Not the type of video I like to make but I have to share what I experience whether good....or not so good!!
****UPDATE**** Pivot is tight as possible! Will let KC mess with the springs if that's what he wants to do!
Another YTer had the lock fail on him after I think a month or so of use. Something the tanto guy.
Ok edc tanto guy is his channel
Just search max tanto fail
Mad
Crazy, I’ve been flipping mine a lot and haven’t had any issues, tried the weak flip multiple times and no problems. I’ll definitely keep checking for it.
That's very good to hear Terry!
thanks for the heads up👍 i love the look of that double function knife.
👍👍💯💯💯
I've had my Mad Tanto , coated black blade , "black" (grey) micarta , for a couple of months now . I carry it a couple of days a week, and flip it quite a bit in the evenings. It's exhibited no bad habits, other than the typical button lock bounce , fixed by tightening the pivot , and , picking up every bit of otherwise undetectable oils from my hands. It's tight , the action is practically infallible, even with a tight pivot , and it makes pretty great noises .I'm a fan.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Doug
Hey JB! Of course I grabbed mine and pretty freakin’ solid, and it has a strong detent. I’ve purposely TRIED to get it to get it to NOT lock up, and it always locks up solid! No rattling and no blade play in any direction. Maybe…. (It’s hopefully) just the one that was in the video you made. I do agree that if there’s ANY negative or unsafe things about “newer” knife models, that have come out, we should be informed about these issues. Thanks for the video bro!!! Cheers!!!
Very good to hear Johnny! Hopefully it's a one off issue!
Very interesting. I haven't seen any other reviews with this issue on the Mad Tanto, only a week detent for some peoples liking. Hopefully it's just a one off issue. Glad you put this video out there because this one was on my list to get at some point. I will have to keep an eye out for reviews with this issue.
Yeah....hoping it's an isolated isuue! Thank you Tim!
Only issue I had was button stick which I was able to fix and now it's super smooth. Has great and consistent lockup. Needs more jimping on the flipper tab though.
Yeah...this one had decent button stick from the start!
I had to retirn 2 qsp swordfish flr thw same reason and was about to buy this knife. I just happened to check your video and appreciate you saving me buying this and having the same problem
Right on!!
Good review JB , have a great day , thanks for sharing , God bless brother !
Thank you very much Michael!
The rattling of the tanto is what drives you mad. Aptly named!
LOL....Pretty sure it's a loose stop pin but it has bigger issues with the lock up!
Thanks for the video
My pleasure Kevin!
Appreciate the honest reviews! There can be times where we, you or i get a “lemon” knife. I’ve been lucky and have not had any issues with the knives i’ve purchased. Thank you JB appreciate it brother! On another note i do like the design and look of the micarta! ✌️
Oh yeah....it can happen! How the company responds is the key to me!
@@BigRedEDC very true. Hoping for a positive response.
Just checked mine. It locks up solid everytime. Stretching the spring just slightly will probably solve your lock up problem. The issue with the rattle, I had the same issue. It's the stop pin. Just wad up a little teflon tape and put it on each side of the stop pin and the rattle will go away. Also, make sure to clean oil off and then loctite the pivot screw as it comes loose on this model pretty easily. Hope this helps. Mine is now prefect, hope you get yours to 100% as well.
Pivot is tight...not an issue there! Too bad, that's a lot of corrective work on a brand new knife!
@@BigRedEDC It's not that much work. I normally take apart every knife I get to clean it in case there's any grit, grime, shavings, etc. from the manufacturing/ assembly process anyways. The only thing I had to do extra from my normal routine is ball up 2 little pieces of teflon tape and stick it to the micarta on both sides of the stop pin. Yes, I wish every knife was absolutely perfect from every manufacturer, but it happens from time to time.
