Porpoise Fucker it works and then it doesn’t. It shits out temporarily at weird times and then decides it wants to work again. No specific issue other than all the issues in random order that fix themselves after 20-30 minutes. It’s like the amp has a mind of its own. That amp has taught me to bring my Harley Benton 1x12 and Joyo Zombie to any gig as a backup for him.
Best part of this had to be the Rudy sneak in appearance haha. I think for metal it could definitely have a lot of potential, especially with the associations it's been put with!
I've had one of these in my collection for past 7 years..it's never let me down.. can get some amazing sounds out of it and have upgraded all the valves and the speaker itself. It was good before..even better now.. would never get rid of it..an amp that doesn't get the praise it deserves. If you can find one at good price pick one up
I can't express enough how amazing the Peavey XXL is. I used one for metal for 10 years in a row....with the right gates...its a perfectly cut Diamond.
I got a broken SV 212, the other day, with the intention of fixing and selling it. Now that I have it up and running, I have so say I'm impressed - I expected much worse and am now contemplating keeping it instead.
I used a Spider Valve MK2 Head a few years live and it was really good. I own 10 tube Amps at this point..5150 Blockletter, 6534, Triple Recto Rev G, JVM410...etc...just to mention a few. I still think the Spider Valve was really great for the money, especially live because a whole pod xt multieffect unit was build in
Yup my 212 was a pleasant surprise. Got it for the cost of the v30’s inside of it, I was prepared to turn right around and return it if it were shit, and I am finding myself unable to let it go. I almost got an Egnater Tweaker but I was more intrigued by this amp that was designed to take digital modeling signal. Id planned to use it as a tube power cab for my Axe 3 anyway. On its own it truly is a totally fine amp though. I didn’t at all expect that.
So glad you got to try 1 out. Very underestimated amp. I have a 2x12 version and it’s awesome . Got a dsl 40c ( Creamback 75) and tsl 100 with 1960a cab ( gt75 and v30 in x pattern). And I love that spider valve played a lot of shows with it . You nailed it though about putting it through a 4x12 makes a huge difference. The insane on those amp are really tight and the orange dual rec is pretty sweet too. Glad you didn’t give it the hammer.
I never thought I would want to anything line6. Now I might be buying a last minute gift for my son for Christmas. Thanks for giving us honest reviews and keep up the awesome work.
Admiral Bongo oh ok. Good thing you don’t need knee caps to play guitar. But I do need them if I want to pay an extra $800 for the helix. And he is only 14. I’m sure he will survive. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I have had the 100w Mark I head for 5 or 6 years. Without a doubt the best part of it is the 100w 6L6 Bogner designed power section. It has been a phenomenal power section to use with modelling preamps. I don't like thwe on board preamp, but thats why there is a loop. Hook up a decent cab...like the V30 white piping Spider Valve 412 cab, and its great. And it will make any modeller sound good...I've tried 4 or 5 through it, and it sounds decent on its own.
Iva what one for aageike it’s the mk2 it can do jsit aboit anything YOU HAVE TO DIAL IT IN. And it sounds good for anything and it’s cheap you can get oke in exeleent shape I’m sure for 400 or less
I’ve had the 100w with the 412 for 10 years - I understand the combo had some reliability issues, but I’ve never had any with the half stack. This head can usually be found used for about $350 on reverb and GC. The cabinet with the V30s is usually about $300
I run tube preamps into the loop return,so it's basically a Bogner power amp into a Vintage 30.I use them live on stage as a backline amp with other rack tube preamps.Works well with an AXE-FX as well, run outputs with no cab emulation into the loop returns, and run 2 outputs with IR cab emulation to Front of House.I bought one of them on Craigslist for $100 and traded a TS-808 Tube Screamer for the other.
The 311 tone is the best one.... loved this amp. I abused it for for years before it finally broke and Line 6 basically told me no fix. Served me 8 years of touring.
Nice, I play through the 100 watt tubed head and love the sound I get. Reminds me, I it to get it looked at. Been playing it for almost 10 years and still kicking ass.
Hey Mr F, I run the 100w head version (Mk1) on a tweaked dual rec tone (metal orange basis) through a 1975 Marshall 4x12 with g12h30s and it is superb! I like an early 90s tight Mustaine-esque tone and it totally delivers that. Kudos to you for posting this, it is NOT like the other early Spiders, all the best.
