You still have this box Big D? After watching your video I kind of wanted to build one of these. At first I was thinking maybe using 6" CTs or JL W0s or something entry level but then I realized why Polk used the 6x9s. You're almost getting the surface area of an 8" driver but your box can still stay kind of flat because the driver is never more than 6" high anywhere. So four 6x9s is better than four 6s all things being equal. So I got looking around for a 6x9" subwoofer and found these Tang Band W69-1042J 6x9 subs on parts express and was thinking of maybe picking up four of them to try it out. They're only $60 a pop if you buy four. Would get a final load of 1.8 ohm, they play down to 35hz on paper. They're looking at 90w RMS/170w max and I'm sitting on a JL 250/1 that would power it quite nicely. So then I got thinking... This box you have is all beautiful and kerfed and tuned nicely and all this... and I'm terrible at box construction... The idea of trying to get that center chamber completely sealed is kind of daunting in and of itself... So, back to my initial question.. Do you still have this box, and if so, would you be willing to part with it? I would give it a good home and listen to it on the daily. Send me a message or something, we can work out shipping or whatever.
You are right. So glad to grow up in the 90s when it seemed like bass was such a big deal. I built my first diamond when I was 15. It was 4 15 inch jl w1's with a 100 HC.I had literally saved up money for almost 2 entire years for this build. I got everything done in a weekend. My father got into our Ford Bronco (1985),and I remember him looking back and saying "what the fuck did you do to the truck? What the fuck is that thing back there?". As always,my father being the good sport and letting me do my teenage thing. He let me keep everything installed. The first ride we took in it together I still remember the look of disbelief on his face. 90s=Great great times.
Erick M I could not agree more:) Old school audio is way better than this cookie cutter plug and play crap now days. Back in the late 80s early 90s audio was being driven by demand, design & desire to bring bigger better bass and SQ.
What the new generation doesn't understand is that you don't need a 1500+ rms sub to get alot of bass.. you can get just as much from a 500 rms with the right enclosure and vehicle acoustics.
Im 17 and for the past 2 months I’ve been slowly getting my first 2 12s and amp etc. Obviously I’m part of the new generation but nonetheless I’m still highly interested in the roots of car audio.
Man, I love CV's! My buddy had a pair of the AT-15's back in high school and I was always jealous of those! I do more videos of car amps than anything else, but will do a video on CV speakers sometime in the future when I get my hands on some. Thanks for the comment.
Speakers have a positive and negative connection. If you wire it out of phase (amp positive connection to speaker negative, amp negative to speaker positive), it pulls the cone in instead of pushing it out when the bass hits. If you have two speakers facing each other, one must be wired so it goes in while the other goes out. Otherwise, there would be cancellation of the sound.
I stumbled upon this video again and it is fascinating. By now I have completely upgraded my stereo with a sony mex n5000bt receiver, 4 infinity reference 6x8's, a mono 500 watt alpine amp, and a 12 inch alpine type s with the upgraded suspension and spider design and it is in a big ported cube sub box
I had 2 of these back in the 90s and omg they really rocked for what they was and everyone that heard them thought i had more then 6x9s in my trunk! thanks for the flashback!
i have this Polk C4 in my car and its in the family since 1992 and im 23 im the same age as the speaker. But damn people. Im still in love with those speaker
I'm sure Polk Audio would be the better one to ask. It has to do with the specific design of the isobarik loading where the inner box is sealed and the outer chambers are ported. Very unique, space saving and fantastic SQ sub. It won't break any windshields, but will add more than enough bass for most people (non bass heads, that is)
Isobaric design truly is the best box you can build you can have clam shell style with one large box for low bass and another smaller sealed box for punchy higher bass , they truly do sound better than any other box but they didnt get much attention and you would be hard pressed to find one but yeah isobaric speakers are the best way to go .
I got this locally from a friend in amazing condition. Always remembered them from back in the day, never got a chance to look inside. Glad you like, this video took me an entire day to film and edit.
I have the Scosche Stealthbox with an old Kicker S10 Solo Baric sub for my stealth system. It fits in the rear storage compartment beside the spare tire. It puts out a decent amount of bass, doesn't flex the windshield or nothing, but it definitely gives some kick! I have my 4ch amp mounted under the driver's seat and also upgraded the front speakers and head unit. Sounds great to me
Wow, this brings back some good memories! I remember checking this thing out when they were new.....we couldn't believe there were just 6x9's in there.....
I built a box like that with four bostwick 8" subs in the 90s, it sounded unreal. Ran it 2ohm stereo on a ppi a600. I'd remembered seeing the polk box in a car audio magazine way back when and got the subs used for practically nothing...and was bored. It was worth it.
I just wanted to make it clear about my donations request...this is completely voluntary and I'm only asking for help from those who have the means (and want) to help out. I didn't intend to come across as begging for money or anything. It took me about 6 hours to create this video and the more support I have, the more videos I'll be able to put out there. Thanks for understanding!
God I grew up in the 80's and90's and I use to help my brother hook up his stuff. Got my first set of 12's way back when the Orion xtr2's first hit the market. I still own them . god I wish I could turn back the hands of time lol .
6x9 as subs that can be pushed with a small 400 watt amplifier would make anyone laugh today till they heard it and wouldnt believe its 4 6X9's in 1 box till ya opened it and showed em its actually 6x9's
Hey man, you should probably put it on eBay. I'd look into shipping though as it's gonna be high. These are really cool subs and it's awesome to know there are more working examples out there. I'm glad my video and write up helps, I sometimes get frustrated looking for info on old items and when I make a video, I try to take the time to complete the research to get as much info as possible. It takes much longer this way, but I'm good with that.
Used to use old 6x9s or 6.5s as subwoofers for single cab trucks years ago. Always worked great. Never was super loud outside the truck but it sounded great inside.
Street series RockFord Fogate cheap ass Punch subs...just made to meet a low budget price point...definitley made NO bass...Polk Audio 4 6x9s double isobaric way too complicated & poor sound quality & poor SPL...Currently still running late 80's & early 90's RFF & Polk Audio equipment....good quality besides street series
