I had a 71 westie in the late' 70's. Traded in my 66 Cooper s for it and they also paid me some money too, although I can't remember how much more. The van was awesome, went places off road that trucks, 4x4's couldn't get to , had the gas heater and we never had any trouble with. I was 18 when I bought it, had a beautiful girlfriend at the time and it was a great time . I've had many other westies since but that '71 was the reason that I bought all the others. Very practical and reliable if you don't mind going slow. Thanks for posting this, really takes me back .
I still prefer the 71 WF. It is the last that sported the streamlined wrap around front bumper, the large VW emblem, the lowered signal lights, the smaller oval rear lights, the crescent shaped air intakes and tapered pop top. Altogether more attractive than the later versions.
There is a little canvas cot up there, after around 1980 VW put a larger bed up top. But yeah, you could sleep up top but with the little canvas one, you couldn't roll over in you sleep.

A 1600 had around 120 horsepower if I remember correctly, I can't imagine what a shatty drive it would be with an automatic.
