Why would HBO bring back Velma, which had a tepid reception at best, but cancel Gentle Jack, which had rave reviews and a rabid fan base? Makes no sense whatsoever.
Gentleman Jack was probably pretty expensive to make, whearas animation is usually quite cheap to make, so it wouldn't cost them that much to do an other season of Velma and they can still make a good profit from all the hate watch.
HBO probably had the numbers we don’t know. A lot of people hate watched Velma, the same reason Emily in Paris got so far on Netflix.
It does. Hate watch is still an audience. Like Arrested Development, it was well received but barely lasted 3 seasons. But the very few fans were die hard fans.
Honestly, I think it was just because HBO ordered 20 episodes of the show in their original order. Season one was just half the episodes. No real reason for them not to go ahead and drop the season two as well. I doubt we see more though.

FYI on the Rebel memoir UK publication - the defamation laws in the UK are much more protective of the person being accused than they are in the US. Effectively the burden is on the accuser to prove their statement is true in the UK. Memoirs are regularly edited before UK publication for this reason. :)