All that being said, if anyone is looking for the perfect knife... the new Boker Mermaid Tactical variant they just released is the most perfect and most beautiful knife ever made 🤣
@@willw3298 So they cut the micarta holes a wee bit too big? Odd things. It sucks to get a knife with issues but sometimes the mad scientist in us enjoys fixing things like this too. The corrected knife will always be one you feel a little bit more drawn to because you fixed it. Maybe that is just me but the problem knives, especially action problem are fun. But when a knife costs as much as the Mad Tanto you buy it to be good out of the box not a tinker toy like a $30 no-namer.
I can't believe the mermaid is a real knife. I actually looked it up. It left me speechless. That model sure is......something😂
@@willw3298
Mine is treating me very well. 2nd favorite button lock I own, with the button lock only Elementum as the only better one
Right on! Glad to hear it!
I always carry one locking knife and one non-locking knife with me. But a knife that can't decide which it wants to be??? I don't think I'd carry that. 😆
LOL...for sure David!
Yah, I’ve got a couple button locks that are soft on the lock up like that and a few that lock up like vaults. The one that fail give me the heebee geebees about the rest. I like button locks for the fidget factor but don’t really trust them to carry and depend on. Thank for the warning.
Understand that for sure Charlie!
I don't have the Mad tanto but Ihad the same problem with my Kizer XL Begleiter Buttonlock. Folded close like a slipjoint while I was using it - luckily I didn't get cut !! I didn't want to work through the warranty process so tried to self-diagnose and fix it. The lock bar and interface was ground completely the wrong angle and looked like it had been done by hand. With any pressure the angles would cause the blade to disengage the lock bar / contact point. I managed to fix it and can now use it safely. Its a bit complicated to describe in words. (I reground the contact point to a more perpendicular angle so it doesn't cause the lock face to slide out. Not sure if that makes sense without pictures.)
I have 4 other Kizers, 2 CJRB's, 6 Civivis with buttonlocks - nil issues. I spine whacked and tested all after my mishap. My buddy with another Begleiter XL buttonlock - his was perfectly secure. His buttonlock engagement looked very different from mine though. I suspect this is an occasional QC issue.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
My black Mad Tanto does have a rattle but locks up very good. I think the problem is a loose stop pin. Rattle stops when I put a peace of wet chewing gum on the pin. Problem not a safety issue. I got a brand new Cormorant yesterday with the same problem. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have nothing to worry about I am left handed and this knife is not lefty friendly nice looking and I love kizer and Damed design thanks for sharing JB
Very true my friend!
@@BigRedEDC 👊🏻
I had a kizer original G10 that needed a bit of plastic wrap on the ends of the stop pin to shut it up.
Right on!
Always stinks when locks don't work right. Great video brother 👍
Definitely Jeremy!
Mine is pretty solid. I haven't had any of those issues. I just wished it had a thumb stud . But other than that, no issues. Good video, brother 👍😢
Very good Piper!
I don’t have a mad tanto, but I do own an assassin by Kizer and it had similar issues, it cut me once on the button not locking and loosened a few times after that. I was gonna buy a mad tanto, but now I’m really second guessing myself… well I know one that doesn’t have that issue and is a great knife…the Kizer drop bear… thanks Big Red!
Thanks for sharing your experience
Maybe pull the spring a little big red 💭. I have to say kizer sent me two buttons that fixed my problems and made the Xl befleighter a great detent , no out of this world detent for a bl knife . I almost got this so I dot truly know but was on lake Milton today and a few folks were out there catching them deep . Walleye and crappie 👍. It’s just nice to be by water imo .
Oh man!! Walleye and Crappie sound good
Hey JB i bet the spring is either squished down or too weak from the start. Im wondering if stretching the spring will stop the rattling and lock up. I hope you are doing great.
Hello my friend! Could be the issue! Hopefully it's a one off issue!
I like the variety of blades and designs that Kizer has been putting out lately. A little something for everyone! Man that rattle would be super annoying. Not sure what is going on there. I agree that I like Adrian and his designs. I have heard others have sluggish deployement as well on the Mad Tanto. I decided to pass on that one for now. Thanks JB
Man that rattle would be super annoying. Not sure what is going on there.
I really like the knife otherwise! Hopefully it's a one off!
