In this video, Berklee Online course author Ben Camp discusses the fine balance of using contrast and repetition in your songs to achieve its purpose. Using the metaphor of buildings, he explores the ways using repeating or contrasting rhythms, melodies, and harmonies can be used (or misused) to fulfill the overall purpose of your song.

I've come up with a chorus. Would a song with this chorus be worthy of a #1 hit?:
(Backing vocals create emphasis on the words "against me" and "against me now")
What do you hold against me?
What do you hold against me now?
What do you hold against me?
What do you hold against me now?
(backing vocals only)
Ooh, you're against me
Ooh, you're against ne now
Ooh, you're against me
Ooh, you're against ne now
Was the name for this concept, composition ?
Too much chaos is Jazz!
Great notes for writing for other people. I do not disagree with the logic, I simply prefer to write for myself. Organic verses forced. But perhaps I'm biased towards real more so than fake. Hell, I don't even have the hipster haircut this gentlemen does, so what do I know?
Is it?
Idk, a song to me is real once it's created whether it's using a formula or jamed. They all have their purpose i think
Theory isnt limiting or fake, its understanding what things do, it tends to be worded in a way thats focussed on what sounds pleasing to the ear, but thats not really all its good for if you look deeper, its about knowing what to do to express or convey what you want to convey. Would a poem be expressive if the poet didnt know what words to use and how to use them? Maybe to them but to other people probably not, thats great and all if all you care about is putting in the expression and not if the person experiencing it gets the expression out of it then more power to you, i think you shouldnt focus much on what other people want, but art to me is still about how the outside observer percieves it and for them to get out of it what i intend them to that requires knowing how things work, which is theory.
So its not fake, its craftsmanship.
Just dont get stuck in a formula.
Speak clearer please
