Motive: He was furious with Paul because of the boating accident. Not because Paul's actions resulted in the death of Mallory Beach died, but because Paul's criminal trial and resulting civil damages case was going to put enormous pressure on Alex because his financial records would have to be divulged to the Beach's attorney, Mark Tinsley. The CFO confronting him earlier that day was another huge addition to the pressure he was feeling, further increasing his anger at Paul. Add that to Paul and Maggie repeatedly 'confiscating' his drugs and Maggie preferring to live away from him at Edisto Beach, her reluctance to return that day because his father had been transferred to hospital, and possible refusal to transfer the Moselle property to Alex's name was the last straw. His anger towards them had been brewing for some time.
Finally a common sense logical response
there was no evidence of any of this, merely a creation in the bullshit factory if your mind.
This is EXACTLY why he killed them. BINGO. Just like Alex admitted, oops, um, stated, “whoever did this had been planning this for a long time.” And then the nerve that the criminal actions of the “Little Detective” boxed him in as he was onto his continued pill popping and there’s no telling what else he found out about his father.
Yeah, I'm with you on this. I think with Paul gone, Alex thought the civil trial would stall. Maybe Maggie was in the wrong place at the wrong time or maybe he also meant to kill her too. This really comes down to what would happen to the civil case if Paul died. I'm not an attorney but my guess is that the civil case would be delayed and give time for Alex to come up with another plan.
Also, I think the botched suicide backs up this hypothesis. If I remember this correctly, initially Alex claimed that someone was trying to kill him. That narrative would have basically exonerated Alex from the initial murders.

Don't forget about Hakim Pinckney. Rendered a quadriplegic in an accident, most of his settlement pocketed by his attorney (i'll give you one guess who that was), forced to live in sub-par care facility, becomes disconnected from ventilator and suffocated to death. Then there's all the other victims who he "only" robbed.

As a resident of SC, there are a lot of powerful families that have their roots in the “old world” and are of “old money” especially in the low country. It’s a totally different culture. We were reminded back when Paul crashed that boat when he was hammered drunk and kicked killed that girl. It was covered up and swept under the rug. Just a lot of shady activity.
Not really different from any geopolitical place. It’s who you know that counts.
The fact that Alex tried to fake his own suicide (unsuccessful) and stage it as a a murder shows me that he's totally unhinged and desperate. He's capable of anything.
EDIT: Well the jury came back quickly. They believed he was capable of murder. 3/2/23.
But that was not discussed in the trial, so jury will not know about any of that.

I agree - Paul WAS the little detective after all. those are tow pieces of vital information - SLED may have thought it was Alex, but nothing to prove it except the weapons being Murdaugh weapons, and a few discrepancies about his time at his mother's. He would not have the change of clothes in as evidence and he would not have himself placed at the kennels. They could not prove this case without Paul's videos.
The police were doing it at the start and I think it it is pretty likely these police under the supervision of the Murdaugh appointed solicitor Duffy Stone, botched aspects of the crime scene investigations and searches.

The Snapchat video, which he wouldn’t have known about that, is the most damning thing for me. Can’t get over the fact that he was there before it happened and lied about that
You can lie but you can't cover everything! He took his son's phone out perhaps to see if he had taken any photos with him in them at the kennels but he didn't think about SNAPCHAT

The Snapchat proves barley anything. Also they don’t have a real time of death. They are trying to argue that they died based on phone usage and the property was known to have dead spots all over.

Or something like that (it’s been a long long trial, and I’ve watched it daily) that alone was so suspect and odd. Your sons brains are across the ground the back of his head only had the brain stem still attached - and his first thought is to grab Paul’s phone. Sorry, no parent on this earth would realize their kid even had pockets at that point. Added with the 9-11 call that starts recording the moment you dial, he wasn’t crying or freaking out until the operator picked up… Then the kennel videos?? He got what he deserved- well, I’d want death- but for what was offered; I’m happy the jury saw through his bs.
I can only imagine the surprise on Paul's face as he was shot by his dad, and the horror on Maggie's face as she sees Paul's body and knows what is coming for her.