I have the same rattle, but i have zero blade play and the lock doesn't fail under pressure. It does have a fairly weak detent, but nothing i cant live. The action is smooth and drop shutty even with the pivot tightened pretty aggressively. I have a kizer original with copper scales that had the same rattle. At first i thought that the rattle on my original was the lanyard pin, but since the mad tanto does it as well, i think it's the stop pin. Mine doesn't rattle when it's opened (so far) so I'm not too worried about it. It's such a great knife otherwise.
Thanks for sharing your experience Chris!
I have this knife and haven’t had any issues. The detent is weaker than I prefer but I like it overall.
Yeah...started with a weker detent and progressed for there.
Wow! That was not expected! I know you didn't expect it either. I know that that happens every once in a while.
Yeah...hopefully it's an isolated issue!
Hey JB. I think the springs being put in some of these button locks are too light so people can fidget with them easier and not get lock stick. I had made a video on a bunch of different brands that were failing the "whack" test way too easy. After I put thicker, stronger springs in them and stretched them some all my button locks that had issues did a lot better. Yes, the buttons may have to be pushed harder now but I feel safer with them. They are still fidgity. I've even got an idea for a duel spring upgrade I'm going to try to a couple. I'm going to use a smaller spring inside the fullsize spring to get more pressure on the button lock. It's kinda like a dual recoil spring on a pew pew guide rod used in small subcompacts. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the video.😊
Very possible Dwayne! Unfortunate when they sneak through but it happens! Hope it's more of a one off issue!
Hmm strange indeed. I had thought about the same thing, that a dual spring would be better. A weaker larger outer spring and a small inner with more pressure. Would have to work out the length so as not to cause binding but still able to hold the action firm. If you really wanted to go all out, could make it a captured micro dual spring setup.
Or, put something like an AR-15 extractor buffer on one end. Something to take up the slack in a stock unit and add a small amount of preload. *just thinking* I love this kind of stuff man!
@@RobNC-OG I had actually suggested that kind of idea to either kizer or vosteed awhile back when the whole button lock thing started with the raccoon 🦝 😊👍🔪 I fool around with ar-15s a bit. Building lowers mostly.
@@dwaynek.1293 They obviously didn't listen. I guess it would have costed them all 10 cents more per knife than they wanted to invest. Sad state of things ya know? I would hope one day they wake up and realize that putting out unsafe things will ultimately hurt their business reputation. One thing I've learned since diving into knives is that the knife community is tolerant to those companies who make things right. On the other hand, word gets around pretty fast within the community when companies don't fix problems. Yep, the same hands that feed the companies can feel bitten and put up the food for a while or worse yet- no more food at all. Even today in these modern times, "word of mouth" is still a very strong thing. Companies need to realize it.
I know you didn't want to make this video but thanks for pointing out issues.. Hopefully it's just a one off issue they can fix easily. Thanks for sharing!!
Yeah....it sucks but it's definitely an issue with this one!
I would like to know if this is pattern wide, or individual as well. I don't abuse folders, ( that is why I carry fixed outside of town) but weak lockup is potentially very dangerous. I don't have one of these, this makes me nervous about getting one. and I am very fond of Kizers that I do have.
Yeah....I think it's an isolated issue but gotta find out for sure!
Super strange. It locked up tight for me. I tried like you're doing in the video to press against the lock in my hands and it never failed. And I definitely never had that rattle. Weird. Maybe the pivot is loose but who knows? Thanks for the video. Oh, and it also had a bunch of button stick for me.
Yeah....it really progressed yesterday while I was carrying it!
It ended being Mad 😠 cause it was Damned from the start I guess 🤷 Thanks for always shooting it to us straight BigRed 👍
LOL...gotta tell it like I see it!
I like the looks but that lock-up would worry me too for sure!
Yes indeed Dider! Love the knive otherwise!!