Nice find, never thought I'd hear those words come out of your mouth about a Spider! If you get a chance, check out the Randall RG75, I found one and it is great for hooking up to a large can and getting massive high gain tones.
I had the 100watt head for several years and it was a nice amp, Strymon even made a SVpre that went in the mk1 head and combo . it added an extra 12ax7 in the preamp and 3 or 4 different "push" settings. The MK1 can not be updated by firmware, the mk2 can be updated.
Hi Glenn, Glad you finally tested the Line6 Spidervalve (I commented on your videos a couple of times suggesting you do), I used my spidervalve MKII HD 100 head for gigging and in the studio for 10 years but it's now replaced by a HD PRO unit. I made it work with 6, 7 and 8 string guitars but boy does it rely on a good cab to sound decent. It was an interesting ride and the biggest problem I had with the amp was reliability - tube problems, electricity problems, board problems - just all around consistency. It was a good run and I'm glad I had it because I learned a lot but I would not recommend it today. Not when there are so many better, cheaper and reliable options. Keep up the good work Glenn! Cheers from Croatia.
Glen, when you mix together 4 guitar rhythm tracks do you ever 100% pan the tracks all the way to the left and right or do you always do 2 only completely left and right and the other 2 at 81%?
I've owned one of these, could never get a tone I was overly happy with out of it. The metal and insane channels were way too thin and the crunch was way too boomy. Best thing you can do with the one I had was plug directly into the power amp which made it somewhat usable.
I wonder if the eleven rack or digitech gsp 1011 is still usable today. The line 6 pod x3 pro is one of those older amp modelers that still receives some praise from guitarists. Most of these amp modelers are usually under 350 usd and for a rack unit that's very budget friendly.
Been gigging with the 112 Spider Valve mk1 since 2010 with the stock cabinet. You just have to spend some time tweaking it. Also this thing is relatively lightweight for that massive sound. Nice pedal platform as well. Clean sounds are great.
I saw a guy playing the head version of this thing live at a show in Atlanta. He had to cycle the power like 3 different times during the set. It would just stop producing sound for nor reason.
I had this in a head a few years back and loved it! I eventually switched over to a Peavey 6505MH but this was a great amp. I kind of miss it sometimes.
Glenn! Have you heared about the Peavey valveking (mk1)? It is a 100W tube amp, that costs around 200-300$, and it might actually sound good. It would be great to see it on fearless gear reviews!
Hi Glen, I just picked one up on Friday for 160$ and excellent condition, did I get a good deal? Let me know please. Thanks I saw the offer via an app called Offerup, and thought about it for two weeks, watched videos about it, but what decided me to get it was YOUR video and input. I was like " If Glen likes the fucking amp, then that's a go!" Thanks for your helpful input Glenn!
Hi Glenn. Why 4x12? I am using a Marshall's 4x10 (for gigs mostly though), and I quite happy about it, not only because it's just lighter (23 kgs vs 32 of 4x12), but has better attack and higher impendance, so I don't need to put my knobs to "11".
The Bugera 333 XL Head you reviewed. The latter versions had the bad power transformer jack on the main board fixed. I would say for the price lots of the Bugera line can be a great choice for those that cant afford high end tube amps. Its the same with there Behringer line. I use one of there Ultrabass heads and its quite amazing for under 300 bucks.
hey glenn so i know this is a super old video but have you ever heard of the line 6 bogner or considered checking it out on video? they're super cheap these days about 200-300 and are full on tube amps, plus they teamed up with bogner to make it so how bad could it be right? cheers from NY!
What's your opinion on the Fishman Loudbox. I've encountered them a fee times as a live sound engineer, and have been impressed with their direct out. I don't really know much about them, otherwise.
Love the sound of the Laney 4 X 12, I have a Peavey Blues Classic that can rock real hard I love it. It has an 80's metal vibe to it. I have been using it with my Two notes captor so I can dime it out and get that power amp saturation too.
I just came back to this video 2 years later because someone near where I live listed the head for an INSANEly good deal. Hopefully the seller will still have it when I get my paycheck this Friday so I can snag it. It'll be interesting to see how it sounds with the 1960A cab alone and then paired with the Windsor head on stereo. But if I can't get my hands on it, it's not a total loss because I can always find another head that might be better suited for my setup.
