It's amazing how this suddenly stops sounding like a drum solo, and starts being a complete song with full structure in benny's style, basically an example of what to think when playing a drum solo, so cool!

I would like to share an idea I had: to take a short solo and to do 2 or 3 different "takes" of arrangement on it. 3 different songs on the same solo.

Yeah I've been thinking about doing that as well. I think it's a great idea, and should hopefully turn out well once I find the perfect solo for it :)

Probably not the fastest hands or 64th note triplets on the bass drum but Benny greb is one of the most creative drummers on planet Earth listen to how many different sounds he makes with hoops and drum shells and his elbow I mean it's crazy just crazy

Yeah some have seen them, some I wasn't able to get in touch with. I believe Benny has seen this, as I went through Meinl to get the video. I've been told that Meinl would like to share this on their Facebook pages soon. Which is exiting! :)

Yeah, he does that gradual slow down / speed up snare thing. What's cool about Benny's version is he keeps his kick and hi-hat in time with the groove while the snare is doing the whiplash thing.

He used to be my favorite. Now all of his solos sound the same and he does the same tricks like the slow down and speed up thing, and he hits the last shell with the off swing rhythm. I'm looking for something new

Great stuff, I find drum solo more appealing when there's a little bit of music to accompany/ pair with it. It becomes like a "drum centric" part. You did a great job of complementing that drum solo.

Hey Alastair, great Song and a great Solo choice I watched this twice wondering how Benny could fit so tight on the audio without click/earplugs until I realized your wizardry. But I have a technical question:
I wonder how much you needed to adjust the tempo of your track to fit Benny's playing, especially in the part with the changing Snare Tempo starting at 4:57.

With this video, in particular, the tempo was quite uneven. There was quite a bit of rising and falling. Benny Greb is all about playing with the feel, and with the Latin influences it's not supposed to sound very quantised anyway. The Mark Guiliana solo I did was also quite a fluctuating tempo track. On the other hand with my Jojo Mayer video, he was unbelievable solid. Only moving one or two bpm at a time. In the bit at 4:57 Benny naturally slows down when the snare slows down, and vice versa. I tend to prefer the solos which do fluctuate in tempo as they are usually the more improvised and unprepared ones.