I have the satin blade model. Mine has the rattle but none of the other problems you are showing. It's my opinion that it is the pivot bearings you are hearing. I did remove some crud from mine in the lockup area (closed position). Mine also DID work a little loose on pivot screw after repeated flips. The wiggle you're seeing could very well be due to pivot loosening. I'd tear it down and take a look. Could be a burr on the lockup area too or even a broken button lock spring. Would not hurt to open it up and have a look. If the spring is broken contact Kizer. If it is not broken stretch it a wee bit to increase tension. I really feel like your problem is due to crud build up from manufacturing.
Could very well be! I will let KC do what he feels is best!
I’ve have some knives rattle like that too. Check your stop pin. That stuff drives me crazy too.
I'm sure that's what it is
Wonder if some outside material is in the mechanism
Could be Rusty!
It would be nice if you do a follow up on what is wrong with the knife. I wouldn’t sound the alarm just yet until you know for sure if it’s just the knife you have.
Seems like its more of an isolated issue but gotta make it known!
That sucks I was going to get one of those really like it but I think I'm going to have to wait on this one
Hoping it's an isolated isuue!
Does it open unintentionally when you shake it?
I got this disappointing experience with my pyrite. It locks so solid, no blade play closed or open, but i can shake it open 🤦♂️
No....doesnt really shake open!
I don't have the Mad Tanto, I have the same rattle/problem with my Civivi Chevalier. One day its perfect then it loosens up starts rattling and will not lockup right. Taken it apart made sure the spring was seating correctly which it was cannot see the problem but it continues. Kinda turned me off of button locks.
Dont blame you!!!
Definitely sounds like something is wrong there! No experience with any Kizer button locks but they seemed to be pretty great. Sometimes a lemon comes through. Thanks for sharing brother!
Oh yeah...I think it's a one off issue!
I just got one myself, and yes, I have the EXACT same issue. It was flawless and then suddenly failed. Crunchy button, rattling, poor lockup, the same thing. I took it apart and noticed several things. 1- The spring is probably moving off center and pushing the button sideways whereupon 2- it catches on the very high tolerance metal sleeve it's supposed to slide through, and 3, the button just doesn't come back all the way, leading to the partial, loose lockup. I swear they just installed the wrong spring...
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Is it a black blade with the green scale handle ???! Cus i like the black blade version but all i see is with grey scales id like black blade with green micarta scale..
Yeah...pretty greyish
@@BigRedEDC did they even release new scale for them ?!?! Im hesitating between this and cold steel recon 1
@helllbig I would pick the Recon 1
Oh wow, you gotta give it a good solid opening, looks like one that should have been flagged for a replacement.
Probably an oddball.
Hoping it is Gman!
Get a hold of Kizer and see if you can get a replacement knife. 👍
If it were mine, I definitely would! We'll see if KC does!
I don't have a Mad Tanto but this would seem to be an issue that Kizer would be interested in knowing about. If I bought this knife I'd do a return for replacement and explain to them the observations.
I did share it with Kizer so we'll see!
Yikes, that's not ideal! Hopefully a one off. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah....I think it is! Trying to find out if that's the case!
Sounds like the spring broke... did you check it?
I will send it back it KC and he can do what he prefers.
@@BigRedEDC It is not unlike an Omega spring breaking, which actually happened once to me out of all of the Benchmade, Houge, etc. knives I have owned. It was hard fidget use knife I had taken apart a few times, so I was not surprised. I just wonder if a spring broke because the symptoms sound exactly like this when you consider the engineering and design of the plunge lock system inside the buttonlock. I am sure Kyser will replace it and see it as defective, but it would be helpful for them to possibly trace other issues to a supplier or lot of springs they purchased.
@@Robs_Nerdy_Knives right on! Thanks so much Rob!
So the mad tanto I have is good there's no rattle mine locks up great the only thing that is wrong with mine is the button stick mine has the worst button stick I've ever experienced but I like the knife enough that the button stick won't stop me from carrying it. It sucks your knife is like this hopefully it's just yours because I'm really hoping kizer will make other version's of the mad tanto really want to see a fat carbon version sorry about your experience with the knife ✌️
Yeah...I have heard about the button stick issues! This one is a little worse off!
