I was 15 and it was 1992. I was soooooo into Nirvana. I saved up enough money from my paper route to buy my first pedal. Someone told me that “Come as you are” used a thing called “Flanger” so I got a Boss Flanger BF-2. I still have it, and now it’s considered “vintage” which sorta hurts.
My BS-3 is 15 years old, yeah yours is definitely vintage.
I was 15 in 95, and my first two pedals I bought together, it was a standard Crybaby Wah and an Ibanez Chours pedal..I still have the chorus pedal, and I loned a friend the wah...yeah, I should've NEVR done that.☹️

My first pedal was a DS-1. Used it for a little while and then replaced it. Rediscovered the DS-1 a few years ago and couldn’t believe how good it could sound if you take the time to dial it in!

I still use that pedal in my setup after almost 20 yrs live. Most songs, I just leave it on and turn the volume knob down til you get a nice clean tone with that little bit of grit. And with a good booster pedal behind it, reverb, it’s a great pedal. Very versatile

My 1st distortion pedal, hell my 1st pedal I ever owned was the original version of the Boss DS-1. But I haven't used it In a while. I'm currently using the Friedman BE-OD for my overdrive tone. I tried this pedal years ago in a guitar center and fell in love with its sound. It will probably never leave my signal chain.
My very first pedal was a cheap Ibanez Tube Screamer when I was 15. My friend gave it to me. Very nice of him.

First pedal was obviously DS-1 just like everybody else lol. First one I bought though was a Vox repro wah, and ended up trading it about a year after. Only have two pedals now, a soul food overdrive and a ditto looper. And that'll be all I ever use for my music at this time. But seeing that orange box always brings back nostalgia. Just like that fender strap in your videos. Everyone had them when they started out
I like your stuff Mike. You don't go instantly overboard on anything but you play clean & dial in the risk factor little by little (while growing all the time)
This was the first gain pedal I ever got when I was 13 and I ended up gravitating to the the rat for the distortion I wanted but when I returned to the ds-1 to mess with it it blew me away the versatility this thing holds as a boost in front of your favorite amp settings. No classic pedal has surprised me as much as this one.

The DS-1 is a must have! I've had mine for about 10 years and I can't help but use it in every iteration of of my pedal rig that I've done.
My first one was a boss ODB-3 and I still have it. I use it as a boost with low gain. Sounds great.
I went in the same experience as you wanting a pedal and they sold me a zoom 505 for about a hundred. Kind of expensive relative other pedals but in hindsight they did a great job because that was the perfect pedal to plug into any amp and get a decent stage worthy sound, where the fx chorus compression distortion etc built right in.
First pedal was a Metal Zone, sometime in the '90's. It is sitting right in front of me, right now.

My first was a EHX Muff Fuzz. It's not a Big Muff, but rather a little rectangular box with one knob and an on/off switch. I got it back in the late 70's I think and it blew my mind. It was pure, unadulterated filth and I loved it. I still have it but I don't really have a use for it currently.

my first pedal was a zoom gx1 4 modeling pedal. I wanted something that could kinda do it all while keeping decent tone. And yes I still use it today!
I use a boss bass overdrive that was modded for guitar tones. It was given to me as a gift 15 years ago from another guitarist and it’s my go to because it has a blend knob so it can have mix of clean and overdrive at the same time.
Great video. I have never tried that Boss pedal. I have a SD-1 on my pedal board that I use to boost an ISP Theta for leads. It tightens it all up. I have many Boss pedals. I love them all. I also use a Quilter Tone Block for my amp. Small reliable and insanely powerful setup. I can play into any cabinet from a 1x12 up to 2 4x12's. I have used the ISP for many years. If I were to try something else I would go for the BluGuitar Mercury or Iridium.
Hey Mike, picked up a DS-1 in the 90's for something heavier than a TS and loved it from the first chord even going through a super clean Roland Jazz Chorus and then when I got home and plugged into my Marshall it was Heaven! Unfortunately it was replaced with an OCD and sold but now seeing and hearing the Waza I've gotta get one!
It was way back in 1983/84 when I got my first pedal: It was the kit of the DS-1, that you had to build/solder yourself. What a friend did for untalented me. Unfortunately it got lost after a live gig we played. I loved it while playing my Höfner Solid Body 173 which works with pretty underwound pickups. I replaced the orange brick with a Korg OVD-1 and still play it today. A little later a Tube Screamer followed, which is also still in use. The Höfner suffered a water damage when our rehearsal room got flooded. I got a Squier Japan Strat as replacement for it. And still play it today. I could restore the Höfner just three years ago. I use it for practicing and to develop ideas. I guess, another DS-1 would really work well with it again ... Thx for the inspiring video!!

