@NythicalReacts you are so gonna love this show! But it wouldn't hurt to have a box of tissues handy, just in case. 😉 The first season was a mid-season replacement and shot on a lower budget - but even though some of the episodes might not have the best effects or plots, it is still a great season in my opinion. And then it gets even better... :)
It didn't even have the "to be continued" marker. It was essentially one long episode like the Firefly episode Serenity was supposed to be (where I was they only aired the first half of Serenity) or the first episode of White Collar. If they didn't have two separate titles I would say that they just WERE one episode.
Funny thing.. in Canada it wasn’t aired back to back and the next week they had a mix up and aired the first episode again. So we had to wait 3 weeks to get episode 2 😭
Welcome to the fandom, we are all crazy. Buffy isnt A chosen one, she ist THE chosen one. Into every generation, there is a chosen one. One girl in all the world. She alone will wield the strength and skill to stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness, to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers. She is the Slayer!
Welcome! Prepare to attract many more subscribers! Also, bonus points for being one of the few younger reactors who didn't look at the Master and call him Voldemort!😁
Welcome to The Buffyverse. Hope you enjoy the ride. To be fair it was a two part movie event when it first aired. I have always suspected that is why it feels so disjointed when 'the to be continued' pops up.
Welcome to the Buffyverse! I think you will really enjoy this journey. You seemed to like the first episode and it only gets better as it goes. Like with many shows, the first season is a bit rougher as the actors get used to the characters and develop them and the special effects are not as polished but it is still very entertaining. What is great about this show is the mixture of drama, horror, and humor. It is perfect.
The amount of heavy lifting this first episode does is amazing. It has a decent story, provides some worldbuilding and backstory, and introduces no less than 12 characters (only counting the ones who survive by the end of the episode). Head count: 1) Buffy; 2) Buffy's mom; 3) Giles; 4) Willow; 5) Xander; 6) Jesse; 7) Cordelia; 8) principal Flutie; 9) gorgeous/annoying guy from the alley; 10) Luke; 11) Darla; 12) the Master. We know the basics about their characters, we know how they interact with each other. It's pretty awesome.
The show is full of good twists. The first one, before the main character is even introduced? Priceless. At some point they wanted to change the title sequence to include Jesse. They didn't have money for that (they would need to pay Eric Balfour more if they made him a regular). The first season was made for scraps. Did you notice that the girl who found the body in her locker, the one who just before said “what kind of name is Buffy”, also was greeted as “hi, Afrodisia”? Xander was in the library stacks because Willow asked him earlier to check out some books on math. Nice continuity. AFAIK Charmed stole some plotlines from Buffy. Oh, and please remember a little bit of worldbuilding around 7:00 - how new vampires are made.
Welcome. Highly recommend you have someone moderate comments, people get very excited about reactors and can’t help themselves. We love the show that much. They don’t always realise they are doing it, Even just that they comment on things you speculate on or questions you ask, or something you spotted or a character you like or dislike. And it will give away future plot points. If this will upset you you’ll need someone to watch your back. Joss was very lucky, he had a cast that could act rings around anything he gave them. I hope you enjoy this as much as we all do. There’s a reason we come on this journey again and again with multiple people. I can’t make any comments because at this point everything would be a spoiler. Have fun!
Welcome! Buffy is one of the greatest shows of all time. Excellent reaction. I want to give you a great big thumbs up for the technical side of your review. I love that you said you pause the episode when you have something long to say. That is important with Buffy because so much is going on. Even more importantly, I love that you don't move the picture with the show all over the place. That is extremely annoying. I also love that the show is in the foreground and the review is in the background. A+ on your first review.
Hey, welcome to the Buffyverse! You'll love it! I don't know what you mean about feeling old. This show came out when I was a teenager, and I'm currently 18 =D
You are in for a ton of emotional highs and lows, I can tell you have a good sense of humor and there is a lot of humor in this show, something I didn't know when I first starting watching. I was quite happily surprised about that. Enjoy the ride, subscribed!
Olá de Portugal. This is very exciting. Buffy is my second favorite series next to Firefly. You have no idea what you are in for. I hope you enjoy the journey.
