Watching this video to pay respects to my dear friend from Myanmar. I assisted him with his English papers in college, and he would share his experiences living and attending school in Myanmar. Thanks for this informative video, and this invaluable insight into my friend's country of origin.

Next in Southeast Asia: Siam or Thailand? :0
no siam was our name until 1949 when it was changed to thailand
He already did a video about it, it's the one where he compares the names Thailand and Taiwan, just checks his channel.
Netsaurus Thank you! I will see it :0
Peter. No. Siam was a foreign name. The Thai people have always referred to their country as 'Thai'. The name change to promote a national identity separate from western imperialism. Same thing with Persia= Iran
Siam refers to the land, but Thailand is named after Thai/Tai people which was changed by the nationalist/fascist premier Plaek Piboonsongkram. I'm from Thailand.
8 Major Ethnics People In Myanmar
Myanmar is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia and it is bordered by China on the north-east, Laos on the east, Thailand on the south-east, Bangladesh on the west, India on the north-west and the Bay of Bengal to the south-west with the Andaman Sea defining its southern periphery.
One-third of Myanmar is total perimeter, 1,930 kilometers (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline. Being a country bordering with five countries, Myanmar has a diverse culture and multi ethnics groups with different background, culture and traditions. They have their own traditions and costumes.

If you are interested, George Orwell wrote a novel about Burma/Myanmar "Burmese Days", for which he was influenced by his days as a british soldier there.
Noice
I read Orwell's book about 45 years ago as a 13 year old.
So Burma changed its name to Myanmar, largely, to be more inclusive to other ethnicities... Well, that failed.
Ghipoli The Muslims in Myanmar want their own Sharia state, don't blame Myanmar for punishing them
Adam Smith Obviously there are some radical Muslims among them, but they're one big ethnic group, native to the country, that consists of many people, including innocent women and children. You can't just ethnically cleanse a whole group, because of some extremists.
Islam is not an ethnic division but a religious one. Too often people say Muslim like it is a separate nation and I know that they like to think they're special but nah! No different to any other religion or fanatic group of humans.
No, it didn't. They shouldn't tolerate groups who are disruptive and against the culture of the land.
Well, that's the problem with Burmese definition. They consider "natives" for those who came before 19th century, which the officials think they shouldn't apply because large numbers came to Burma during the colonial era and therefore not indigenous in their rule. There was a kingdom but the inhabitants were displaced and no records. Also the fact that they have a bad history with Arakan natives, at least from 1960's. Also military have control over defense and budget didn't help at all. Strangely enough, this does not apply to Chinese or Indian.

can u do a video about how the nation of Malaysia gain it's name, and where word Siam came from in Thailand.
Malaysia is a federation of the states of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. The name is just, well, a name. But never ever refer it as Malaya.
Malaysia means 'Malay archipelago' 'sia' taken is from old Greek words 'nesos' means archipelago same goes to Indonesia (indies archipelago) or Austronesia (Austral nesos) southern archipelago

Why the Netherlands call their people as Dutch instead of Netherlanders???
- Denmark
- Switzerland
- Philippines
- Madagascar
YouCan'tAlwaysGet WhatYouWant I don't know which channel made the video that I saw about it, but the Dutch's endonym for themselves is simply Nederlanders. Anglophones call them Dutch largely due to their proclamation of a "Dutch" (Germanic) identity in their fight for independence from Spain. That exonym has since stuck.

We call it Hindustan, Bharat, Brt and 1750 other names to India in India itself

The Romanian Atheist al-hind might come from the hindi language of india

Well...English name comes from the original language the name came from which is palestina from roman and to arabize that name the P was changed to F Just like how Singapore in Arabic is singafora .
So its palastina-falastina-falastin

Can you do a whole video about British place names in America, not just the obvious ones like York and New York obscure ones?
Yay my country thanks Name Explain 😊
Can you explain why races have different names like
Chinese = Sino = Sino-Japanese War
French = Franco = Franco-British Union
Or
English = Anglo
The last two are simple: Franco from the Frankish kingdom around the VII century, or by its latin name: Francia. While Anglo came by the people who settled Britain in the Ancient Era (he talks about it in another video). While for Sino I have no clue. Have a good day!
Both French and Franco relates to the early Franks, a germanic tribe who settled the region and created the Kingdom of the Franks, what later became Francia (or France in english).
English comes from England, which is a corruption of "Angle-land", the land of the Angles, another germanic tribe, that with the Saxons migrated to the Isle. The word Anglo relates in this case to the Angles.
I believe the word China actually came from Sino not the other way round, I can’t remember the origins of Sino though.
+Sparx632
While they might both come from the same etymology, one is Latin ( _Sinae/-rum_ ) via the Greek ( _Σῖναι_ ), while the other entered Europe via the Portuguese ( _China_ ), apparently those prefixes are called a combining form. In Spanish we use the prefix "nipo-" for Japanese related things, clearly from the Japanese for Japan (日本 nippon)
Anglo (english)
Sino (chinese)
Indo (indian)
Franko (french)
Russo (russian)
Turko (Turkish)
wooooooq cool vid. thanks for this vid. :*

Remember the fact that there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian in Myanmar up until British Colonialism, when the small homogeneous nation was placed inside Greater India, and several millions South Asian immigrants poured in; while neighbors such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam under French Colonialism had no immigration issue at all.
there were heaps of other ethncities like Shan, Karen, Kachin, Chin, Mon most of whom are persecuted people by the Burmese military till this day
And that justifies f**** genocides ???
Like I said, this on going crisis in Myanmar is product of Colonialism, when the nation was placed inside Greater India, thus around 8 millions immigrants poured into small homogeneous country in long Colonial era, including Rohingya Bengalis from populous but tiny Bangladesh which has a population of 170 million, that had been sending millions of illegal immigrants into Myanmar for ages that Myanmar has declared national emergency in Rakhine State ever since early 1980s, but Western news medias ignored it all, as Myanmar had been boycotted by the West, when impoverished country turned to Socialism after long painful Colonial era; and as a result, hardly any one out of Myanmar knew truths. *its, not it's (which is a compounded "it is").
This should be further up
I went looking in the comments just for this. I was not disappointed.
Or it's as in owned by it. When used as the car of Peter = Peter's car meaning Peter his car.
+colin Paterson The genitive of "Peter" is indeed "Peter's" (with apostrophe) but the the genitive of "it" is "its" (without apostrophe). On the other hand "it's" (with apostrophe) is just short for "it is" and not a genitive.