I think she was trying to run to the car to get away. If you look where she was found. She was completely surprised and clearly she would have seen an unknown person first. That’s why Paul was shot first and Maggie second. Paul knows how to defend. Maggie wasn’t into hunting and weapons.
I believe the reason she was facing the assailant was because she knew him and was hoping to get him to stop

I think he murdered his son because of the upcoming trial. Paul being dead was damage control. He found out Maggie had seen a divorce attorney. Maggie filing would have ultimately exposed him as to his financial misdeeds, his drug addiction, and left him wide open for speculation causing damage to his reputation and standing in the community. Alex has gotten away with his deceptions for so long I believe he felt he could continue in that vein. I’m trained in addiction recovery. When suffering from SUD, an addict will do anything to keep their source flowing. They can’t even consider not having their drugs, and will go to any length to prevent that from occurring. In his evil mind, I think considering everything, eliminating his wife and son could be the answer to some of his immediate threats. He’s a stone cold killer, a psychopath, and lying thief. I truly hope he goes to prison, then to Hell.
So you have experience with drug addiction and think that someone could realistically spend $50,000 a month on pain pills ?
To even get to such a level if it was possible at all the road to that level of tolerance would mean he had been an addict essentially his entire life.

@@mobilegameclips5628 I have a lot of experience with addiction during my work and with oxy. I know he couldn't consume that much and function. He could have been addicted and functioned just fine. Just not to that level. No telling what other evil hasn't come out about this monster of a man. After a certain level of intake, the opiate addict will nod out all the time being very obviously impaired. Also his son Paul tells Alex that Maggie found "bags" of pills in his brief case...bags! That doesn't sound like a small amount. Narcissist also love impressing people so his lifestyle would have been important. No matter how successful they are insecure and must be a big shot over and over.

Also she moved into the Beach house & it was where she was living. Alex coaxed her to go there that night. Alex needed the beach house to be refy'd bc he needed the $$ to pay back the firm before they found out, but Maggie held it up by not letting the appraisal being done. You see, wen you are contemplating divorce & believe you are going to get that asset in the divorce, you dont want to mortgage it to the hilt prior to that. He blamed Maggs for him getting caught (along with Paul boating accident) and also felt she was plotting against him.
Have I totally missed where he explains how he was able to check both victim’s pulses without getting any blood on himself or how he removed the blood prior to law enforcement arriving?

His clothes he was wearing earlier that day were NEVER RECOVERED either. He changed clothes and the other ones went poof.

I think prosecution knew he will make up a story that doesn't help the case they have. Because we see him coming up with new stories all the time, he lies all the time, I think they wanted the jury to piece it together because if he asked Alex, that might have been logical (despite a lie) and hurt their case.
He was panicking due to his fraud. Maggie wouldn't let him mortgage the properties, and he was being sued for millions due to Paul's boat accident. When you back people into a corner they're capable of doing anything.

He backed himself into a corner all by himself. His wife was waiting for the result of a quiet forensic accounting audit while preparing for a divorce. His office had confronted him about missing millions on the day of the murder. This was a very cold blooded planned double murder. With Paul dead the boating accident trial would halt, with Maggie dead all her money & multi-million properties would including Moselle would go to AM. If it wasn't him who among his brothers would have helped him? Was that cousin who shot him involved? Why did Murdaugh lie about being with both dead family members shortly before the murder, insist to the caregiver about the time spent with mother, insist with housekeeper about clothes worn on day of murder? IMO, he didn't kill them to distract, he killed them for money. And why was he looking for a restaurant & viewing porn while waiting for the police after the 911 call? His housekeeper & in law testified about AM's behavior after the murders for someone who had just lost 2 family members.
Especially if on drugs. He's guilty as sure as the sun rises in the East.

My theory about the motive: he planned a murder suicide and couldn’t go through with the suicide because he’s a narcissist. He disgraced his family, disbarred etc… He and his son we’re both going to jail between the financial crimes and the Beach homicide. His wife would be completely broke from all of the lawsuits.
Good theory. I’ve also pondered if this guy wouldn’t kill himself rather than spend life in prison. I can’t see him being able to do the time so to speak. But as you say about narcissists…..

