and I had a old compressor from Sears that I gave to him and some body tools that I had, I would no longer need or use so I gave hem those. He has seen some scratches on my Hilex and repainted them for me . So I help from Time to time.
I also go to the hog farm and help out sometimes, or to the Chicken farm and help out.
    This keeps me from boredom.

Do your walkabouts in some of the historic areas from your perspective. Old WWII places. Maybe dive on some old warships or planes. I have been told I need to get out of my comfort zone so maybe you do to. If you are thinking of moving I would suggest finding someplace with a bit of land to grow a nice size garden.

I look every day for an update and you haven’t failed. Thank you for what you do. I understand you may be bored and I wish I could give you some good suggestions. Maybe more of the tours of abandoned theme park, abandon bases, or maybe if you get there a walk through Bataan. Following the death March. But whatever you do I will enjoy once again thank you for your work.

Sometimes in life, we go through cycles of boredom and things become routine. What you need is to change things up and get a new perspective. Myself, I have discovered that when I'm learning new things my happiness in life is much better, and I am much more content. We all have regrets but those are just in my rearview can't change them anyway. Since you asked what you could do differently in your videos may I suggest? Show more of the Philippine culture and how you interact with this dynamic. You showing Walking street all the time limits the type of viewers you attract time to expand your horizons and learn new things. Thanks for the tip on Teva sandals got myself a pair and they are sweet!

Actually missed you twice when you did the Saturday walking St video and SM Mall we were there at that time. Stayed in Angles for 3 weeks and found it interesting. Visited the veterans cemetary at Clarke and a guy an American called Tim gave us a great insight into the history of the cemetaty. Found it fascinating. He manages the site and we talked about you as you too had visited. I will be back soon, my girl is waiting and will be staying hopefully permnantly soon. Take care Brian and family too

I agree almost 100 percent on your comments about expats. I live in Quezon province about 140 km southeast of Manila. I don't see many expats here. Very few. I love interacting with the Filipino people. We have several thousand square meters of land with a house and coconut trees/mangos. Many of the expats here have chemical dependency issues and mental health problems. They run from the USA without settling thier problems. I have several expat friends around Manila who I visit when I am there. I also fb messenger one of my expat friends almost daily with memes and helping him as he settles in the Philippines. God Bless your family. PS. My mother resided in King of Prussia for over 40 years until she passed. She was from the shore (Atlantic City). I love the hoagies in Philly.

Congrats on the 6 years Philly. Thanks for another great video. Being back here in Vancouver for a couple more months I enjoy your videos for the fact that I can see what things are like up in our area, and sometimes hear news about different things that are going on.
You have said sometimes your channel feels like it's a bit stale so if I can make a suggestion, why not feature some of the other cities (Clark, San Fernando, Mexico, etc., up in that area) and do some walk-abouts in those areas, so for people looking to make Central Luzon home they can see some good and bad about different cities and municipalities in that general area if you feel like Vlogging outside Angeles some days?
Your videos are much appreciated, ... and probably even more so for those of us who are out of the country right now.

I’ve been going to the Philippines since the mid-1970’s and love visiting, but I know that I could never live there. My kids and grandkids are here and I could not leave them behind. Also, I have some medical issues. You have mentioned several times that medical care is hit or miss there even in a big city like Angeles. Another thing a lot of people don’t realize is that Medicare is not recognized there. So, for now, I’m staying in Philly not the Philippines.

Talking about being bored reminded me of the Andy Griffith Show episode when Howard dropped everything and moved to the Caribbean.

The good I found having a Suri Suri store is ,. You get to know the people in your area the good ones and the bad ones , you are not going to get rich but it can cover cost and a little gain and gives you something to do.
No regrets from me. I did paint a sign on the front of my store saying ( in God we trust all others pay cash No Credit )

May I recommend that you get a change in scenery for a little while. Maybe a road tripping tour or a car camping tour for maybe a month of the Cordillera region, different weather, different vibe, different culture, different topography, and up and down zigzag roads. Go to coldest place or area of the Philippines (not Baguio City), see rice paddies and vegetable or flower gardens going up mountains like stairways to the clouds. You can take a lot of pictures, maybe learn the very different cultural traditions or the cultural history and places of history, and maybe get a tattoo from Apo Whang-od.
Anyways, the rains start to slow down in the Cordilleras by November, and start coming back again in July. Coldest in the months of January and February, and hottest in April and May.