I had this box in my 92 Ranger extended cab. Had a Rockford forgaye running through it. For it's size it hit hard. Nemesis and DJ Magic Mike would definitely have people turning their heads. Wish I still had that box.
I had a 1992 Buick Regal Limited with 4x10's which I had found brackets to mount 6x9's in with a Coustic 180 watt amp and 5 1/4's in the front doors. My Regal hit so hard, for 6x9's that is. Thanks for the video and I will be visiting your site because I have a Ram Quad Cab that has 6x9's in the front doors that I have to upgrade, thanks. People underestimate the 6x9 a lot.
It also had a pretty good review from a Car Stereo Review article. It is difficult to get a good sound impression on UA-cam, but I'd compare it to a nice set of 8" subs. It has enough output to make your hair move a little, plus it is very clean. I used it for a few weeks then took it out and put in a pair of Boston ProSeries 10.5's. Those have WAY more output and give me all the bass I need. Thanks for the comment.
I think Tang Band still makes some ultra high excursion 6x9's, which should put out approx. the same as 8's. I'm not sure if your 6x9's are Tang Band, but they make some pretty awesome subs...I want to try some of their 8s from Parts Express.
It is a premium Scion head unit, available as an upgrade. I bought it 2nd hand, but new it was around 600. It is made by Pioneer, some of the newer Scion premium head units are made by Alpine
Yeah man, this box sounds great with rock music. It's nice and punchy and seems to handle the kick drum well. It's not HUGE output or anything, but definitely an upgrade over a stock system and isn't a big box
Holy shit!!! I had a dream about these the other night, as I have always wanted one since I saw them in crutchfield many lightyears ago. Would love to hear it someday just to see how it sounds thanks for posting.
Thank you sir! Camera is Panasonic HDC-TM700 and Microphone is Sony ECM mini shotgun mic. I have some other professional audio recording gear I'll use in future videos.
Around 300w RMS. It was punchy and dynamic, but not enough bass for those wanting to rattle windshields. Sorry, it's not currently for sale, will be part of my planned old school car audio museum
I remember this from back in my high school days. I looked at your upload list and was surprised you didn't have anything from Cerwin Vega. They're one of my favorites and I currently have a pair of VS-100 home speakers I refoamed last month and they still rock out! Thanks for posting the vid!
It sounds pretty good for what it is. The box is relatively small and low profile, puts out what you'd expect from 2 decent 8" subs. It would be a fantastic upgrade for most factory systems with a 300-400w monoblock amp!
In 1990 MTX made an isobaric box in sort of a trapezoid shape box with length. Haven't been able to find this box anywhere, after all these years, they were probably trashed into non-existence. I do remember seeing and hearing it. The bass was incredibly low and massive, the downside was, it was a very heavy box, suitable for vans and larger vehicles.
I had one in a Camaro SS--- these are awesome in hatchbacks. Most people thought it was a 10 or 12, the SQ was great. Polk made a few versions, this is a later one with the black drivers, the early ones were plain stamped steel baskets and no magnet covers. Later they made the inside of the box smooth, where those slats are now as they had a tendency to crack apart from age and use. Wish I still had one, sold both of mine when I sold my Camaro.
holy shit i bought one of these new in like 93 when i was 14. i put it in a friends escort gt and it sounded good for about an hr untill it blew all 4 speakers. ive never seen another one of these since. i wish i had one for my truck now lol
Love the vid. When I seen "4 6x9's" in the title I thought it was gonna be a lame setup, but I was impressed with the setup polk had put together to make the box. Thx for sharing.
Years ago I had two boxes in trunk, one sealed 10" sub and one 8" ported and it's sounds very good, the sound quality from subs was mixed ported and sealed and end result was very well. However sound specialist said that will be a mistake to do that, but for me it sounds much more likeable that now two 12" ported. The car shake's now but sound quality not so good.
I have one of these still it's stored up in the attic of my shed. I'm thinking about getting it out and selling it on eBay. I used to run this off of Rockford fosgate punch 75 and it sounded amazing to me.
Ranvir Sangha thank you for noticing! I try to take the time to ensure audio is top notch in my videos. I currently use a Panasonic HDC-TM700 with an attached Sony ECMxxx mic (sorry, can't recall model # right now). The Sony mic is VERY good, not pro level, but as you stated, MUCH better than any onboard mic. Thanks for the comment.
As I was watching this in 2018 I was like man that video quality is spot on for 2015 lol. Wish I had know about you in 2015, just started watching last year but love all the content.
If you can borrow Doc's Delorean, set the time to 1992...you should be able to find them at Polk dealers, but they were not cheap. I'll have to look at my directories, but I think the MSRP was around 500. Sorry dude, I got lucky and found mine local on CL and it's not for sale.
About the same surface area as 8's. It won't shake the car, but will give you a nice kick in the back of the seat, raise the hairs on the back of your neck :-)
I created that song on my iPad using GarageBand. I can make it available via Creative Commons attribution license. I'll update the description with the download info.
Early 1990's only a few 4th Order bandpass boxes were made. Polk being one. The other was another manufacture, I can't remember the name, but it was a triangle truck box configuration with port holes at each outside end of the box. The drivers were four 6x9 subs as well. ISO boxes can get that low deep, rich bass in small size, where a sealed 10" box will deliver that "thump".
Sadly, the head unit has been sold, but I still have the C4 and plan to keep it as long as I can. Many of the newer Pioneer head units have those analog looking VU meters as an option for the display
I'd say a good 300-400w should do the trick. There are two 4ohm connections, so you could do a 2ohm monoblock or a higher powered 2 channel amp at 4 ohms
That's neat. I have a 2001 Ford Focus station wagon and it is stock. The speakers it has are 6x9's, 4 of them and they don't sound bad at all. It even has bass and treble adjustments on the stock head unit, but I leave them both at 0 because the limiter turns down the bass at certain high volumes, but they really don't need to be boosted to sound good, which I think is pretty good for a stock system that doesn't have a subwoofer.
Nice, I was always facinated with iso-baric subs till I tried it. The space savings wasn't enough to double up the drivers. Then the Solobarics came out & JL Audio followed suit & who needed isobaric.
@iceman020187 It is a Pioneer HU made specifically for Scion's. It is the "premium" model T1809. The VU meters are WAY cool. I like stealth looking HU's to keep prying eyes away!!