Does an innocent man who just lost a wife and child in a heinous crime immediately think about it and start lying? No he did the unthinkable. But to him he stopped the law suite and save his son from fifteen to twenty-five years in prison and he didn't have to argue with his wife about selling the beach house. They stopped his law firm from coming down on him about fraud they had been alerted to. His pal Attorney Chris Wilson put off asking about the 192,000 Alex took him for. Alex was, he says, addled by taking abt. 60 of the 30 mg oxy tabs every day. His credit lines, 1 million, and 6,000,000, were maxed out. He had big loans, his properties were mortgaged. He was borrowing from his dad and law partner John Parker (6 figures at the time). Alex was in the deepest of shit and his plan would have worked, if law enforcement had not arrested him for the murders.

I watched the Netflix doc and I believe he may have killed his wife and son for a few reasons combined. Wife was digging into finances and seeing a divorce attorney and knew too much. Son had something to do with his court case (boat accident/Mallory's death), whether it was regarding finances or reputation or also knew too much. And lastly a good old classic, life insurance to be collected
I think if there was actual evidence of Maggie wanting a divorce, CW would have brought that up in trial. It would be good evidence.

Totally I keep thinking about how it could of been done. It had no structure and was all over the place. Think they had legit things like investigation not being perfect. Yet that was because who Alex was not because they focused on him. Think after Alex testifies and blew all there work he was defeated.

I think Alec did it and he knows he did it and he knows the jurors know he did it but I think he is throwing himself on the mercy of the jurors on the grounds of being under the influence of massive amounts of drugs . The surprising thing is he can’t remember the conversation/words exchanged with his wife and son. Even to remember what transpired between them on the last moment he saw them alive. I remember very well the last words I exchanged with my loved ones when I lastly spoke to them before their sudden death especially after such a brutal death. Sure those are the very first things he would have said to the 911 call; recounting when the last time he saw them alive.

Paul called him earlier that day and told him he found his pills and his mom knew,so they needed to talk. Alec said when he's going through withdrawal,there isn't anything he wouldn't do to get his drugs. I think when he went down there to get his pills,going through withdrawal,Paul refused to give him the pills, so Alec might have grabbed the gun to intimidate him and accidently shot Paul , knowing this couldn't become public and Paul suffering from the first gunshot,Alec put him out of his misery by shooting the final shot. Maggie hearing the shot ran toward Paul and Alec then he shot her,probably crazed by thinking this was all her fault by being against his drug use,knowing he needed them.
When Alec was in the police car,the pills Paul had taken were in the pocket of his shorts ( bulge in pocket )
He looks like he's full of regret and guilt,not sadness at their death.

I think the drug abuse is bs. He said to his sister in law someone was planning this for a long time. That's premeditated. Not spur of the moment. He owed a lot of money to a lot of people and the Mallory Beach lawsuit would have exposed his fraud and cost him even more money. It was a domino effect of things going wrong for him. His conclusion was getting rid of his problems, Maggie and Paul.
@@guyonmybike it was from Alex retrieving Paul's phone. He even admitted it but stopped. If he had succeeded in getting rid of Paul and Maggie's phones I think he quite possibly been acquitted

Thanks Bruce. His lies to police on the night is horrendous pointing to real guilt imho. Anyone who genuinely wanted to find the killer would do EVERYTHING to help police to find the killer. He did the opposite for months...until he saw his story unravelling. I totally believe he was there and probably did it OR definately knew who did. Notably, the dogs were not barking on that video...every dog will warn about a stranger its natural instinct. Imho no strangers were present at that time.

The killer would still be out there and if he was there a few mins before and saw nothing wouldn’t make a difference. With that said….it certainly does look like he did it, just don’t understand why?! If I was on the jury I would have to say not guilty cause the DA definitely didn’t prove guilt.
I think he knows who did it. I don't think he is the one that did it. They rushed this indictment and they don't have the proof for the charges for which he's been convicted. He will be considered not guilty based on law, however he is clearly guilty of knowing something.

Halfway through his testomony Alex slips up and say Maggie asked me to leave. Then he realises he's messed up and changes what he says. I can't belive no one has picked up on it. The motive is, she wanted him out and he was loosing the last thing he had.