Nice clean looking knife. But wonder if it’s just that one
Sounds like it is an isolated issue!
I was hoping to get one. Hope that is an isolated issue
Hope so!
That sucks that it rattles. It the detent is light, then I agree that it's probably something to do with the button. I like the design though.
Thanks brother!
Interesting, Wonder what other people are experiencing?
Sounding like its a one off issue!
I would yeet that thing! 😮☕️✌️
LOL...yeah! Too bad for a brand new knife!
Hopefully it’s just isolated to only a few. I’d share the video in the group, hopefully Kizer will remedy the issue quickly for you.
Hope it is as well!!
Kizer makes some good stuff. That rattle is suspect though.
Hopefully just the stop pin. It has kinda calmed down a bit but not great!
Well, shoot. That’s not good. Hopefully it’s not a widespread issue, or at least they can resolve it quickly if it is. It’s a really good looking design.
I think it's isolated nut worth mentioning!
Yeah, share it I'd say
Thanks Randy!
Too bad on the QC issue but I do like the blade profile quite a lot.
Love the knife otherwise!
Unfortunate situation for a good looking knife
Definitely is!
👍🏻
Mine has been awesome so far (month). I don’t flip like a p3ssy so never had that issue lol.
No wiggle. No issues with locking up. No rattle.
Sounds like you just have a defective knife that should be replaced…
Already got rid of it!
Never had a problem with any KIZER knives, did someone disassemble it for some stupid reason?
Nope....never been apart
It needs an autopsy!
Yes...I think it does!
No experience with this one. Hopefully it's just a one off. Nice design regardless though. Thanks for sharing.
Hope so Shamus! Thanks for taking a look!
zero issues with mine
Very good
It's a sweet looking knife, and tanto blades are always appealing looking. But I'm definitely done with button locks. I've only had one good one, a Pyrite (I've had two and one of them had a sticky button with an issue that would lock it up so that I couldn't even deploy it unless I pushed the button in). Button locks are inherently flawed when it comes to a consistently secure and trustworthy lockup. I'm done with sticky buttons and lock failure. Hopefully this fad will pass, otherwise it's easy to just avoid buying them. You have been lucky up until now, it's definitely not uncommon to experience these problems with BL's 😅Cheers JB! ✌
Yeah....cant blame you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
bummer still a good video jb
Thanks unclecow!
I hope Kizer gets these problems fixed because I love the design, but I won’t buy it if this is going on, Thanks JB!
Hopefully just an isolated issue!
Maybe it's just one bad one!
Hope so Mike!
Button plunge lock is just not a good design and solution for a folding knife lock.
Can be when done correctly
That Lock is 100% visible from the spine. So show the video of the spine as it fails to lock up. Mine is completely solid and I dont dont know how you wouldnt notice the issue by observing the lock as it fails.
If it fails...it fails!
@@BigRedEDC Is that what you do when your car overheats? Toss the whole car? Or do you troubleshoot and discover the water pump failed? Your response seems like you deliberately avoided showing what failed. ... iF iT fAiLS iT fAiLs
I hope it’s just a bad lock, as a Damned fan I hate to see this happen.
Yeah....me too Wes!
@@BigRedEDC it’s a Damned shame is what it is
@wesb123 lol...that it is!!
Nice looking knife too bad it’s falling apart so fast.
Sounds like it's a one off but does have issues!
Take that sucker apart, clean it and put it back together. Might possibly be something not seen or loose.
Could be!👍👍
I don't alter knives prior to review so you see it exactly as I do.
I don't own this model. If its an inherent and wide spread attention needs to be brought to it.
I'm thinking it's more isolated but trying to figure it out!
That is terrible, damned designs is probably my favorite budget knife but I don't like button locks!
Yeah...this one is just off!!
Got me convinced. Not buying it!!!
👍👍
👍👍👍👍
By the looks of it, it's pretty much just that knife and should be able to be fixed with a different spring? Have an awesome day, 🫵
Looks like it! too bad it made it through!