I'd like to pick up one of these. Even with bad speakers n put 4 new more efficient speakers in. Great review Thanks brother D
my dad told me stories about him havin' these kinds of speakers back when he was in school! they do sound really awesome :D
It's in the plans friend...one day if I'm able, there will be an OldSchoolStereo museum!
This new generation always cracks me up, if it's not a sundown or some bass head stuff they wont even try to understand it or appreciate it.

Each individual understands it differently. For me 1kw RMS of bass is more than enough but some would just laugh at it :D
back when polk was quality
Polk audio still makes really good home audio speakers.
*cough* Nakamichi makes $40 CD players now
Just put in some 6.5 coaxials from them in my truck and are actually decent quality
Polk is still OK. Just not great anymore.
Man, I love CV's! My buddy had a pair of the AT-15's back in high school and I was always jealous of those! I do more videos of car amps than anything else, but will do a video on CV speakers sometime in the future when I get my hands on some. Thanks for the comment.
ahhh, i miss this thing... had 1 in 1999/2000.. sounded great
It does sound great, impossible to portray in a UA-cam video
Dereck BigDWiz hey was this the one for sale on ebay ?
the clean sound of these type of subs is something to die for nowadays.
Thanks for the comment and sub! I'm still diggin' my xB, although nobody else in my family seems to like it
This channel is great. The Sad part is that here in Brazil old school stuff is freaking expansive. Keep it up bro
+Bruno Werneck 👌😊👍