I feel like the Boss DS1 is the orange stomp box everybody needs to try once. Whether or not you keep it in your arsenal, is entirely up to you, and that's probably why it's everywhere. It can shape your whole voice or it can just enhance it. Not a lot of kit can do that.
I know pros who keep two of them on their pedal boards, because everybody seems to have (at least) two favorite settings that they can dial in with that pedal. Because it has such a dynamic range and EQ, this can be quite a big variety of voicings.
Having said that, this pedal never hit me right. The attack has always had a solid state feel to it that never felt right to me. I was drawn to the kind of sounds you get from tube distortions and valve harmonics. There are a lot of condescending guitars snobs out there who share that same opinion, so I'm kind of rolling my eyes saying so.
In my defense, I did start playing guitar in the '80s and back then everything was solid state, hairspray, and sharp attack, high gain distortion. 🤟
A couple of years ago somebody gave me one and I let it collect dust for too long. I then learned that it is a remarkably good way to cut a clear voice in a smaller hall, where you might get a little lost in the acoustics.
Years of looking down on this pedal and I now realize why it is everybody from bedrooms to ballrooms uses it. Even if it's only sparingly integrated into their kit, it has a place.
I highly suggest you looking to getting the boss EQ. If you think the DS1 has an alarming amount of variety and uniqueness, that little white pedal will blow your mind.

The Boss DS-1 is the past, present and future. It was the first distortion peddle I ever owned and I kept coming back to it after trying others. It does everything you need, no matter what you need. It just sounds perfect, no matter what guitar or amp you pair it with. Add to all that, you can throw Boss peddles against a wall and they still work. I'll never use anything else.

I like your natural excitement in talking tech! My first pedal was the first generation Ibanez "Super Metal" pedal. that was 1985. Now my setup is a pigtronix optical compressor (germanium, of course) and a clean channel Mesa-Boogie. It just works for me, yah?

I have a mxr super badass distortion pedal on my board.I went thru a lot of distortion pedals to find that sound in my head.Mxr put that sound that was in my head into their pedal
My first guitar pedal was a Boss DS-1. I used it to drive my Gorilla GG-10 into usable sound areas. When I got a better amp back in high school, I sold the pedal (I was stupid). Last time I talked to the guy who bought it, he still has it and still uses it.
A local Guitarist that was a frequent player at the restaurant/bar I was washing dishes at gifted me an old Ibanez TS-5 Sound Tank. I've had it for well over twenty years now.

Normally, I use a Rat or similar pedal but recently I've been using a Boss DA-2 Adaptive Distortion, DS-1 Distortion, and a DS-1X Distortion for recording. The DA-2 features Boss' Multi-dimensional Processing (MDP) technology which I thought was just more marketing malarky until I played it. The distortion is very different from other pedals I've used. The DS-1X uses the same MDP and makes a nice variation on the DA-2. The DS-1 borders on fuzz and has a rich spinning grind. All three play nice with single coils and humbuckers and maintain the tonal characteristics of each guitar.
no one ever forgets their first. i used my friend's proco rat once and immediately bought my own and i still use it as a solo boost to this day
1992 the Boss CH-1 stereo chorus...yes I still have it... I only have 2 pedals besides my Morley Volume pedal ...the CH-1 , and my DS-1 ...both great pedals
1st pedal was a Zoom 505. 2nd pedal was a Zoom 505 replacement for my 1st one (still have the replacement but doesn't work properly). 3rd pedal Boss DS-1 (still have). 4th pedal EHX little BIG muff (still have). 5th pedal TC Skysurfer Reverb (still have). 6th pedal EHX Holy Grail Max (still have).
With the DS-1 I love to set the gain on max, put the tone at 10-11 o' clock and find the volume settings that are equally as loud as the bypass signal
Good review. DS-1 is a cool pedal. I have a good collection of Keeley modded ones and an Analogman one. The custom channel is a good idea which sounds kind of like they did took some of the mods done by different boutique builders during the years and applied them. I haven't tried the Waza, but am interested. Typical modded DS-1s would change the clipping diodes to get a different break-up character and also sometimes change some capacitors to get more mids. Another similar good distortion pedal is the Ibanez Sonic Distortion. Also, in general, if you haven't tried the Nobels ODR1, it's very good as an overdrive (not a distortion pedal). I recently discovered that overdrive and think it sounds more amp-like than many drives.

