This was one of my beginner jets, still a favorite. I used a jailbroke AR631 from my crashed Viper 70mm , gains worked perfect. Yes I lost the canopy once too. Made mine into an Aggressor livery.
Very nice video with all the adjustments. I like seeing different landing approaches and what can work and not :P I wonder if I could do grass ops :// Thanks for the vid!!
About time you got your hands on this! I'm hoping u also review the Tigercat too. This F18 is gorgeous and sounds lovely. I just ripped out the gear and made it a belly lander and fly on 8s 4000. I use it more often at my field cos of its ease of use. Great review Brian 👍🏾
Great video. Every time you say China glue 😂😂😂 I appreciate these long format videos to. This is where I go to find out everything about a plane I'm interested in.
This plane has been on my "planes to get" for so long, and for whatever reason, I always wind up buying something else. I need to just pull the trigger and get one already, haha
Phillips last weekend I saw the real thing up close. One hell of a machine I was standing probably 50 to 100 feet from two that were both idling and good Lord are they loud. I hope you get to see the real thing up close and personal running. No UA-cam video can do it justice.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Rhino is the callout for the Super Hornet. It is meant to distinguish from the “legacy” hornet on an aircraft carrier. For example, you’ll hear a legacy call out “Roger, Hornet Ball…” when lining up on the carrier. If they say Super Hornet when one is lining up, then a garbled comm could make the LSO hear “hornet” and he’d act like it’s a legacy which flies differently. So to mitigate that they started calling Super Hornets “rhinos”.
Maybe they could communicate with us, to make it easier to work with them. We've never heard from them, and have reached out. Tell them you'd like to see us review their product, and we'll be happy to work with them ;)
Is there a way with the receiver to use full control, but when you release the sticks it Goes to safe and flies straight? So fly without bank limits etc. I know its not the learning way, but it would be the way im comfortable with flying and progressing to flying without safe. Im still learning with my xfly t7a and want more bank angles and more ability to loop and roll in safe. Btw really Nice flying and good looking plane.
Thanks, and YES, I believe there is a way - The setting in FORWARD PROGRAMMING First time SAFE setup allows for "Angle Demand / Other description I can never remember..." - I believe you pick the OTHER OPTION when choosing this. OR there are numeric values which set how much pitch and roll limits will be.
I feel that like configuration would result in developing some bad habits. Instead of aviating and trying to work yourself out of a bad situation you might condition yourself to just let it go and fix itself. At least with safe on a switch you try until you have no choice, then flip the switch.
Leave you guys alone for five minutes…and it’s another REALLY cool plane! Who needs sleep? And all of a sudden, I need one of those…and I like self applied decals- if you want to do detailing, it’s much easier without them!
Say Brian, I see you set up a lot of Spektrum receivers for AS3X and SAFE. Do you have a video devoted to just this topic, and could you recommend one for someone setting up an AR630 for the first time? This would be a great topic for a video if you haven't done one. Thanks!
I just think this plane is one that's gonna take a lot of tinkering with to get flying right. Also, with a tight runway and approach, we are limited in our abilities here, you might not have this tight of an approach. Tip stalls are going to be more likely when turning tight on base leg, but less to do with full length flaps, in my opinion, and more to do with speed, angle, of approach.
Retracts holes should've served as cheater holes, but nose retract should've had doors. LANDING FLAPS: Increase drag more than they increase lift. So, on hi wing they cause ballooning & on low wing cause nose down. Should be 45-60deg. Elevator must be mixed enough to make plane fly at the verge of stall. In real plane called setting trims for landing. Once landing flaps deployed, u control decent with throttle alone like u did on your 5th flight landing.
This plane required more fiddling than we've had to do in quite a long time, but still really enjoyed this plane. I only wish I would have stuck with simple inboard flaps...would have worked FINE...BUT, then I would have always thought, "What If" ;)
The right 4k battery all day. I run smc 4k all the way back until it stops! and get 4plus minutes average stick smashing. It’s my warmup plane no matter what! Small enough takes little space and doesn’t need mixes anywhere full span flaps are not needed. This is a rare beast that’s awesome with the latest version.
This is not an easy bird to tame, I commend you on bringing her back in one piece. For anyone thinking this is a starter jet, think again.I have no headache and enjoyed some nice shots, thank you camera crew.
I was surprised how hard it was to get it refined, but now that it is, she flies NICE!!! Want to fly her in dead calm conditions so I can really see how she does!
Great stuff, per usual. BTW- Jon said it's actually called a "Cobra". Not a "Scorpion". Lol And that dude beats down more Cobras than a Karate Kid movie 👍