Yay! Another person discovers Buffy! Subscribed! You mentioned that you grew up on Charmed, which ran concurrently for most of time. At one point on Charmed, one of the Halliwell sisters says "I wish we could just call up Buffy" and another sister says "well this is real life, not a TV show" or something to that effect. They were even on the same network, so some fans had been hoping for a crossover episode.
I am also looking forward to more of your journey! This is gonna be fun! There are several moments of this show I am so excited to see your reaction to, but I will refrain from saying more because spoilers! I am also happy to hear you enjoy HIMYM!! Lilly is one of Alyson Hannigans most recognizable roles, but I did know her as Willow before she was Lilly!
If she is familiar with Lilly from HIMYM, then this should be a hoot for her to see Alyson playing a teenage high school student in Buffy! (although yes, Aly was actually 22 when they started filming BtVS as I recall)
You were supposed to think he was going to be the vampire. Also, being 3 in 1997 doesn't make you old - I was 46, THAT's old! I still quote lines from this show. Joss wrote the 1992 movie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but they made so many changes that he disassociated himself from it. The series takes up where the movie left off, that's where the "burning down the gym" reference comes from.
Hey loved the vid! I' so happy to see that you are dipping into buffy the vampire slayer. One of the best shows ever made! This series will make you laugh and cry. It is so fun to watch. I remember watching this in 97, I was 15. I still have all my seasons of buffy and angel. My favorite part of this episode is, when buffy is talking to Giles in the Bronze, about the vamp that is dress in the 80's style. Made me laugh. I'm glad you enjoyed the first episode. I was also happy to here that you are a Firefly fan as well. So am I, love it and I give you a like and subscribe because of your content. So I will be more than happy to keep watch you!
The duties of the Watcher were established in the movie that the TV show was based on. While quite different from the show., the movie followed Buffy's journey upon finding out about her calling.
YES!!!!! Omg I'm SO excited for this journey!!! It's my second fave show (first being Firefly) of all time! I know you briefly touched on this but what are the changes of you doing multiple episodes per reaction. I alot of the people I follow who watch Buffy bundle them up for 2-3 episodes per reaction. I really like those. Either way I'm here for it all :) Be prepared for SO much teen angst hahaha
Buffy was originally a movie. Different from the series, more of a comedy. Somewhere on UA-cam is the unaired pilot of the series, has a different Willow. 3 when this came out I was 24.
I remember seeing the movie first and loving how campy and tongue-in-cheek it was. I was very excited when i heard there was a series coming, and was actually a little disappointed at first when I started watching because it dropped the campy approach and made it "real". But I was very quickly hooked on the new show after a few episodes. For most people at the time, the name "Buffy" immediately painted a mental picture of a stereotypical country-club, air-head, entitled, rich, valley-girl character, which is closer to how the Buffy in the movie was written. When the series came out, the Buffy character was written to be more of an opposite reflection of the stereotype conjured up by the name, and now, because the show has earned a place as a foundational pop-culture series, the name Buffy more often calls to mind the strong, badass character Whedon gave us.
@@kevensimmons654 Yes! That is one of the things I liked about the original movie, we could see Joss Whedon's original story concept: The comedy derived from the fact that "the chosen one" would be the one person on Earth *least* likely to actually save us. A ditzy airhead. Then the execs started dumbing down the story and he had to walk off the set. The TV series does manage to capture this a few times, but she is already an experienced powerful hero by the time of S1 E1.
@@kevensimmons654 Amazing that Whedon's TV series was so influential that it has taken over the name "Buffy" now. At the peak of its popularity there were feminist analysis books, college classes, PhDs, papers and an academic journal, "Slayer studies" about the character.
I read down a bit but didn't see anyone mention it but keep in mind that this was a mid-season replacement (that's why the first season only has 12 episodes). It starts a bit shaky and the budget wasn't huge but it gets much better from the second season on.
Buffy is one my favorite shows, and it has what is, in my opinion, the greatest episode of television ever aired. A masterpiece that is studied for it's writing, cinematography, and sound design. Prepare for a fantastic journey
A few years ago no one was reacting to this show, now it's so popular! I don't know why it's blown up again, but I'm glad it has. Hope you enjoy the show! It's a fun, campy, thrilling, emotional ride.