I started playing guitar around ‘87 and I got my first pedal shortly after I got my first 15 watt Fender practice amp which was a Boss GE-7. I still have it in my practice rig though in my main rig I have a Behringer programmable 31 band stereo EQ and a parametric EQ on my multi effects unit.
While things like delay, chorus, reverb, flanger, phaser, distortion, overdrive etc. are very useful I still think a graphic EQ should be every guitarist first pedal.
I have a DS-1 with the Keeley seeing eye mod and a MT-2 and CE-2 also modded by Keeley (I don’t think Keeley does any pedal mods any longer). I want to get hold of the waza craft versions of those pedals to see how they compare to the modded ones I have.
Best chorus I have ever had was in the ADA MP-1, but the modded CE-2 is also phenomenal.
Delay is probably my favorite effect to use overall, though for obvious reasons it’s not on all the time and an EQ is always on…2 actually as I’m always running the graphic and parametric EQs. Again I would encourage every new guitar player to start with a small graphic EQ, there’s no glamor with EQ but it’s the most versatile pedal there is and you can learn so much more about tone and how to stand out just right in the mix with an EQ, things that you just can’t quite learn with any other pedal.
My first two pedals (since I got them at the same time) were a Boss OD-1X and DS-1 and I still use them to this day, my go-to is my OD-1X and that’s the main source of gain that I use on my pedalboard but I’ll use the DS-1 when I need something with a bit more crunch (I also remember a Guitar World issue I had went through a list of effects pedals and the songs that used those pedals with their exact setting, so my DS-1 still has the same “Smells Like Teen Spirit” setting I put it to
Sadly, I lost all my pedals, amp and electric guitar to a Cat5 typhoon here in our country.. took me 6-8 yrs to build my set and I was pretty happy with them.. I had a zoom 505, boss desto, reverb, and some others that I deliberately choose not to remember cos it hurt.. managed to salvage my acoustic guitar which floated on sea water during the typhoon.. had it restored by a local shop.. needless to say, it was a shit show.. they used furniture varnish for the top coat.. that was 9 yrs ago.. I just saved enough money to have my acoustic finally restored by a professional, its still in the works.. trying to save up to build and buy a new set.. but yeah.. this brings back memories.. thank you..
My favorite pedal would honesty be this TC electric Afterglow chorus pedal i use. This thing is subtle and really adds to the sound in a trippy way
1982 Big Box Rat. I still have it. Evidently it’s worth quite a bit. I should plug it in sometime. It’s been in a box for over 35 years.

I don't know if I just hit the right time for picking up the guitar again, but I am madly in Love with what Neural DSP is doing. Owning the Rabea and the Toneking 2 Plugin, I basically don't feel the need for additional pedals.
I couldn't crank an amp anyways in My Apartment, so I am very happy with the tone I get

I own the toneking plugin as well but I prefer a real amp for most stuff because I am used to the feel.

