Regardless of the Japanese animation industry, Korean film directors are already successful if their movies are popular in Korea. The industry treats them differently. He was already a successful film director, even if he didn't make a squid game.

I agree actually and I'm a huge Succession fan. I will say "All The Bells Say" is a complete masterpiece and work of art but it should have won for cinematography (which the Emmys completely snubbed them for a nomination btw unbelievable). This however, captivated me directorial and definitely deserved the award.

This is very much deserved. Studied in the US for film school despite the language barrier, and went through struggles of trying to make his dream become a reality. I believe he said Squid Game took him a whopping 10 years? Because it was being dismissed for so long, until he did it! Very much deserved! I’m loving the diversity, the inclusivity. So proud of him, we’ll be waiting for Season 2! 🙏💗

While I absolutely adore other nominated series (e.g., succession, severance, Ozark) and I am Korean 😅, Hwang Dong Hyuk is well-deserved for this win, given the magnitude of the impact and sensation that Squid Game caused across the globe, and his role as a creator who helmed the entire process of making this phenomenal show, which he conceived and envisioned the story idea, wrote, and directed every single episode of the show
This makes me want to watch Squid Game all over again. As a very busy person, I normally don't watch hardly anything, and I barely managed to binge-watch this one. And boy, it was so good and so worth it!
You know it's a good series worth watching when your mom, who hates reading subtitles, watches it. I mean I was already watching it, but I was surprised when I found out she watches it as well.
This year’s Emmy gives me hope that genuine diversity/representation in the way Hollywood tells stories can happen. To see him accept this award in front of that audience was amazing. We’re not saying the stuff we’re used to seeing onscreen should go away, it just enriches us even more when everyone gets a seat at the table. I pray this is true progress and not a fad.

I have been always proud of South Korean culture where we try hard to get the bottom of everything, talk about the issues which may bring huge controversies, emphasise deep as about life. I believe when we talk freely about what we really think, have observed in life, even though they may not sound like sugar-coated words, that can be a starting point to move forward with growth that nation can benefit from. And it has been the core energy of South Korea’s success: don’t be afraid to talk about what is not right.
I'm proud of that director. He put a lot of blood sweat and tears into Squid Game and it showed in the final product. I also love how the Cast was there to support all the nominees and winners!