I'm excited to share your journey. I think the show does a good job of obviously using "Demons" as an allegory for real life issues, it doesn't beat you over the head with it. BTVS was somewhat of a pioneer of bringing taboo subject matter into mainstream TV
Welcome to the Hellmouth. Season 1 has shortcomings, but it also has the show's signature strengths like witty dialogue, endearing characters and the underlying lore of the Slayer. Even the more forgettable eps(and really there's a mere handful across the entire series) generally move characters and relationships forward or have fan favorite set pieces and ongoing situations that can turn on a dime. There's a reason it's so popular and beloved after a quarter of a century.
Nice to see you starting this. The Buffyverse has been a big part of my life for a long time, and it's really something special. It does take some time to properly find its identity, but when it does... god damn. If I could give some unsolicited advice, you might want to have a few dedicated mods policing comments on Buffy videos before you read them (if you don't already). Buffy fans are awesome, but SOME of them kinda have no chill when it comes to indirect spoilers. Stuff like "Don't worry, you're going to LOVE [this character] by season 3!" They're well meaning, they just can't help themselves.
Welcome to Sunnydale! I've been so hype since you said you were going to start this in 2025. If you find yourself enjoying the rough and underbudget season 1 then you can be guaranteed this is going to be one of your favorite shows of all time by the end. Just do whatever you can to avoid spoilers. This show makes some crazy twists and turns and it's still great even if you know every beat, but if you manage to avoid spoilers some of the surprises that pop up are really, really fun and hit really hard.
@@NythicalReacts Buffy fandom on UA-cam is pretty good at upvoting someone who says "SPOILERS BELOW/BEWARE SPOILERS" or some such in your comments. If you delay a little bit at reading comments after you post, so look for highly upvoted comments and read those first and they'll let you know when someone spoils something. It's usually not intentional either, just someone excited that's known the series inside and out for 20 years and forgets that you don't know something yet. Came for the Firefly, will stay for the Buffyverse! Oh and I'm sure its been mentioned dozens of times but you should throw in Dr. Horrible any time you need a quick boost. It would make a great reaction when you want to mix it up some day with something funny!
The principal saying it is a fresh start and tearing up the transcript was great. It was sort of like the show distancing itself from the film. But then he taped the paper back together, because there are some things that carry over from the film to the show (the slayer dreams, for instance).
Welcome to the Buffyverse! Here come the subs! If you really want old- I was 19 when this show premiered. Watched every episode on its original airdate except for one in season 3 called "Doppelgangland" that aired the night I had appendicitis (it was obviously a memorable experience). The show only gets better from here, so if you're enjoying it now, just wait.
There are some tropes that you will see coming, but thats because of how unbelievably influential Buffy was. A lot of stuff thats just normal now was created by Buffy. Also season 1 had basically zero budget, season 2 is much better.
Hi Nythical. I really enjoyed your reactions to Firefly/Serenity and even commented a few different times which is more than I do on most channels. You have great charisma (no pun intended) and keen observation skills. I think the Buffy fans here will really appreciate you! @@kevinstanton5998 whelp, if she didn't know there was a spinoff, she does now... Oh, I thought of a question for you, Nythical. At this very early stage, how similar does Buffy feel to Firefly? On the surface, they are completely different, but they have a number of things in common. One reason why Firefly was so good was because Joss Whedon had had Buffy as his "training ground".
The show that really did set the precedent for ones like charmed and supernatural. Absolutely timeless and phenomenal with most jokes/humor still relevant. Teens haven't changed all that much. I was 16 when this show started. Live it just as much now as I did than. Still made about the angel split tho.
Old? I was older when it came out than you are now. Remember there was a movie in 1992 which was her first year of high school. They will make references to it in this TV series and you don't actually need to watch it. For me, it has one of the funniest death scenes. I believe you can thank this TV series and The Night Stalker TV series and movies for The Supernatural TV series.
This show and Buffy herself mature so much throughout the series. From quite cheese show in season one, becomes serious drama, that touches life sometimes too close.