I remember I bought a 212 version that had the stock speakers swapped out with Vintage 30s and that thing sounded amazing. I missed the sound but I don't miss the hassle of maintaining tube amps....
My 212 spider valve has Celestion vintage 30's as stock. To quote the manual: "Speaker(s) - The Spider Valve 112 and 212 combos feature premium Celestion® Vintage 30 speakers. Enough said." So corny. =) Good sounding amp though, if a bit finicky with the presets and volume levels.
That doesn't sound bad at all when hooked up to a proper cab. Have you looked into the Line 6 DT25? it's basically a pod HD preamp into a very similar Bogner Power amp. Would love to see one on the channel!
Watching this I felt like watching WWE when the bad guy comes out and starts acting suspiciously nice, like talking about sportsmanship and following the rules, you know it's just a matter of time before the brass knuckles appears, lol!
Vox made a similar one with a tube power amp section (AD30VT) that you can get for next to nothing. I bought mine for $70 at a pawn shop and use it all the time. Not the heaviest tones without some pedals but has a lot of killer tones and models.
I love my spider valve mkii head. Great for a budget touring head with everything you need. I always had a soft spot for line 6. I know the spider iii and stuff is NOT legit for pro recording etc. But just grew up with them. Glenn, I appreciate your input and thanks so much for what you do!
Hidden gem: Laney AOR amps! As far as I know you can get those tone monsters for around 200-400 bucks in the US! If you ever get one on the show make sure to also use the push/pull potis on the EQ to shape the tone!
I’ve got a SV mark1 with a SVPre installed and it sounds killer, although I had noticed some funky farty mids on one of my cabs that I need to try with another cab. On the mark1 you can’t bypass the modeling tho
Rich here. This was my product and Ulrich is my buddy. Partnering with Bogner was a no-brainer. I met him when he brought the Fish to the AIC Dirt sessions. If you like using it as a head, you should check out the Spider Valve 100 watt head. Also the 412 we made for it used vintage 30s. That Laney sounded great though.
So I get that a 4x12 is vital for volume and sound distribution on a live stage, but in the studio, you only mic 1 speaker anyway right? So for studio recording, isn't a good 1x12 cabinet all you need?
I have a Spider Valve MKII head. I love it! I've used it live quite a bit as well as shared it with others in the back line. I run it through my Mesa rectifier cab
A guitarist of a band I helped out for a gig had one of the early line 6 combo with 100 Watt tube - poweramp and 212" speakers - back in 2000. The amp sounded like the Marshall JCM 800 at the 1936 212" cabinet. To be honest, I was pleased with the tone back then.
Wish you'd do a video on gate/preamp settings on the mic as you record the guitars. Trying to record myself and I keep getting tons of room noise, any suggestions as far as rack unit settings go?
Hey Glenn I know you are no fan of line 6 but what about the pod hd pro x? I recently got one for $200 from a family friend who runs a pawn shop and I found the fact that it's a rack mounted amp that works as a digital interface really interesting.
Hey Glenn, you should give it a shoot to the line 6 DT amp. It is a improved version of this same concept and it is actually simpler to use with only 4 sounds and the 4th one being a Mesa type. Check it out! Cheers!
Good amp! I used this for a solid few years as my gigging amp as it was loud enough for small venues (you're probably gonna be mic'd anyway..) and the foot controller allowed you to use different custom patches which was great for dialling in sounds that were good enough. Personally wouldn't use it in the studio though.
Just a heads up you can ONLY update the firmware with a FBV pedalboard. Once you have the updated firmware you get the ability to have more effects, as well as a separate post eq options in the menu section. It really comes alive after that. Lacuna Coil recorded an album with it actually.
I picked up a Carvin Legacy 212 combo. Switchable between 50W and 100W (4 x EL34) and has 2 Celestion 12" speakers in a closed back cabinet. I don't want tu gush, but it has every tone I need and I love it! FU Glen, love ur channel.
