I include you in those doing their part in helping us get through this pandemic. While you might not be exposing yourself to the virus there at home when making these videos, the role you’ve taken on as cheerleader and emotional support companion (and I mean that in the kindest way possible) has provided an invaluable service. Thank you so much!
Stay safe and stay well!
Totally agree
..."exposing yourself"... (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) :P
Absolutely - I commend Lee for putting out all these videos and sharing his history with us, adding to our enjoyment of the songs and keeping the madness of what today's world seems to be at bay a little.
I just want to agree without taking away any of what you said. So I add it to your comment. rather than make a whole new one that says the same thing essentially..
What could be better than this song after a long day at work? Watching your fingers dancing makes me smile ❤
I saw Elton with Dee and Nigel back in 1970 or 71 in Reno play Burn Down the Mission. They were so incredible. Elton did his handstand thing at the end jam part of Burn Down the Mission. A concert I still remember with great fondness. I'm ith you on thre Covid 19 virus. I always wear my mask social distance and wash wash wash my hands. Stay safe.
Better than the original. I'm a fan of Phil and Elton but Phil's emotion in his voice make this so much better and the bass is amazing
Never knew Phil did that Elton/Bernie song. Elton's stuff early in his career was true greatness. Phil did a great job with this classic song.
It's on the Two Rooms tribute album it's great if you like Elton John's stuff
Great song from my favorite Elton album. Didn't know Phil covered this. Wonderful version.
To have seen this live would have been incredibly indelible.
My favorite Elton John song, bravo well done Phil and Lee!
Bless you Lee.....thanks for the love.....sending so much back to you. 😊 👋 🖖
Can't imagine a better voice for a great rendering of a great song. A joy.
Listen to Bobby kimball/toto version
Good morning 😅, stay safe and well Leland 🎉. Thank you 💕💕😗!!
What a great tribute to one of the best songs ever written. You did Elton and Bernie proud.
Always loved it when phil played on that yamaha cp70 what a sound wow
It brings me joy when you make people aware of the brilliance of 'forgotten' musicians like Dee Murray. Such an inventive bass player. Thank you.
Dee is not forgotten, legends seldom are.
This version is unbelievable!❤️🎶🎧
Tumbleweed Connection, probably my favourite Elton John album. Some great songs on that album. I remember buying it when it came out in the UK in 1970. Saw Elton, Nigel and Dee live around the same year.
incredible drum parts like always with his toms and gated reverb
legendary drum fills
Always love the sound of that Yamaha cp70 electric piano
This is how bass-heaven must sound...
for now, Dee’s representing, with Entwistle, Burton and Lynott, the rock bass, tho i tend to believe Jaco’s utterly exceptional voice is predominant, with Mingus and Ray Brown egging him on.
That "Two Rooms" tribute to Elton and Bernie was hit and miss for me. But I loved Phil's version of this, Clapton's version of "Border Song", Sinead O'Conner's version of "Sacrifice". A couple of the other covers were nice too and the whole thing was done with a lot of love, care and precision. And a LOT of talent. The great tracks are worth having, for sure. Glad you got to be apart of it, Lee. You did Herbie Flowers and Dee Murray a tribute your own self!
Saw Elton with Leon Russell a few years back in Ontario CA ...... The songs he went through that night ..... Unbelievable ..... Hit after hit, my youth being replayed with every song ..... Next to the first time seeing McCartney, probably my most memorable night .... Got tears in my eyes when I saw Davey Johnstone and Nigell on drums .... Always wanted to see the Elton John Band and that was pretty close ... He treated Leon with such great respect .... Quite a night for this 66 year old Wisconsin transplant
Oh that's why you are one of the most in demand session players of all time. I have never heard a better cover of that song BRAVO!!! to all of you thank you also thanks again for turning us on to such great music
Damn Booiiiii! That was some fine ear and eye candy! As always, thanx for being a bright spot. I also want to say thank you for remembering everyone who remained in their jobs to keep us healthy, safe, and secure. I'd like to add a couple of groups of dedicated folks, if I may.
Our park rangers are still working to protect our national and state parks, even though many of those parks are closed to the public. After all the damage that was done during the last government shut-down, their presence is essential. Also, a big shout-out to all of the E-911 telecommunicators. They are the FIRST first responders and hold a vital spot in the response process. I have pursued both of these careers in my long life and can tell you these are some special people.
And, please keep the Gulf Coast in your prayers. We are looking at TWO hurricanes headed our way, Laura and Marco, both scheduled to make landfall this coming week. Does anyone have twin hurricanes on your 2020 Bingo card?
Peace, all. Love you, Lee.
Favorite EJ song. Great rendition.
One of my favorite EJ tunes...nice rendition!
If a song is covered by both Toto and Phil Collins, that says enough about the composition. BDtM, my all time favorite Elton John song.
Magical! Are you kidding me? This is unbelievable! You're a master, Leland.
Thank you sir for allowing me to watch and listen to another fantastic performance by you! You have An amazing talent!
Great tune & playing Leland. Thanks for show casing real music.
you are the best tribute to Phil
we have waited for 2020 to have this
Absolutely love it when I hear more Phil that I hadn't listened to before.