As a Supernatural fan, I think you might appreciate a little bit of crossover in Buffy with actors who have been in one or more episodes of Supernatural, like Charisma Carpenter, who plays Cordelia! I hope you enjoy this Buffy journey!
this show got me crushing so hard on Julie Benz (Darla) for some reason i think your going to dig Cordelia ( Charisma Carpenter) i guess ill see. cause of your reactions to firefly looks like im rollin witch ya

I have many favorite episodes but Season 6 Episode 17 is my all time favorite(folks might disagree, like that episode really) I just love the idea of the episode. Hope you had a great New Years(little late Sorry), I had a good one, but now not so much, lost a family member, so dealing with that. You'll notice some things where you go: "Oh , this is like that story on Charmed" or " ...on Supernatural" or on many later shows. That's because Buffy paved the way for many supernatural shows and they often took inspiration from it.
I love that!!! Thanks so much for being here 💜
Ah - Buffy. One of the best shows ever made.
Welcome to possibly the greatest TV show ever made. Enjoy!
And guys, lets not add spoilers here. Let her discover this show the same way we did.
Thankfully i feel the community here so far has been pretty good when it comes to me watching older shows!
@@NythicalReactsBuffy fans can get overenthusiatic in the comments. You might want to give a polite "no spoilers" reminder every episode and get a mod if you don't have one. This is one show you _do not_ want spoiled.
@@NythicalReacts there will new people (like me) who are frankly idiots (me also but in a different way) and will spoil. just get a mod to delete comments before you look
Oh, hush now, the body of the members here enjoy our conversations with dead people. We're gonna be flooded with comments, and given the gift of a new Buffy fan. I'm waiting for that new moon rising, and I'm restless to go where the wild things are, so say that you're happy now...
"Are you serious? That's where it ends?!?"
When broadcast the 1st and 2nd episodes were aired back to back in adjacent time slots. 🤣
I’m gonna watch another one tomorrow 😂
@NythicalReacts you are so gonna love this show! But it wouldn't hurt to have a box of tissues handy, just in case. 😉
The first season was a mid-season replacement and shot on a lower budget - but even though some of the episodes might not have the best effects or plots, it is still a great season in my opinion.
Yeah the first 2 episodes are essentially a double-length pilot that can be treated as a single long episode.
LMAOOOOOO 😂
She's 31, she only *looks* 20.
Oh look, one of my favourite reactors watching my favourite TV show-enjoy this exemplary epic journey…
Thanks so much 🥰
Ditto!
The best show ever! Welcome!
I have been a fan of this show for 27 years. I love watching first time reactions to this series, will definitely subscribe to see what you think :-)
Welcome to The Buffyverse. Hope you enjoy the ride.
To be fair it was a two part movie event when it first aired. I have always suspected that is why it feels so disjointed when 'the to be continued' pops up.
I am watching the next part tomorrow, I can't wait a full week!
Buffy reactions get subbed. I was the same age as Buffy when the show came out, show has got me through some tough time, hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for subscribing! I’m so glad that this show was there for you during that 💜
Subscribed! They aired both parts on the same night for the premiere. They weren't going to make people wait a whole week for the big series intro.
I’m already excited to see more!!
yyyaaaayyyyy.....Nythical on a new series and venturing more in the Joss Whedon rabbit hole
I’m hooked already 😂
Couldn't believe when saw you started Buffy. You are here for a ride! Enjoy
The amount of heavy lifting this first episode does is amazing. It has a decent story, provides some worldbuilding and backstory, and introduces no less than 12 characters (only counting the ones who survive by the end of the episode). Head count:
1) Buffy; 2) Buffy's mom; 3) Giles;
4) Willow; 5) Xander; 6) Jesse;
7) Cordelia; 8) principal Flutie; 9) gorgeous/annoying guy from the alley;
10) Luke; 11) Darla; 12) the Master.
We know the basics about their characters, we know how they interact with each other. It's pretty awesome.
I totally agree, they did a great job of not only introducing the plot but also many characters without it being overwhelming!
*YEEEEEEEEEES!*
Welcome to the Hellmouth, my friend! 😈
Thank you!!
0:40 OK, yep, feel old now lol
LOL 😂
Glad you're finally covering this show It's quite the journey and only gets better. Enjoy
I cannot wait to dive in even more!
I'm SO HAPPY to watch Buffy with you.
YAY 🥰
Have fun!
You have a wonderful journey ahead of you. Buffy was my jam when I was a teenager!
One of the best shows ever.
The first season is the most "rough," but it has some very solid story/plot/worldbuilding bones underneath.
Welcome to the Buffyverse. It's going to be an amazing ride...