Hey, Glen. I'd like to hear your opinion on this : I have a peavey rage 158 practice amp that sounds like garbage. I also have a peavey 112 max hypervent bass amp that died. I took the guts out of the rage, and put them into the bass amp. I bought a zoom multi pedal, and hooked it all up. To my surprise, it sounds like a clear, angry, almost marshall type of sound. Would this drive you insane ? Or is it a good use of crap gear turned into something that I personally think sounds awesome ??
It isn't bad, and truly would say it is far superior than it's digital counterparts. Still, probably a tube screamer in front of it would help. Sound was still a bit muddy, specially in the low end. But still great for what it is. Great review, Glenn!!
I totally forgot i sent u some tracks for this video and i was shocked af watching it

Same problem. They are sketchy and often have problems with the master volume
Aaron Ceravolo maybe.
Aaron Ceravolo yup, DT50.

Love the HD100. It's a great head!!

I can't express enough how amazing the Peavey XXL is. I used one for metal for 10 years in a row....with the right gates...its a perfectly cut Diamond.
The right gates being.... An NS2 in front and a Decimator in the effects loop. That's all you need for a meshuggah type Djent.
I got a broken SV 212, the other day, with the intention of fixing and selling it. Now that I have it up and running, I have so say I'm impressed - I expected much worse and am now contemplating keeping it instead.

How about recording on Marshall Valvestate (Chuck Shuldiner's favourite) or Valvestate2000? I happen to have AVT275 and I love it.
Hey Glenn! Generally, which one do you prefer the scooped or the boosted mids guitar sound?
Thank you!
Hidden gem: Laney AOR amps! As far as I know you can get those tone monsters for around 200-400 bucks in the US! If you ever get one on the show make sure to also use the push/pull potis on the EQ to shape the tone!
That doom sound was awesome! Tony would be proud!
Are you aware of the known defects? Any documentation on these? It's been a love/hate ride for me ever since I bought it back in 2015
@@rajgopinoth4241 Still using mine every Sunday. You may need to change the tubes like any tube amp. What happened with you?
So I get that a 4x12 is vital for volume and sound distribution on a live stage, but in the studio, you only mic 1 speaker anyway right? So for studio recording, isn't a good 1x12 cabinet all you need?
I love hitting pawn shops and looking for odd ducks
I have a Spider Valve MKII head. I love it! I've used it live quite a bit as well as shared it with others in the back line. I run it through my Mesa rectifier cab
hey Glen, have you ever thought about making a "can you play metal on a Twin Reverb?" or other unsual amps for the genre?
Played judas priest on a 79 pro reverb with an od1 phase 90 wah
A guitarist of a band I helped out for a gig had one of the early line 6 combo with 100 Watt tube - poweramp and 212" speakers - back in 2000.
The amp sounded like the Marshall JCM 800 at the 1936 212" cabinet.
To be honest, I was pleased with the tone back then.
I was pretty impressed with the Bogner built Line 6 I tried.
Wish you'd do a video on gate/preamp settings on the mic as you record the guitars. Trying to record myself and I keep getting tons of room noise, any suggestions as far as rack unit settings go?
My neighbor has one of these, and although I wish it had a distortion dial instead of presets, it was very fun to play with.
Hey Glenn I know you are no fan of line 6 but what about the pod hd pro x? I recently got one for $200 from a family friend who runs a pawn shop and I found the fact that it's a rack mounted amp that works as a digital interface really interesting.
It's about damn time
Hey Glenn, you should give it a shoot to the line 6 DT amp.
Have you tried the spider jam
All Reinhold did was the power amp circuitry, if I remember correctly.
Just a heads up you can ONLY update the firmware with a FBV pedalboard. Once you have the updated firmware you get the ability to have more effects, as well as a separate post eq options in the menu section. It really comes alive after that. Lacuna Coil recorded an album with it actually.
glenn have you tried the dt25?
could you please make comparison of a cheap and expensive 4.12 cabs...
You should try the spider valve hd100 watt head that doesn't come with the cab I've always thought about getting one
As an owner of this amp, I’ve been dying to see you review this.
Looking forward to the pimped 4x12 episode!
Any chance on an IR pack with that laney?
If you can't afford a 4x12, could you just send the output directly to your interface and use a cab simulation?
Hey Glenn, why is it that 40 watts of tube power seems different than 40 watts of digital amplification?
Thanks!
How did you get to manage measuring digital amplification in fucking watts?