Nice choice! I had forgotten that Phil covered this song. Everyone on the cover did an excellent job with it. Back when Elton was just starting establishing himself, this was the song that would be the barn-burner song at concerts.
Ok, so I haven't had the pleasure of seeing you play This close up. I've gone to many of the shows but now I feel like I was there! Beautiful.
Thank you for this and all your music. Hearing the bass lines on this song was a treat and your story of the recording of it was a gift.
Lee, I saw Dee Murray with Elton on the Madman Across The Water tour in ‘71. Just Elton, Dee and Nigel. Fantastic show! Dee played his Fender bass (jazz or precision, I don’t remember) through a Dual Showman. Killer bass sound! Sometimes Old School is the best school.
Thank you for turning me onto PC music videos. Love seeing you in them. Something happened on the way to heaven has a pretty funny ending. Bad dog !!
Playing lead on bass...I like that!!!
Hahahahaha Super Awesomeness......Thanks Again for the Magic
Thank you for what you do here on your channel. I appreciate it very much.
Lee: You are a true patriot, and may you soon be playing live, socially undistant, and unafraid.
Wow to that bass part! love your rendition
Thanks for the reminder of this track’s greatness Lee. And for the awesome homage to Dee Murray. Beautiful. 🌸 ✨
The one person who hit thumbs down probably clicked this instead of his Brittany Spears search results he wanted.
Thanks for the music Leland.
I thought I knew all of Phil's songs and wondered why I couldn't remember this one but now it makes sense. That's a pretty intricate and impressive bass part. Thanks Lee!
It was recorded for the tribute album to Elton John and Bernie Taupin. A lot of great covers on there.
Those lines are SO tasty, Lee. The beautiful song that pulses under a fantastic lyric.
Amazing! True Genius!
I swear I've seen so many of Lees Videos now - he's starting to feel like family. Started wondering what can get him for Christmas...
As the great Alan Freeman said, after playing Elton's original on the Saturday Rock Show, "And, er, let's rebuild the mission!". Love and best wishes to all those fighting the fires around Santa Cruz this weekend.
Very moving, thanks for sharing, Lee!💕
incredible bass lines ! i have this cd for decades
great drumming but quite simple too except some drum PHIL s/ ° AMAZING BREAK LIKE ALWAYS
I LIKE VERY MUCH TO SEE U PLAY ! a dream comes true
Phil is amazing, and "Fill" Sklar is at his absolute best on this song. A work of musical art, Lee!
#446👍LIKE. So glad you played this!!💖
Thank you! I had no idea Phil had covered this song. I am such a fan of Phil and Elton. So great to kind of hear them together on this cover.
Another proof that PHil Collins could appreciate special harmonic changes in rock and pop music.
Yes, but Phil did not write this song. Elton John did with Bernie Taupin writing lyrics.
@@nickavenoso7851 I know. What I mean is his choose to cover this Elton John song.
I wore out this song on this album. Great to hear you playing it.
Great choice from your vast bag of tricks. Don't get burnt down in LA.
Monterey and the Carmel Valley are all ablaze amongst many other places.
Friends of mine may lose their home to one of the lightning fires they have had up there.
Apparently there are more storms on the way in the next 36 hours.
Stay safe Mr S. We need you.
A UK fan in London.
It is so horrible. I have friends who have been evacuated there too! So scary!
Great to hear and see you playing the bass on Burn Down The Mission, your skill never ceases to amaze my. I think you enjoyed playing it too. I’m sure Dee Murray would have been very impressed to see you playing his part. As you say he was taken far too early in his life. I remember going to a concert in Preston in England with Elton, Dee, Davy and Nigel about the time of the Honky Chateau album in the early 1970s. I have the Two Rooms album, I’ll have to dig it out. Stay safe.
Fans from Milwaukee need a tribut concert to Phil Collins, with Nic on drums.
Daryl to play here as well. Smaller lakeside concert maybe?
Artistic freedom as to your lineup...
Thank you for honouring Dee Murray. He was the best.
Genial Lee....👌.....👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.....👉.................🎅
Bravo over Two Rooms
Seeing you play Dee Murray runs today on Burn Down The Mission made me smile and cry. Yup he was amazing. 🎶You hold it right up in that iconic spectre. I just love this arrangement - Phil IS a talented piano man too. (A old friend of mine was his first AR contact over here in LA. I heard him...when rock was young.) What a thrill to watch you two playing together. Thanks for all the neat stories. Keep them coming. ✌💝
Well, you pretty much covered the 'dusty-end' in that rendition. I loved the fact that Elton kept Dee and Nigel on in what I consider to be the best of his bands, with the addition of Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper, on many 'hayday' classics, following on. This Phil Collins version is 'not too bad' either...
Has that michael manring fretless bass sound that i love so much.
Dee Murray bas is great just take a listen to 11-17 70. A Tour I was lucky enough to see. 3 Piece band Elton, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsen. One great band.
I used that album as one of the records I learned to play bass from as a kid. Dee was an underrated force of nature, sang too!