Me too! I remember an install in a '92 Prelude in a CA&E magazine. It was very clean and simple, think it's great for the size.
I had 2 of these back in the 90s and omg they really rocked for what they was and everyone that heard them thought i had more then 6x9s in my trunk! thanks for the flashback!
Yeah man these were the bees knees back then. Very cool to still have one in such good shape too 🤙
i have this Polk C4 in my car and its in the family since 1992 and im 23 im the same age as the speaker. But damn people. Im still in love with those speaker
Yes sir! Thanks for the response Sam!
Thanks man! It's all good, not everyone can appreciate tight, punchy bass...they want multiple 18's and 1000's of watts.
I'm impressed with the output of 4 6X9's! Plus, your iPad beats are clean too! 👍

Cool, I remember these C4 setups, thanks for demoing & showing the inside!
I got this locally from a friend in amazing condition. Always remembered them from back in the day, never got a chance to look inside. Glad you like, this video took me an entire day to film and edit.
BigDWiz Can you contact me at: arcadedude44@gmail.com?
Sweet!
Oh man, I remember that!! I wanted one so bad! I used to sit there and drool over the Crutchfield catalog...
4th order subs used to be known as "one note wonders" because the frequency bandwith was very narrow.
sugarmaker67 They have gotten a lot better since 1992 though :-)
Great information! I had no idea there were two different versions. Thanks for the post and additional info.
I have the Scosche Stealthbox with an old Kicker S10 Solo Baric sub for my stealth system. It fits in the rear storage compartment beside the spare tire. Loving that Pioneer frontend, with power meters.... awesome!
The DEH-80PRS also has this analog meter mode...as well as more including some cool spectrum analyzer modes
It is very clean and dynamic, not a boom box by any means, but will give a nice kick to the back of your seat and raise the hair on your neck!

Sweet! Not sure why but I’ll take it!
Used to use old 6x9s or 6.5s as subwoofers for single cab trucks years ago. Always worked great. Never was super loud outside the truck but it sounded great inside.
Even bazooka 6.5 tubes sounded good in a small pickup
Seeing that old Fosgate sub reminds me.... do a test with an 18" Punch Z !!! LOLOL!
Street series RockFord Fogate cheap ass Punch subs...just made to meet a low budget price point...definitley made NO bass...Polk Audio 4 6x9s

I had this box in my 92 Ranger extended cab. Had a Rockford forgaye running through it. For it's size it hit hard. Nemesis and DJ Magic Mike would definitely have people turning their heads. Wish I still had that box.

interesting design, got here from youtube recommendation, happy I did, given me some ideas now doing the out of phase push pull
Never seen anything like that!
That's why I wanted to do the video...prolly a lot of people haven't seen it. Thanks for the comment.
Your welcome!
Joshua's Recordings man, I remember when these came out
Ive grown to love the sound all around quality of 6x9s subs. Over any other subs
Yeah man, this box sounds great with rock music. It's nice and punchy and seems to handle the kick drum well. It's not HUGE output or anything, but definitely an upgrade over a stock system and isn't a big box
I remember these, a girl at school had one in a hatch back. I wanted to put one in my moms Toyota. I can’t believe you found one.

Around 300w RMS. It was punchy and dynamic, but not enough bass for those wanting to rattle windshields. Sorry, it's not currently for sale, will be part of my planned old school car audio museum

It sounds pretty good for what it is. The box is relatively small and low profile, puts out what you'd expect from 2 decent 8" subs. It would be a fantastic upgrade for most factory systems with a 300-400w monoblock amp!
It's all about efficient use of space vs. output. The 6x9's have the surface area of approx an 8 inch sub and using two as one provides more output
Thanks for getting me back to car audio!
Welcome back brother 🤙