It's seemed to be alex that dictated the cross examination which is a big no no. We all know he did it but I think he'll get a hung jury. They didn't even jump all the fact that Alex said the dogs where calm because there was no1 else there. This cross examination was really frustrating.

AM had to have known the time Maggie and Paul died in order to lie about being at the kennels because if he was innocent for all he knew they could have been killed 2 minutes before he pulled up that night and found them. He did go back to the house to get another gun in case someone was still out there but then again why lie about the kennels if he thought someone might still be there?? He knew the specific time to lie that's why and figured there would be some sort of time of death established that would be closer to him leaving than returning that night. Alex being careful to protect his alibi was what caused his paranoia not his drug use.
The murders could have happened at any time between 9pm and 10pm especially while he was at the mothers residence so why lie? Guilty as sin because he knew exactly when they died and he knew that law enforcement would quickly work that out as well.

@@notme2day he was on a golf cart. He had plenty of time. There’s another cabin, a hose right there in the kennels, and a place to butcher kills on the property that weren’t searched. He lied about being at moms house for 40 mins because he was only there 15-20.

Buster knows the truth and is wrestling with it. His immediate family has been taken away by death or incarceration. I can’t imagine what’s going through his mind. He has his doubts. I saw it when he testified, I watched while he sat in the courtroom and I heard it during their taped phone calls. If anyone knows what Alex is capable of it’s him.

Another important thing. Miss Libby's, (his mother's) caretaker was told by him when he went to her house that he was there 35 minutes. When she said he was actually there 15-20 minutes. She had no reason to lie. She really liked her job.

Really the caregiver is the real hero here- she stood up to this most powerful person in the low country, the people she worked for, and refused to lie- that took guts.

As someone else from the area, we (for the most part) think he did it. However, we’re afraid he’ll get a hung jury if not found not guilty. Crossing fingers he’s found guilty. Who else would have known they’d be there that night at that time (they didn’t usually stay there) and he just happened to leave minutes before they were killed? 🤔

I think Maggie discovered the pill thing was much bigger than Alec personal use. Paul knew things too. I think they confronted him at the kennels, Alec snapped.
Makes sense bc even with severe pill addiction there's no way he was spending that much money on pills. And with high opiate tolerance you get the nods and nobody ever saw him nodding off.
Drug addiction especially those nasty pills can turn an already unstable and paranoid person into a monster. We'll never know, but my guess is his wife and son would be alive today had the pill addiction either not ever existed or had treatment cured him. It's very difficult to get through to spoiled rich entitled brats like this one. This was a runaway train headed for the dog kennels.
He couldn’t have killed them with two different guns if they had confronted him. He blindsided them. There was no confrontation at the kennel, it was just Alec luring his victims to a convenient area where he could hose off and have the guns waiting and ready.

The motive is that he wanted to sell the Mozell property. It was solely in Maggie's name. At least in my state, everything goes to the surviving spouse. He had testified last week that he couldn't take out a loan against the Mozell property because it was in Maggie's name.

He was being sued by thee Boat accident - Paul might go away for 20 years. Maggie's wedding rings are in her car, Her sister convinced her to go to Alex that night. On July 8th Alex wanted to mortgage the Beach House not $750,000. Maggie would not sign. When Alex slips up and says after diner, he says when Maggie told me to just go. I think it had a whole other meaning than go to the Kennels. Alex slips up again.
To further support the fact that he was in a frantic rush to get to and from his mothers house quickly, here’s a little detail that even the prosecutors missed: Note on the overall “dot map”, that Alex avoided the only stop light between his house and his mom’s - the light at the intersection of the two highways. He turned a block earlier and made three quick turns at three side street intersections rather than risking one long turn if he got stuck behind someone at the red light. It wasn’t just going 80 MPH, he was knowingly shaving off additional time by avoiding the light.