Horizon Hobby redid their website, and ERP, and they are having some growing pains. This will be resolved very soon. Most of the issues are getting fixed, but some are remaining. Definitely not going out of business.
@markmcc21 i get what youre saying. However, if you compare the Yak-130 set-up to the F-18.. night and day Canopy wire broke after 3 flights. Wanted to love this thing... walked away with wanting more takeoff power, and greatly dissatisfied with flaps. Im glad you like it .. good luck with yours 🙂
@redwineisfine the Hobbywing/Predator 120A esc. 8s compatible. I use it in my 80mm jets for 7s power and 70mm jets for 7s and 8s power. When running 80mm jets on 8s id recommend the 150A esc. The 120A esc is very cheap at £60. In the F18 at 7s ul gain 250g and 8s 750g of thrust. Makes the jet a lot more fun.
I look at it this way, I watch these videos because I'm into the hobby.. umm F'ing duh, So when I buy whatever I buy, wherever I buy it,, I'm supporting the advertisers/sellers/ manufacturers.. you know so they can keep making stuff and pay UA-cam for advertising... And THIS hobby is addictive lol,, so WE (cause I ain't alone) keep coming back. Ok let me put that another way. IF the channels I watch aren't there , I don't pay for stuff that I don't know about , THEY don't sell enough.. no more advertising $$ for UA-cam... Hmmm 🤔 , working on cutting their own throat as well as yours. Stupid business plan y'all .. That's ok... I'll have more time back actually doing something instead of wasting my time online.
UA-cam can be impossible. We have THOUSANDS of videos, and they'll send out these automated messages from "people" and hundreds or thousands of them at a time, and expect we can just, at the drop of a hat, fix this crap. For us, it was a P-47 link, which was buried in the middle of hundreds of other links in our video description...they had previously decided that this link was "Spam" for some reason...so we read their policy on "Span" which is typically vague, and idiotic....we can't even define what a Man or Woman is, so I'll let you decide how clear this is...so then we appealed, and they said, it's not spam...and HUNDREDS of other emails started pouring in saying OTHER "spam" items were NOT spam. It's like dealing with a moody teenage girl, who complains that you don't give her enough money for spending at the mall, while she doesn't work, and doesn't have any income. Then when you get 100,000 subscribers...yeah, you have to have THAT MUCH, you get "chat support", which is what we used to argue with them. This was after they pulled ANOTHER 180 and said the P-47 link WAS spam, and we appealed AGAIN, and this time they said - The appeal is final, after THROUGH review (5 minutes) the "human" had made their final decision...and that link will not be displayed in our "descriptions". We were like, omg, that's crazy....and we BOUGHT that short link domain from GOOGLE!!!! Megan and I spent HOURS fighting this mess, then all of a sudden, the link works again?!??!?! What the heck are we supposed to do!??! That being said, the MFG make money when you buy, but when you buy from our links, we earn small percentages, and this really makes our channel work. UA-cam already steals a HUGE percentage of our "ad revenue", which is why we don't really "plan on it", while the "sales" are where we get paid for the 50-70 hours we both work on this channel each week. It's NOT easy, as it looks. I promise you, many have tried, and most fail...heck, we're pretty much "failures" compared to some of the big channels, but what I want you to know, and seriously hear me on this... When you buy from our links, it gives US clout with the MFG'ers...this is clout we use to provide REAL DIRECT FEEDBACK, that from a customer, unless they hear it 100 or 1000 times, they'll write off as a fluke...ALL MFG's, not just the big ones. Anyway, this is a scary place to be. We TRY to follow all the BS, arbitrary rules here, and we get nothing but grief. It's asinine. Now that we have some income coming in, which is pretty much all spent at the end of the year, investing mostly in our little RC airport, and full scale airport...in fact, we'll probably have a pretty big LOSS this year on our "small business". I would love to go on, but realize you may not have time to read a book right now, and I KNOW I don't have time to write it at the moment. Maybe some day we can meet in person, and discuss this in more detail. It's kinda crazy stuff, and most can't really be spoken about in a public setting. Hope this makes sense.

Awesome flights 🫡Brian! Love my 70 mm F/A -18 . Don’t fly it as much any more due to me being in love with the Viper 90!
Hey Brian! Did you get new sound equipment? That jet sounds amazing! And watching you bring it in had me on the edge of my seat! Great flying
just noticed you decided to bury the powerlines. Looks great
Such a great plane!
That plane flies great but really needs new version
That’s one good looking “Rhino” (Navy nickname to distinguish between the legacy and super Hornets)
Rhino meaning the legacy, correct?

I wonder there is no rudder.. how it can be turuning right and left??
do the full length flaps just cause tip stalling

Sorry to be a bonehead, but 70mm must mean the size of the ducted fan? I was thinking wingspan but no way. 70mm is only about 2 3/4 inches. 🥴
Yep! EDF's are always measured by fan size, and prop planes are measured by wingspan. Go figure.
This was such a disappointment. The canopy is cheaply locked in.. it needs a version update..