I had one in a Camaro SS--- these are awesome in hatchbacks. Most people thought it was a 10 or 12, the SQ was great. Polk made a few versions, this is a later one with the black drivers, the early ones were plain stamped steel baskets and no magnet covers.
Later they made the inside of the box smooth, where those slats are now as they had a tendency to crack apart from age and use. Wish I still had one, sold both of mine when I sold my Camaro.
never seen that enclosure design before ...thanks bigdwiz for showing it
holy shit i bought one of these new in like 93 when i was 14. i put it in a friends escort gt and it sounded good for about an hr untill it blew all 4 speakers. ive never seen another one of these since. i wish i had one for my truck now lol
I remember those, at the time it was introduced it had great output for such a small box.
Not bad at all for what it is
That's pretty cool
Love the vid. When I seen "4 6x9's" in the title I thought it was gonna be a lame setup, but I was impressed with the setup polk had put together to make the box. Thx for sharing.
Years ago I had two boxes in trunk, one sealed 10" sub and one 8" ported and it's sounds very good, the sound quality from subs was mixed ported and sealed and end result was very well. However sound specialist said that will be a mistake to do that, but for me it sounds much more likeable that now two 12" ported. The car shake's now but sound quality not so good.
Wow love that meter on the head unit so cool!
Always been a huge fan of Polk! Currently have db 6 1/5" on two doors of my car, which is a xB scion ,they make super good home audio subs too
👌😬👍
that headunit is really good looking
I have one of these still it's stored up in the attic of my shed. I'm thinking about getting it out and selling it on eBay. I used to run this off of Rockford fosgate punch 75 and it sounded amazing to me.
I just put mine on ebay.
@normalicy I bet doing newer amp output tests would help me get there sooner...Just too expensive to buy the amps just to test/demo..knowwhatImean?
What camera you are using for recording because sound so clean and brightest ever heard from any handy cam
Dereck BigDWiz thank you for quick reply sir
i must say u did very good job and put because of afford and result is top of line
As I was watching this in 2018 I was like man that video quality is spot on for 2015 lol. Wish I had know about you in 2015, just started watching last year but love all the content.
Yes, each pair of 6x9's are wired out of phase so as one pushes air forward, the other pulls back
If you can borrow Doc's Delorean, set the time to 1992...you should be able to find them at Polk dealers, but they were not cheap. I'll have to look at my directories, but I think the MSRP was around 500. Sorry dude, I got lucky and found mine local on CL and it's not for sale.
Not sure, I'll review the literature I have and see if they mention it. I'll reply back when I find out
This brings back memories.
About the same surface area as 8's. It won't shake the car, but will give you a nice kick in the back of the seat, raise the hairs on the back of your neck :-)
Yes, they were popular in the mid 90's
Polk suggests 25-200 watts per channel for this sub. Somebody asked, but removed their own post. Just FYI
I created that song on my iPad using GarageBand. I can make it available via Creative Commons attribution license. I'll update the description with the download info.
This is an old video, but Polk is a good brand. Thanks Big D!
Very cool design, even for 2020. Needs a plexi bottom to show off the goodies
50-200 watts per channel is suggested according to the Polk specs. This sub is not self powered, you provide the amplification
I have a spec sheet on it, will check when I get home.
Wanted one of these so bad in 00. Being from Baltimore Polk was what you wanted and then when they came out with momo subs dayyyyuuuum
this is new to me , I like this
Wow! That must be a pretty beast camera to have that good quality without distorting the bass! Nice system too
I'd say a good 300-400w should do the trick. There are two 4ohm connections, so you could do a 2ohm monoblock or a higher powered 2 channel amp at 4 ohms
Thanks for demonstrating six by nines in a carpeted nonn sealed ported speaker encl.
Ford cars use 5x7/6x8 speakers.
*****
Yeah, you're right, went to crutchfield.com and they are 6x8s.
Chris Ward
Also the front and rear are both 6x8s and both have same great audio quality.
Do you know of any plans to diy your an enclosure like this or does anyone still make something similar.
Thanks for the video. Definitely a very unique subwoofer.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Nice, I was always facinated with iso-baric subs till I tried it. The space savings wasn't enough to double up the drivers. Then the Solobarics came out & JL Audio followed suit & who needed isobaric.
@bassmansoundking99 Thanks man, those VU meters are mesmerizing! I can't wait until SMD / D'Amore Engineering releases their new VU meter display
@iceman020187 It is a Pioneer HU made specifically for Scion's. It is the "premium" model T1809. The VU meters are WAY cool. I like stealth looking HU's to keep prying eyes away!!
i wonder how this sub will do on the woofer cooker song? will it explode like a c4?
@normalicy The cool factor is there, but yes, this box would most likely be outdone by two 8 in solobarics or two of my JL 8W6's