Did Bruce really say that was impossible? What, in your experience, is a more reasonable amount of either money or drugs? What do you say to all those commenting such a drug habit is _not_ out of the question? And, more to the point, how do any of those questions prove he murdered his wife and son? I think his testimony told us his motive. He was paranoid. He is a drug addict. The weekend before at the game he was at the hotel not feeling well cause he was detoxing. He told us in the police car first interview that night he had a pocket full of pills. Anger and hatred towards Paul over the boat accident and taking/looking for his pills. I think he slipped when saying Maggie asked him 'to leave'. He 'got out of there'.
Yes he killed them for sure and for pitty so he could get out of his messses at law firm .
It’s interesting that he went out of his way to try to convince the jury that at the time of death Paul didn’t even care if he quit opioids. And that Paul convinced Maggie the pills were no big deal. But then for some reason, despite not planning to detox again until “after the criminal boat case” he was choosing to withdraw in the hotel room. But then he was back on his pills the next day to deny withdrawing at the time of the murders.
I wonder if there was something to the theory that he had gotten pills from someone before or at the games that weekend. And on Monday is Paul found them and swiped them. He stays behind to take some pills and relax…looks in his hiding place and they are gone. Grabs a gun in a rage to force Paul to give them back. Extra pissed because Paul shouldn’t be giving him a hard time because is the core reason for a lot of the problems that are stressing him out. Either they did at one point or he feels like they should have had an agreement that Paul shouldn’t be giving him a hard time while he’s pulling all these strings to clean up Paul’s mess. Pulls a gun on Paul to insist on him giving them back. Paul refuses and either by accident or rage Alex kills him. Then he kills Maggie after. Maybe he knew she was done there…maybe he didn’t. That would explain him leaving his phone behind. He’s been in a rage leaving. Maybe he did go into Paul’s pockets at that point looking for the pills.
Maybe he thought he could do figure out his way out of the financial stuff if they could just stop messing with his pills. He just moved those action to finding them because he knew that they would notice his phone out of his pockets. I think he blamed them for cussing this. The pills HELPED him and they couldn’t understand that! They helped him focus!
Maybe he pulled the pills from Paul’s pocket when he turned him over and supposedly his phone fell out. I think you’re right on about the detox angle.

He is not only the last person to see the wife and the son alive, the weapons used to kill them were weapons belonging to the family. So if someone else did it, they would have to had come to the crime scene without a gun. They would have had to know where the guns were.
One theory I’ve heard that seems to fit very well is that he originally wanted it to look like Paul killed his mom, then himself. But he didn’t kill Paul with the first shot, so he had to switch suddenly from faking a murder-suicide to a double murder, and did a crappy job

I read about the case (the boating accident, and lawsuit) quite awhile ago, in an article in People, I think. Then, I heard about the murders of his wife and son. My gut reaction was “the husband did it”. I believed it from day one, and didn’t even know about his voice on the snap. I mean, who else could have done it? Putting him on the stand was the worst decision I’ve ever seen in a trial, and I’m a retired LEO.
Just finished the Netflix documentary and the first thing I thought was "I gotta see watch Bruce has to say about this shit" XD
I truly hope the jury sees through this Alex Murdaugh false testimonies. I pray justice is done to Maggie and Paul! These murders were horrific!

I think the worst thing Murdaugh did was totally absolving the boat wreck families and instead pointing to the online trolls as the culprits. He really thought, as he looked down at his butchered son…the internet troll really did hate him? Not the family or partner of Mallory. Not the other 2 girls that he serious injured that night or their family/friends?
Without the prosecution outlining the boat case families alibis they were part of reasonable doubt for alternative suspects…but now even Alex doesn’t think they are credible suspects and he knows this case super well! Better than any of the paid lawyers, I dare say.
So now the reasonable version of events that the defences has officially entered for their case is strangers that attacked Paul online. But they weren’t on the grounds already at 8:45 when Alex left the kennels until 8:47ish when he entered the house. But they arrive by 8:50 to kill them both by 8:53.

A missed opportunity: the prosecutor should have asked Alex, “You’re a family annihilator, aren’t you?” And when Alex responded, “no”. The Prosecutor could’ve folded all the other financial transgressions and even the boat case and the young man’s death, and his law firm staff into the wrap saying one way or the other YOU annihilated these families in some way.