LOVE THE VID
We have the same issue in Spanish. It can be called "Birmania"(Burma) or "República de la unión de Myanmar"(United Myanmar Republic)
The controversy exists in German as well, where the country usedto be referred to by the Germanized version Birma, which is now almost completely discontinued due to the feeling it would be offensive.
"Birma" has been obsolete for a while, though, and was replaced by "Burma" until recently, and even now, calling it _Burma_ is quite frequent. (Der Spiegel usually writes _Burma_ , for instance.)
2:44 - When including Barack Obama, it would be far from trivial to include the fact that he had spent formative years in the region and was fluent in Indonesian.
Explain macedonia 's name
Stole the name from the Greeks. There you go. :)
Named after Phillip (of) Macedon of course. It was nearly renamed Greatland after Phillip died.
They are south slavs that live in a greek territory.
Named after the area of Macedonia which overlaps with the country.
The country of Republic of Macedonia is located in a real region of Upper Macedonia. However there are also south, west and east Macedonias that belong to Greece. So Greeks hate Macedonians for taking that name. Macedonians are Slavs however there were many Slavs in ancient region of Macedonia, mostly slaves, mercenary and servants. First Slavic alphabet originated in ancient Greece.

Krystof Dayne the shortest name i know in burma is “uk”

Honestly, I'm a Burmese and I don't even know where the name Myanmar came from.
Myanmar or Burma; what's in a name, why it's such a big deal!
Burma/Myanmar would have been much better off without notorious Anglo British Colonialism.
Moreover, all thy Colonizers did in their Colonies was build infrastructure such as roads and ports so that they could ship abundant natural mineral resources back to Europe to make goods.
Without these raw materials, what can they do with their industrial revolution?
That is what Colonialism is all about; 'divide & conquer' 'divide & rule' 'divide & loot'.
[For instance, it is agreed upon the fact that Africa in general has progressed a lot more in the past 20-30 years than 200 years of Western Colonialism.]
Anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed for Myanmar, and it's long suffering people. Long live, peace and prosperity to people of Myanmar & Indochina!
In srilankan ancient books considered myanmar as burma and thailand as siam and cambodia as kamboja .we have a great relations since 800 AD with burma, kamboja, siam land and maldives.maldives was also 100% buddhists' untill 1000 AD
So if Burma is the informal name and Myanmar is the formal one, I imagine its like how one would use America vs the United States to describe the USA.
Which one came first, zero or naught. And where do they both come from!

Do a video on Guatemala?
You could compare the name change to that of Iran which was once called Persia -Iran is the more inclusive word as "Persia" was merely a part of the Iranian region.Or indeed you can compare it to "The United Kingdom of Great Britain" -once upon a time it was OK to refer to the UK as England but then the Scottish, Irish and Welsh demanded the more inclusive term "Great Britain."
Why is Europe and Europa sound so similar?

We change Bama into Myanmar because Bama is only a name for one ethnic group. When we are become freedom we have 7 enthnic groups and our languages is various and we cannot understand some languages but there is one language for one group. The language is called Bama that language is easy to use and understand for another 6 groups.so you can say that Bama means a language.when we are become an independent country w must give a name for all of us 7 groups.if we give Bama that is only good for one group and not fair for the other groups. That why we change Bama int Myanmar.
Looks like I can study history from here without a book
Burma or Myanmar has been suffering for centuries; first under British Colonialism, when the nation was placed inside Greater India, thus around 8 millions immigrants moved into small homogeneous country in long Colonial era; secondly through boycotted by the West, as impoverished Myanmar turned to Socialism for a relief. In fact, Myanmar has a sad saying that goes 'A poor young girl got raped and get hurt twice', referring to their nation's double tragedies. This on going crisis in Myanmar is product of Colonialism, when the nation was placed inside Greater India, thus around 8 millions immigrants poured into small homogeneous country in long Colonial era, including Rohingya Bengalis from populous but tiny Bangladesh which has a population of 170 million, that had been sending millions of illegal immigrants into Myanmar for ages that Myanmar has declared national emergency in Rakhine State ever since early 1980s, but Western news medias ignored it all, as Myanmar had been boycotted by the West, when impoverished country turned to Socialism after long painful Colonial era; and as a result, hardly any one out of Myanmar knew truths. The “Our Burma Association” of multi-ethnic lords, led by Thakin Ba Thaung (1902-1980), awakened the nationalism of various ethnic groups across the country. "Myanmar" does not belong to one species. The statement of the Our Burma Association explicitly states that the country should be called "Burma" because it belongs to all ethnic groups and minorities, including "Myanmar". The name of the organization was given as "Do Burma Association" to represent all and not "Do Burma Association". It is also historically and linguistically appropriate for the name of a country inhabited by other ethnic groups, including Burma, to refer to the "Burmese" instead of the original "Burmese" instead of the original Burmese name. Its actual use has been satisfactory to non-Burmese ethnic groups as well. The official name of the Japanese-era country, which used the name "Our Burma Association", was "Burma Kingdom".