My first pedal was a DOD 680 analog delay that my dad wasn't using... I LOVED that pedal... I still have it, but it's had some issues over the years that I've had to get fixed, and so it's somewhat patched together haphazardly right now... one day, I'll go through and properly restore it.
I've settled on my gain go-to's being my green russian and demonfx tubescreamer clone. I can dial in a huge spectrum between those 2. From bright clean to heavy low end chug and everything in-between
My first pedal was a DOD Supra Distortion. I started playing in 1991 & DOD was the entry level pedal go-to. It sounded terrible. No idea what even happened to it but it’s long gone.
Nowadays I do a lot of stacking & gain staging with my drive pedals. My main drive for pushed clean & full on distortion is a Hudson Broadcast Dual. For a different flavor of OD or lead boost I use a Klon Centaur. And no I didn’t pay some ridiculous amount for it, I bought it from Bill Finnegan in 2007 when he was still making them. Paid $344, which I thought the pedal was well worth.
I also have a Danelectro Eisenhower octave fuzz & a slot that gets swapped out constantly. It can be anything from a Muff of some kind to a Keeley D&M Drive. I also have a Strymon Flint. The drive pedals & the Flint are in the effects loops of a Line 6 HX Effects which handles everything else. Wah, comp, chorus/mod, Whammy, volume, delay & reverb are all done by the HX, which has 2 Dunlop expression pedals connected. From there I go into the front of the amp, which is either a 1x12 Princeton Reverb, a Dr. Z Maz 18 NR or a Vox AC10. I have a few other amps but most of the time it’s the Princeton, which has a 12” Cannabis Rex in it.
First pedal was a big muff pi in the big green case. Sold that long ago, but I currently own the normal enclosure recent edition.
My first pedal was a Boss me-80 mutli effects unit, which hasn't let me down yet. But I hope to get into a more custom pedal board soon. Great video and great tones!
Manufactured pedal boards are expensive.
What I did was, found a slab of wood in the garage that looked the perfect size. It was 32" x 12" x 1" thick
Lined the top with sticky back velcro, and put a strip on the bottom of my pedals.
I have room for a Voodoo labs power pack, and 8 pedals. Actually, 6 pedals a cry baby wah and an old, very large, Peterson strobe tuner
I screwed a metal cabinet door handle onto the edge to carry it. Offset to balance the weight.
A couple large contractor hefty bags and a bungee cord protect it in the rain and snow.
They've held on through 15 years of slinging it around every weekend.
For all those that think the DS-1 isn’t a good dirt pedal. Please use it with an already dirty amp, back the drive, boost the level, fine tune the tone knob.
It’s a better more colorful boost/drive than most boutique drives.

My first pedal was a Wet Reverb and I still have it and I use it with everything from acoustic to electric guitar.

I'm a bass player and my first pedal was the Boss bass overdrive which was back in like 2004 maybe and it's still my main pedal I use. It has a low and high knob which helps keep my tone as thick as I want whole also getting the high end I need to cut through the mix. And the drive you can either dial back and make just a nice light crunch or you can get it really fuzzy and heavy. I used to add a tube screamer to my setup but for bass it can cause a drop in low end so I would put it before the overdrive so that I can use the tube screamer to get that extra boost and cut through the mix for certain parts of a song but the overdrive will keep the low end boosted.
Boss bass overdrive line is underrated.
That full and fat sustained tone without being fuzzy or fizzy sounded great with the Strat, and i would have mistaken it for an OD, not a distortion. How different is it than the standard DS1?
My only pedal is a Fender Mustang GT40... yeah, it's not a real pedal, but it does everything I need. Modelling amps FTW
My first distortion was a Danelectro Fab Tone. My friend said it was broken and if I could fix it, I could have it. I soldered the 9v jack which had broken loose from the circuit board. I still use it on all my songs today.

I got my first two pedals at the same time: standard Cry Baby wah and BOSS Digital Delay. Both very solid pedals to work with. Recently bought a 1987 Japanese DS-2 pedal from Reverb (big Frusciante & Cobain fan) and it’s quickly becoming my favorite pedal.
The DS-2 Turbo Distortion is too fuckin cool. I love mine. Easily my favorite pedal. I've got 3 layers of grit. DS-2, Tube Screamer clone, and a fuzz pedal. I rock hard 🤘🎸

Me being a Big Parliament/Funkadelic fan My first pedals were a Fender Fuzz/Wah and MXR Phase 90. But I actually got the Phase 90 after hearing Guitar Solo/Riff on Bohannon's The Groove Machine. I made a recording of it and took it to a local music store and they hooked me up. I may still have it somewhere.
My first pedal was a Digitech Bad Monkey that I still have and use to this day. It's great!

