Funny enough, in Tesla owners manuals, there's a note about white smoke when using a Supercharger or other DC fast charger. It just notes that it's steam and is normal. I guess too many people freaked out after seeing their cars seemingly smoking while charging.

    Great video. A short summary:
-blue= oil (eg leaking valve seals)
    -black= fuel (eg too rich)
-white= water (eg moisture in pipe), or coolant (eg blown gasket)
-grey= black+white= oil+water, or cat converter (eg purging after careful driving)

Years ago I used an '87 Chevy Sprint for commuting (3 cyl. 1.0L) - that car developed so much vapor (condensation) that it rotted the muffler in a matter of a few years - went through 3 mufflers - fortunately since I bought the lifetime warranty at Midas - I only paid for the first muffler (and end exhaust pipe). The car was a great commuter though.

One car always comes to mind when I see blue smoke coming from the tailpipe. Early 90's Lexus LS400. Owned two of them and the power steering air control valve was notorious for failing. It would suck the power steering fluid into the intake and would burn out of the exhaust hence why it was always low in power steering fluid. Plugged the outlets and smoke was gone.

Blue smoke is also possible from power steering fluid in Toyota's, since they use ATF. The 2UZ has a Power Steering idle air control valve that can fail and allow ATF into the combustion chamber. Blue smoke at startup is the main symptom.

Here in Europe, Grey/white smoke can also be cause by DPF regen. Soot gets burned in the DPF at very high temps (normally 550 degrees celcius, sometimes at 600 degrees) and goes out of the exhaust and has a very strong diesel smell. While regening, if you stop at a light, the smoking will stop and smell is no more, till you start driving again. This till the regen process has stopped.

    • @hadiamrane
      @hadiamrane 15 днів тому

@@andreashoiby4333 Nope, heck, even if they had one, people still will not buy it. Only huge petrol cars that are terrrible in fuel efficiency. Most diesels (even the ones in big SUV like BMW) can easily get you 4.9 to 6 liters / 100 KM. This is all because of emissions regulations. Yes, you have to check for lots of stuff that can go bad, especially on a euro 6 engine, but they are really efficient. You can easily go 1000+km on a single fill up of diesel. In US, there are only diesels in trucks, that's as far as i'm aware of the existence of diesel there.

I recall taking my dad’s car on the highway many years back , as he only drove it around town most of the time I though maybe I should give it an Italian Tune Up (before I even knew that’s what it is called) , I rung it out in 3rd gear and as it got up into the higher rpm’s it’s started to misfire and lots of grey smoke out of the exhaust. As we still had leaded fuel back then it was just lead coming off the spark plugs, valve faces, exhaust manifold and cylinder head. We were on holiday at the time and on the way home he commented how much better the car was running…..I didn’t take the credit.

Cruising at 2000 rpm at highway speed is not driving it hard, no. Full/near full throttle running up to near redline a few times. Either from a stop, or slow/drop down gears on an empty highway and then full throttle back up to cruising speed. An entrance ramp to a highway is a great opportunity.

When he says drive it hard, I think he means drive it at high RPM. I don't think he means "do 120 on the highway" no way to do that safely. You can drive it hard and still go slow. Just use lower gears for little longer.

    • @rdspam

An entrance ramp onto a highway, off at the next exit, then the entrance ramp back the other direction, repeat a few times in a loop. Accelerate slowly up to 15 or 20, then hard on the throttle to merging speed. Takes maybe 5 minutes.

So bad I decided to push it into my stall while getting it out of the spot to push it into the shop, I noticed something else; the brake pedal didn’t feel right, like at all, and I could smell brake fluid when hitting the pedal as well. Anywho, the tailpipe smoke smelled really weird, but familiar, and then it hit me; I was smelling burnt brake fluid. The master cylinder was leaking into the booster, and vacuum from the engine was sucking all the fluid leakage into the intake. 😅💀

Only at operating temperature if idling 3-5 minutes in traffic, upon take off it puffs what appears a white/blue smoke oil smelling and with pre ignition effect. Doesn't do it when driven hard or coasting down hill. Has High camcover vacuum. The engine rebuilder did say bores were borderline worn. But this as a Layman seems more valves? When I did the VVTI cold start gear change out in our Matrix with the 2ZR, I reassembled with making the mistake of getting 1 tooth off on the timing. The car started and ran, with misfiring and emitted a that white smoke and I believe that I got that smell. I shut it down and restored it and it works fine now. I have not seen any white smoke. Just wondering if I damaged the head gasket with that start?

What about odorless vapor at startup in all weather including summer? My Acura TL is perplexing.

You give great useful information on gas powered vehicles. I have seen several videos where 'mechanics' comment on not letting your new gas powered vehicle warm-up anymore. they recommend letting it cold idle only long enough to buckle your seat belt. Can you give advice on cold engine warmups, especially for Direct Injection Naturally Aspirated V-8's?

You do not have to sit there for half hour but nothing has changed in that department. They all still have pistons cams crankshafts etc. A little time to let the idle drop and get things moving and fluids circulating then gentle driving until up to temp is fine. Getting in and moving right out first thing in the morning is not the best idea.

I really enjoy your videos. I find them very informative.
I have a question and haven't been able to find a response on your channel. Back in the day, it was very common to undercoat a car in Northern areas of the contry that use salt on roads. With manufacturers now putting alot of plastic underbody protection/shielding on, do you feel it is still good to undercoat the vehicle?
    Thank you

AMD, I have a question for you. I have a 2017 Camry LE with the 2.5 with 240k on it. I change all my fluids regularly, oil 4k, transmission fluid 50k, and coolant every two years. Will I ever experience a head gasket issue? I watched one of your videos on head gasket leaks and was wondering if I change my coolant regularly if I will eventually experience a head gasket failure.

Changing your coolant every 5 years or 75k miles is more than adequate. It will only help reduce the chance for a head gasket issue a slight amount. Some cars are just more prone to it.

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry that has been blowing some blue smoke at startup. I heard you have to remove the head which is really tough in that 2.4 liter. Your professional opinions? I think I'm using about a pint and a half a thousand miles.

I've always thought the amount of white smoke i see on my 2023 3rd gen tacoma V6 (2GRFKS) was alot on startup. especially when it's very cold out. I believe the initial massive amount comes from the EGR system running on cold startup? would that be a correct assumption to make?

You need to use all your senses when it comes to cars. Its very important to prevent big bills. AMD, can you please make a vid how you would inspect a car?

I was worried, in cold weather, I sometimes remote start the car as I am about to head out to let the car warm up for a minute. I see the white vapor exhaust but I also smell a strong exhaust smell. It seems to smell like maybe a combo of gas and exhaust? Once my trip ends I do not smell this anymore

Bought a new Camry LE. It has white smoke or cloud coming out of the pipe all the time. It's been a year. What needs to be done?
