I love getting into those "poor man's tarpon" during the fall run. Fun fish with a smaller inshore rod and light line while throwing half ounce metal and smaller soft plastics.
Yeah i was excited with that bonito. I never caught one before so that was a cool experience. I wasn't sure if those shad were hickory shad at first so that's why i said American shad lol but yeah there were some big ones! They are def a cool fish. Always appreciate the comment, hope you're catching them up during this run man. Tight lines!
Cool stuff. I'm pretty sure that was a Spanish Mackerel. Bonito fight like Albies and the markings on the back of your beautiful catch look like the Mack marks.
Yeah i wasn't sure myself at first. I assumed it was a bone because i thought Spanish macks have more of a spotted design on their backs, this fish had broken up stripes. Either way it was still a sweet catch lol.
It be cool if you can barely hook ur lure in fish skin ,I mean barley but the hook under the skin we're it can rip off when you give it a small tug to get ur lure deep.fin skin would be perfect.
Hey James. I live in Nassau county...never been surf fishing before. Would love to take my kids...would you let me know the best places to fish out of and what types of lures I should get? Thanks bud!
Surf fishing is a ton of fun you will enjoy it. The only thing is this time of year it's cold so you don't want to get wet so waders are a must. But I'd say since your in Nassau county you can't go wrong with hitting the Jones beach surf. And there's docks to fish off of at field 10 if you want to keep it simple. As far as lures you can't go wrong with a diawa sp minnow they are one of my top picks, storm swim shads in like 5" size, A17 diamond jigs work, and some top water poppers. Hope this helps and good luck catching!
The tsunami airwave elite surf rods are great bang for the buck. I've been using mine for a few years now and it's been performing flawlessly. Or you could look into St Croix surf rods like the triumph or mojo. Both are great rods at a decent price. As far as reels, a 5000 or 6000 size will do the job. Shimano, Penn or Diawa have some nice ones. Go with a SW(saltwater) version, they are sealed better for surf fishing.
Hey James love the channel ! I’ve always fished in Jersey only in the summer season but am ready to step into the winter season with my wife and kids can you give me any tips on cold gear like boots , pants , etc... to stay dry and warm? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks bud! Tight lines brother!
Hey thanks for the comment! I fish all throughout the winter and what i found to work the best is layers and those hand warmers lol. They say neoprene waders keep you warmer but i use my regular waders and just wear double socks, thermal pants and sweat pants. A waterproof jacket. Fishing gloves help tons, Stormr and Aquaskinz make some really nice ones. Definitely want to wear a fishing facemask(tub bandana), it helps block the cold wind pounding your face. Then last but not least those hand warmers. I put mine right in my gloves, and they make foot warmers that stick to your socks. I tried those out last winter and they helped a lot. Good luck this winter! Tight lines!
Hi James , my name is Ron . I am alway watching your fishing Videos, I just moved to Long Island here about 3 months now still new here . Can I go fishing with you if that is possible thank you very much!
I actually was using them on this outing, i have the 7" tsunami sand eels. But like sobe1knobe said, blues were around so i took it off. Didn't wanna have to throw out perfectly good lures from cocktails nipping the tails off lol
I'm using the 10'6 tsunami airwave elite surf rod with a 5000 shimano spheros reel. Spooled up with 30lb kastking superpower braid and using 40lb kastking mono leader line.
Awesome video! You are my kind of fisherman. To tell you the truth I'm losing faith in party boat fishing these days. With all the limits and everything it's not worth paying 60 dollars to get skunked or come back with just two fish. Surf fishing has caught my interest and you just made it come alive with this video! I understand the Robert Moses beaches are good for catching stripers and blues! Could you tell me when peak times are! Would greatly appreciate that my man! Keep up the good work! I'm a subcriber!
@@jamesschlickoutdoors Awesome! Will try it soon! Thanks for the tip. Robert Moses is so damn beautiful, and it's you and nature which makes it such an awesome experience. I tried surf casting last year without much success, but I'm learning how to read the beaches and look for the fish! Your videos have helped in that regard! It should be a much better year! 👍

Love these videos probably watched all of them already. Gonna start fishing again this year.
Nice man, always exciting to get on some bonito. I love the Hickory Shad too, one of my favorite fish. They’re huge this year!!!

That’s awesome, so much bait. I am heading out to the north shore for ablies and stripers. Awesome videos!!
Awesome! I'm jealous lol i wish i was going fishing today. Good luck out there! And thanks for watching👍

You should get the tsunami sand eel they work really good
Agree, never failed. But them Blues chomps the tail right off and then your down 4 and 10 bucks :)

Hi James I'm David from southeast Florida. What size single hook should I use on my 2, 3 and 4 oz spoons and diamond jig.
Hey what's up David. I never really swapped out hooks on my diamond jigs so I'm not 100% sure but i think they are 3/0 or 4/0 hooks.
Very Cool Congratulations Fisherman!
Stay with God and good fishing.👍🎣🐠
What set up do use James. Rod and reel. Line etc
I'm using the 10'6 tsunami airwave elite surf rod with a 5000 shimano spheros reel. Spooled up with 30lb kastking superpower braid and using 40lb kastking mono leader line.
Do you work your diamond jig on the bottoms through the sand?
I do a steady retrieve, i don't feel it hitting bottom but it's def being worked through the lower to mid water column
Good job...catch And relase
Hi James. Could you give me the link of your wading boots please? Thank you
I use korkers greenbacks

What time were you hitting the most?
I'd say it was better in the morning fishing the incoming tide that day. More bait was around.🎣
Nice video Keep it up
Fat cows started last Sunday in SouthFerry Shelter Island.
Nice! I really want to get out there soon before the run is over. Thanks for the heads up!
@@jamesschlickoutdoors hit me up
Was this out on sore thumb
Don't hook you lure on the eye part .between rod and much better your rod will last longer.
It looks like I have the hook in the eyelet but it's not lol. I always hook onto the bracket part👌
What beach is this
Are shad good eating?
I personally never tried them but i hear they are not bad, just really boney.
The roe is good.

👊 thanks for subbing. Your best times to fish Robert Moses would probably be sunrise, sunset, and nights if you have the night parking permit