I think so too!
More Buffy reactions? Bring 'em on!
🫡😊
Hey, welcome to the Buffyverse! You'll love it!
I don't know what you mean about feeling old. This show came out when I was a teenager, and I'm currently 18 =D
**does math** 🤔
Me too!
All the way seated.. you'll need a crow-bar and the jaws of life to get me out the chair.
Hahahaah 😂
A new Buffy reactor! New sub and I look forward to watching this with you!
yay! thanks so much, happy to have ya!
Ahhh thanks! I’m excited 😊
Buffy automatically comes with a subscribe 😂 can't wait for you to join the experience.
Thank you!! Excited to be here 🥰
OMG BUFFY. this is like a core memory of shows from my childhood.
I’m here for it 😎
Yes, welcome to the club!
Thanks!!
Oh man, this is gonna be great. So excited!!
I know exactly what line you’re talking about!!
This show is very funny, but it also has its serious moments, that's why it's so good
I am also looking forward to more of your journey!
Omg I’m so excited to see her in this show!!!
Thanks so much! 💜
Great reaction! Just subbed to watch Buffy with you.
Thank you!! 💜
There may be times i put them together!! I’m gonna just go with the flow
@@NythicalReacts I support the bundling too
Buffy was originally a movie. Different from the series, more of a comedy. Somewhere on UA-cam is the unaired pilot of the series, has a different Willow.
3 when this came out I was 24.
Neither of which you need to watch
Some times people say that the budget for Buffy in season one was "whatever Joss had in his pocket that day". I like that joke.
Yay, a new reactor. A lot of the others finished, or are close. Always fun to watch new ppl get hooked.
Yo this is an incredible show. You'll love it.
I cannot wait!!
Buffy is one my favorite shows, and it has what is, in my opinion, the greatest episode of television ever aired. A masterpiece that is studied for it's writing, cinematography, and sound design.
Prepare for a fantastic journey
Welcome to Sunnydale! I think you will enjoy your stay!
Thanks so much!
A few years ago no one was reacting to this show, now it's so popular! I don't know why it's blown up again, but I'm glad it has. Hope you enjoy the show! It's a fun, campy, thrilling, emotional ride.
Followed you here from Firefly! I first started watching BtVS S2E16 & I fell in love with it almost immediately. Enjoy!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
YAY!! Thanks so much for being apart of another journey with me!
I'm excited to share your journey. I think the show does a good job of obviously using "Demons" as an allegory for real life issues, it doesn't beat you over the head with it. BTVS was somewhat of a pioneer of bringing taboo subject matter into mainstream TV
I’m excited too!!
A super hero story that does not start with an origin story is so refreshing.
My favorite show of all time.
Just subscribed.
Welcome to the Buffyverse family. Can't wait to see you go on this fantastic journey.
welcome to sunnydale!! 🥰
Thank you!!
There's a reason it's so popular and beloved after a quarter of a century.
you will love it!
You have an infectious laugh.
This is so nice 🥹
So excited for this!
Great reaction! If its Buffy, I'm subbed. Welcome to the fang club!
Thanks so much! Omg fang club that’s so cute
I’m already loving it!! I’m on the search for some mods for that reason now, thanks!
I’m pretty good at dodging spoilers I’ll try my best!!
It's a single short musical with Mal (Nathan Fillion) and Neil Patrick Harris as the leads and is also written/directed by Joss. It would make a great reaction when you want to mix it up some day with something funny!
I like how even though buddy says she’s retired, she still carries her stake to be able to kill vampires and to save people.
The principal saying it is a fresh start and tearing up the transcript was great. It was sort of like the show distancing itself from the film.
But then he taped the paper back together, because there are some things that carry over from the film to the show (the slayer dreams, for instance).
My favourite show of all time! 😍
Here for the ride. Screen name is buffyverse related. No spoilers though!
definitely recommend watching 2 episodes at a time! its such a good ride and season 2 just gets better!
There are some tropes that you will see coming, but thats because of how unbelievably influential Buffy was. A lot of stuff thats just normal now was created by Buffy. Also season 1 had basically zero budget, season 2 is much better.
Welcome to Buffy! It’s going to be wild.
