In this 1944 film from the British National studios, Godfrey Tearle plays a proud veteran of WW1 who is rejected for military service at the outbreak of the second world war, but finds fulfillment by helping a group of cockney evacuees. This film was directed by the prolific Maurice Elvey, and was a rare starring role for character actor Godfrey Tearle, perhaps best remembered for his performance in Hitchcock's "The thirty nine steps", and the Ealing films "Mandy" & "The Titfield Thunderbolt". Another forgotten film, currently in limbo like most films from British National, this is a warm and human story that develops its characters well. It would have provided a meaningful story at the time of its release, suggesting that there were many ways to contribute to the war effort other than front line fighting,. Look out too for singer/actress Petula Clark making her film debut at the age of 11, and also John Laurie of Dad's Army fame, playing a character not too far off in age from Pte. Fraser. Note that the British Board of Film Censors Cerificate introduction gives the film's title as "Medals for...." in the plural rather than the singular!
