Of course, they'd done a little surgery on it first, given it a little gift. In that story the species only had one queen, the mother of the entire race, whom that sole survivor was called to report to, and she and all her eggs and larva were killed then the nuke the humans had put inside him detonated. After that there was nothing to salvage of their species. They had no way to recover, no alternate queens or young princesses elsewhere. So like an ant colony that loses it's queen with no replacement, or a bee or wasp that ends up too far from it's hive to return, they simply died. Oh, and by the way- that line towards the end nearly made me cry. (I'm a Daddy's girl, so anything about a father losing his beloved daughter hits me hard.) Good writing, kudos to the author. I liked the bit about that slow poison- I had wondered if that kind of twist was coming, but until the Thraxian swayed and seemed confused about it I wasn't sure. It reminds me of how Mossad hunted down the any remaining guards from death camps, and the terrorists who did that one attack that killed an Olympic athlete team. They killed the kids. I don't even need to listen to know what comes next. This is was an old episode of Outer Limits except the human children were killed.
This was about 4 out of 10. Simply what held it back is humans were too advanced for any of these things to happen in the first place. They were smart enough to make dark holes but not smart enough to have an early warning system when an unknown sip enters their planet. Not even talking about how the military whatever it was was so easily invaded and the children were not smart enough to not realize how weird this was.

This was about 4 out of 10. Simply what held it back is humans were too advanced for any of these things to happen in the first place. They were smart enough to make dark holes but not smart enough to have an early warning system when an unknown sip enters their planet. Not even talking about how the military whatever it was was so easily invaded and the children were not smart enough to not realize how weird this was.

I mean they probably should have scanned It was honestly their fault If they haven't been so prideful and hadn't attacked the woman the girl they probably would have survived if they had actually checked the aggression index and saw that it was labeled as unknown they would have realized Wait a minute either they've never been in a fight or everybody they fought died and nobody knows what they can actually do those should have been the two options because you attack a human child You got the whole of humanity angry at least the whole of humanity here on earth Do you broadcast that child dying constantly and you make fun of it laugh at it Oh boy nobody saving you then Even if they didn't insult in enslave or turn every other species they found in the meat and they did have allies who like them Who was going to stop us cuz clearly in this story humanity was pissed nobody would have stopped us except their internal destruction

Anyone else hate stories like this? Like “humans are the best just because” isn’t an interesting story.
I get that it’s HFY, but there are ways to incorporate what makes us human in these stories instead of just making us the strongest for no reason
That's why most of them explain there was a mercenary one I saw where the leader had to put shock collars on the humans cos of our ability fight almost endlessly without thinking so they had shock us to calm down or one where deleted a star with our weapons
Yeah, I agree. HFY tends to fall into one of three groups:
Don't make Humans mad because we're really monsters, grr, arg.
Humans think in ways and developed things that the galaxy isn't ready for, like AIs or weaponized jump gates or nanite mass manufacturing - Humans take things to extremes
Humans are just weird - we can drink POISON and survive temperatures where our BLOOD SHOULD FREEZE and take MASSIVE IMPACTS and just HEAL and our immune system is BONKERS and ADRENALINE IS SUCH A DRUG and OMG LOOK AT THEM RUN HOW ARE THEY SO FAST and What Do You Mean Your Brain Resets Because You Walked Through A Door?