Yay! Thanks 😊
Grew up watching Charmed, finished Supernatural and now you’re watching Buffy. Yep I’m subbing. 👍🏾👍🏾
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi Nythical. I really enjoyed your reactions to Firefly/Serenity and even commented a few different times which is more than I do on most channels. You have great charisma (no pun intended) and keen observation skills. I think the Buffy fans here will really appreciate you! As for me, I never actually finished BtVS (I got distracted by life in my first atempt) so I'm excited to watch along with you for the first time!
Awww thanks so much!! These types of comments are so so nice! 💜 oooh this is gonna be fun, thanks for joining me!
sometimes you just have to seize the moment... and watch "Buffy"!
Subscribed last year when I caught you watching Firefly! So happy to see your reaction to Buffy now!
YAY! So excited to have ya with me for another journey!! Thankfully this one’s longer 😂
Subscribed for more Buffy! I love watching new people discover this epic ride ❤
Yay!! Thanks so much 💜
Woohoo! Slay!
The get betterand is fantastic!!!
Make sure to watch the angel spinoff as well
Will do!
@@kevinstanton5998 whelp, if she didn't know there was a spinoff, she does now... Many new reactors do already know there's a spinoff, but in general, mentioning specific stuff about future developments might not be the best idea.
Nythical, the Buffy fandom is full of very enthusiastic people, some of whom cannot resist hinting at future characters, plot developments, etc. So spoilers can happen. 🤷♂️
Welcome Nythical! You're gonna love this journey. Great job on the reaction. 🫶 Subbed!
Thanks so much!!
Oh, I thought of a question for you, Nythical.
At this very early stage, how similar does Buffy feel to Firefly?
On the surface, they are completely different, but they have a number of things in common.
One reason why Firefly was so good was because Joss Whedon had had Buffy as his "training ground".
The characters interacting with each other reminds me lots of firefly!
Omg this is soo going to be a journey, the buffyverse was life changing wish u the best !! New follow btw !!❤
So excited!! Thank you!
This is exciting to watch a reaction to something I haven't seen yet.
The show that really did set the precedent for ones like charmed and supernatural. Absolutely timeless and phenomenal with most jokes/humor still relevant. Teens haven't changed all that much. I was 16 when this show started. Live it just as much now as I did than. Still made about the angel split tho.
Henlo Buffy people!
Oh totally this show definitely set the way for supernatural!
This show and Buffy herself mature so much throughout the series. From quite cheese show in season one, becomes serious drama, that touches life sometimes too close.
Hahaha i love the first seasons of shows they’re almost always a lil cheesy
Once youre in the buffyverse you cant leave 😂.
As a Supernatural fan, I think you might appreciate a little bit of crossover in Buffy with actors who have been in one or more episodes of Supernatural, like Charisma Carpenter, who plays Cordelia! I hope you enjoy this Buffy journey!
Love how quickly you fell in love with it hahaha
The second episode made the love even stronger hahahah
this show got me crushing so hard on Julie Benz (Darla)
for some reason i think your going to dig Cordelia ( Charisma Carpenter) i guess ill see. cause of your reactions to firefly looks like im rollin witch ya
New subscriber ❤
The seasons you watch, the better it gets
The show gets better and better.
Hey girl! Gen B here👍
I just want to welcome you (in advance) to this weird, wild, crazy and amazing family💜
Enjoy the most wonderful, twisted, life changing ride and try not to get the wiggins🎶
All in it's own time and place😉🙃
Thank you so so much!
Enjoy the Buffy Journey, I will say nothing to spoil it,1997 great year for this show, for me not so much(lost my Pops that year), plus Sarah aka Buffy is a few months older than me. My favorites Willow and Anya and Spike.
I have many favorite episodes but Season 6 Episode 17 is my all time favorite(folks might disagree, like that episode really) I just love the idea of the episode. Hope you had a great New Years(little late Sorry), I had a good one, but now not so much, lost a family member, so dealing with that. Forgot another Character I love, Drusilla, some hate her, some love her, me I love her. Hopefully you dig Dru.
people have mentioned that the HD remastered version is absolutely unwatchable. Hulu does use the original right now but I always recommend getting the DVDs (really cheap at used book stores or ebay) because then you get extras and commentary
I'm excited to see you go through the buffyverse have fun with the buffy the vampire slayer series there 7 seasons