Ditto. I saw the in San Diego. Incredible
That's Pretty Dang Cool....Gonna go check that Out Thanks
Great job! I’ve always loved Dee Murray. Be safe, friend.
Leland, it was great watching your performance on this and how your fingers just glide through the frets! And Phil did an amazing performance on this!! I remember when I first heard this on the radio as a teenager, and used some of my allowance money to go buy the album Tumbleweed Connection. I remember "Burn Down the Mission" being the last song on side 2. It was great to hear this!!!!
An all time great tune
I remember loving 11-17-70 when it came out. Especially this song. You all did a great cover of it and your Dingwall had smoke coming off it - great groove and some fun riffs to boot! Thank you!!
Really great work on one of my all time favorite songs, Lee!
I Love your music...Phil and You makes the best music on this planet! You are so good! Come to my country and I make a big concert for you! I live in Latvia. Its a shit country economicaly, but people here love music also:) I wish I had a beard like yourself, you look so GOOD like a MODEL! Help some homeless, but now there are just too many of them on this planet.
The bootleg, which I think is available on UA-cam. Elton John live at the Hammersmith Odeon, Christmas eve, 73 or 74. Elton, Dee, Davey, Nigel and Ray Cooper. Burn down the mission, Davey ripping out almighty power chords, Dee of course right in the pocket. That version also has the country chromatic roll bit on the "Bring your family down to the riverside" part. Only time I've heard that on the song. But really provides a barefooted country vibe to it. Still an incredible rock song. Worth checking out if you're able to. Inspired me massively as a young bass player back in the early 80's.
Super gorgeous 👏👏👏
Love Elton! Love Phil! This gave me chills ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hello Leland ! Tumbleweed Connection a great record !!! Love your bass part !!! Ciao from milano italy ! Stay safe , take care !
Love the chords in this song!! Some are so tricky to pick out! Like I thought for a while that the third chord in the intro was an F with C bass, but apparently it is a B flat with C bass! Really love the chords and key changes in this song and how he does the cool chromatic stuff with the bass notes. Thank you for the great feel and great playing as always!
That’s my new favourite!! WOW!
Brother Lee! Wonderful song. I got to see the Elton John trio at the San Diego Civic Theatre with Elton, Nigel Olsson, and the late Dee Murray on bass. I think that it was 1971 just before the release of Madman Across the Water. I don’t think that they performed this one. But what a beautiful concert and great evening of music. Have a great Saturday. Shabbat Shalom. God bless.
A late Shabbat Shalom back to you and a Mazel on your Tov. Best Wishes from London.
Inspiring; Ya might very well get many into the spirit of the way of bass guitar. Well done...
Lee, you always give me something to look forward to everyday. I’ve been in isolation and your talent has brought hope and happiness to everyone here. Thank you
Thank you.
Awesome version which I can’t say I’ve heard before.? Thank you for sharing with us x
I've always loved this song since I heard it on Eltons' live album.
I've never heard anyone cover this song. I think you did Dee Murray justice. :o)
Awesome job Lee!!! I hope you don't mind, but I would love for you to record a play along to "Wear My Hat" by Phil Collins!!
The technique in that faster part is interesting. At first, it almost looked like backwards plucking a string with the left hand on the upbeats. But no, that isn't right of me. I think you are unmuting; I just was not sure. Wonderful channel.
I love this song and I love Phil but didn’t know you guys covered it. This is KILLER.
Love your treatment. So cool.
Hi Leland!! I've never heard Phil do this song before!! Hope your having a good weekend! Your finger must be better..Ive
Me either
It was on the Two Rooms Elton John and Bernie Taupin Tribute album - it's an Elton John cover
love it. you've probably never heard this before, but damn you're good. :-)
rick baird Thanks so much. Gonna keep trying till I get it right.
A great homage to Dee Murray! Thank you for your comments Lee! Long nights by the record machine admiring his work on early Elton records ❤️!
I thank you for doing this, Lee. There’s always something new to learn. I’ve saved this track for practice. Wish me luck! Stay safe, and know how much your sharing is appreciated.
Groundhog Day indeed!
Thanks Lee!
To my ears this was some extremely fine Bass playing.
Have loved this version done by Phil for decades. Never knew Leland that the bass line was so intricate and musical. Love it!!! Thanks so much for all of your posts. So glad I found your channel. Amazing solid drums as ever.
Love that Bass ❤ wow , did you pick the color. I wonder, or was it just a fluke ? Peace love @ human kindness Kim-n-Carolina🌈
FORGOT HOW FANTASTIC THE Phil Collins band was!!!
Chops! Chops!Chops! Mr Sklar.....Wow! 😍
Hey Leland. Never heard this Phil tune before. What an awesome bassline man! Thanks for posting.
It is an Elton and Bernie Taupin song. Phil did it for a tribute album to them.
So fantastic. Thank you for doing this one from a huge Elton fan. Did you ever get an opportunity to meet Dee Murray? I hear he was an incredibly nice person, and certainly a great bass player. I have read his death made a huge impact on Elton and Nigel. Too many iconic musicians lost to cancer. Thank you again for your video posts and dialogue. It's such a generous gift.