First pedal was a ProCo Turbo Rat. Second one was a chorus IIRC. Went to multieffects after that.
My first pedal? It was the ’80s, so it was a chorus. Favorite distortion? I really like the Boss DA-2, but-for me-nothing beats polyphonic distortion through my Boss GP-10 or Spicetone 6appeal. It always annoys me when people call a hexaphonic pickup a “MIDI pickup” because the real magic is when you use it for polyphonic distortion rather than to trigger synths.

Yes I do...lol Metal Zone MT-2, some people have rated this to be the worse pedal. but it seemed that it works best depending how it is connected. If i remember correctly, if you put it before the preamp it works great if you plug after it seems to not work good at all.
Atm my distortion pedal is the proco rat which had the tubescreamer going into it within the chain
i got my first pedal when i was 14-15ish , it was a boutique high gain distortion pedal, it was a Marshall amplifier from a dirt box that had tones for dayssssss
My first guitar pedal is a Dan Electro Chili Dog Octave pedal and I still have it. I sort of stopped using it when I got my second or third pedal which is a Boss PS-2 Pitch Shifter/Delay. I like its cleaner octave down and up sound plus the feedback on the pedal is a lot wilder than the Chili Dog.
Favorite distortion is a preamp by behringer,the tm300,emulates Marshall in both clean,hi or hot modes (among mesa mark 2 & fender bassman).

My first Pedal was a BOSS SD-1. I have an old distortion plus but never use it. My go to overdrive is the behringer ts 808. I bought my Son a Russian Fuzz pedal and now I want one.
I still have my first pedal, it's a Danelectro Pastrami overdrive pedal, for years I haven't used it because I thought it was awful, but it has its uses, now I only use it to play some Rory Gallagher and some Queen just as an EQ shaper with a light boost.
My first pedal was a EHX soul food. i got it because I thought it would work well at church, but I never ended up playing it there and didn't really get it on the whole. I got an OCD next and it was much more up my alley. Despite my consistent efforts to replace it, it usually ends up on my board again after a month or so. I've used it like at least 5 different ways over the years.
I got really into stacking at one point and wanted to try the soul food into the OCD, but the soul food didn't work when I plugged it in, so i pulled the LED for an LED clipping experiemnt I was doing at the time and eventually got rid of the rest of the board because it wasn't worth paying someone to figure out what was wrong with it.
I got an EHX tone tattoo. It’s amazing and I still have it.
I run the Riot Reloaded. Definitely a nice bodied distortion. I find the big issue with distortion pedals is a lot of the low end and body disappears.
I spent all my $100 I got for Christmas 1981 on a Boss DS-1. Yes it was that much. In fact I got it for $25 off. I don't remember what happened to it but I want to get another one. I'm going to get me the new Waza craft Edition as soon as they're back in stock. I'll never forget the time I took my guitar, amp, and this pedal to my buddy's house and hearing his mom ask "What is that little orange box that makes it sound ugly?" lol! Yup it's a classic alright. (My first pedal was an Electro Harmonix Big Muff Deluxe that I got from a friend some 42 years ago when I was 16 and just started playing.. It was fuzz and compression in one and it had the sweetest violin fuzz. Very collectable today. Another piece of gear i regret letting go.) Great video!
I love my fuzz..... so, my main fuzz/distortion of choice is usually my '75 Big Muff... but I do have a keely modded Ds-1 that has a Mid boost function much like your waza craft version has. It's another one of my favorite distortion pedals. It's useful in situations where I feel my big muff is too much and an overdrive pedal isn't enough. It can be very creamy when the amp is cranked a bit and you've dialed in those right settings. you can't go wrong with a DS-1.

When you turned the tone control up it not only added treble but it removed all the bass and mids!
