Fascinating how people around the world have been “educated” to believe plastic straws are a primary reason for the World’s pollution! Excellent example of media getting folks (children and adults) to focus on an issue...real or perceived. The greatest scare is that most folks do not know they are being “educated”! Another beautiful video. Thank you. Be well.
Unfortunately in the West most don't seem to get symbolic meaning. They will gladly accept a plastic water bottle and then look at you as if you just slapped their mother if offered a straw. Many live their lives in cubicles by day and go home for their education from what is now days passed off as news.
Mathew Davis - Adventures and DIY Exactly! In Mexico and the Caribbean, plastic fencing is used to protect nesting sea turtles and their eggs on the public beaches but some are “triggered” by anything made of plastic. Plastic fencing has done more for sea turtles than damage silly straws have done. I was in downtown Chicago last weekend and Chicago has banned plastic straws. Umm, Chicago is a thousand miles from the nearest sea turtle but that was the reason for the ban. Critical thinking is not in the educational system any longer. Now the focus is on what “pronouns to address non-binary humans”! I totally get it why folks chuck it all away and sail....sometimes in plastic boats (fiberglass is a common type of fiber-reinforced plastic using glass fibers). Be well and carry on my Friend.
This is great, how about a shot of the chart. Millie and co seem very relaxed, there is a lot of shipping though, the boat is pretty nippy should be OK..
@@followtheboat Thanks Jamie and Liz I got that but if you have it, I would like to see your whole voyage on a chart start to finish and possibly harbours stopped in too. You are busy so please ignore this request if it involves extra work.
Glad it's not just us who get a bit worried now and then about this kind of situation... Sometimes knowledge can make you fearful because you know just how easily conditions can change and things go wrong! Cheers. Liz
I like the pirate prevention on the small Tanker at 09:20 in the video... overhauls stuffed to make them look like sailors on look out! When I see it at work I often wonder if it helps..
Well done, nice vlog again We ( my colleges ) teachat our commercial captains training that commercial ships do have the right of way because their bigger. There is no debate about that. Big ships can’t move as you do so don’t aspect they can accommodate your rule book. Sometimes big ships can’t even stop due to current, waves or underwater obstacles. And if they stop they need some time to do so. So to all pleasure boats .. just stay a way from them.
Well that was easier than you thought. Gotta love that. I swear when I saw some of those ships, I could smell the distinct odour of an old truck tyre with salt water in it. Nothing else on earth smells like that. Gotta go, I have a tree to climb. cheers.
Just wondering where u r heading for ? I’m a fairly newbie and only started sailing the west coast between Langkawi and Klang and I’ve found Colreg just generally aren’t followed in Malaysia
Frequently not followed, including tugs with long loads. We came up from Indo but know Malaysia /Thailand well. Spent five years cruising your current neck of the woods. Have fun up there, there's loads to do!
Well, the Java Sea was new for us, and the southern Indian Ocean. When we headed to Borneo from Anambas it was new, and from hereon (real time) it will all be new! 😃🙏 Liz
⛵🛳⛴🛥😧😬😲 Liz, the silver key around your neck looks SUSPICIOUSLY like a Penthouse Pet key! Something from your sordid past you care to share? And I don't want to hear how you were young and needed the money!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha! It's one of 5 designs given to me by our friend, American McGee, from his Alchemy collection: mysterious.americanmcgee.com/products/alchemy-keys-necklaces?_pos=3&_sid=1941f1a83&_ss=r Each key references an alchemy symbol: Mercury, Saturn, Luna, Mars, and Venus. Mostly I tend to wear the Venus symbol (also the sign of female ♀️) and Luna (🌙).
Singapore Strait, piece of p*ss. I've crossed it 50+ times and never had an issue. I was more freaked out crossing the north/south shipping lane between W coast of Pulau Jemaja and Tioman when we departed Anambas at 0300hrs in late July this year. Merging with and crossing (bows and sterns of) those bigboys running at full speed in the dark is downright nerve-rattling. I chat on VHF with each before we are 2nm distant (or earlier) and let them know our intentions. Usually no issues but it's bloody scary when you're in-between two of them heading in opposite directions, in the dark.
Yes, that's a bastard of a crossing and we have that coming up soon. There was one incident between us and two tankers going in opposite directions that prompted a third skipper to come on the VHF saying "this is the best entertainment I've had at three in the morning in ages"! It was a comedy of errors for anyone listening to the three way conversation but it was a trifle disconcerting for us on a tight haul doing seven knots!

I think the plastic straw is meant as a symbol for the pollution problem, it's not meant literally as the worst thing in the world... Liz

Been off for a while but glad to hear you guys voice,s again
Good to have you back!
This is great, how about a shot of the chart. Millie and co seem very relaxed, there is a lot of shipping though, the boat is pretty nippy should be OK..
It was all good in the end. Millie was more relaxed than us! Jamie filmed the traffic on our chartplotter (08:25), did you miss that? Liz 👌

Maybe one day you can explain and show us the differences between beam and broad reach sailing? Thanks.
Nice! That's my home! I work on tankers, and Singapore Strait and TSS still gives me the tension when passing through it, though not often.
Glad it's not just us who get a bit worried now and then about this kind of situation... Sometimes knowledge can make you fearful because you know just how easily conditions can change and things go wrong! Cheers. Liz

Singapore tugs - there own rules , Glad to see you have made it safe . Raffles Marina is worth a visit.
👍👍👍Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.
I'm getting the sense that you are lovin' the dodger.
You have excellent ESP... Liz
Good show, Thank you.
lovely episode.
thanks a heap.
That Millie is one coo-oo-l cat.

Sooyi can't help , love your work its hurt me, but i still here, sorry

Oh yes, that smell! Liz
Like driving on the wrong side of the road....on the Washington 495 beltway at dinner time. Tricky!
Tricky, that's for sure! Liz
Great watch, thanks!! Are the cargo ship captains - bridge crew - English speaking if you contact them via radio? Thumbed!!
Mostly, yes, although I did once try a conversation with a skipper who insisted I talk to him in bahasa. Needless to say it didn't last long!
Ahhhh piece of cake for you pros
It was OK in the end, but I defy anyone not to be slightly nervous doing it! Liz
Crossing the Singapore Straight seems a little like that old video game "Frogger" 🐸
I'm not familiar with the game, but I'll take your word for it! 🐸🐸🐸

Something was dropped from port side of a ship named Cavalla at 16:53
Damn plastic trash bag...

At 10:04, someone throws something overboard.. looked like trash.
Yes, we saw it, but no idea whether it was intentionally thrown over. Wouldn't be surprised though. 🙄 Liz
What was the name of the Malaysian marina with the helipad?
Sebana Cove, Johor
If Millie were any more chill she'd slip into a coma.
@Peter Rahill meow
Just spat my coffee out, 😂 bankers
😄😄😄
Excellent video as always- Shame about the development south of Sebana. More Millie please, less sailing interludes
Haha! Millie is the best. 💛 Liz
I don't think Millie wants to interlude.
She loves it... Liz
#cat would drive viewers.
Was wondering...at what point will you be in "virgin" seas, those seas where you have never sailed before?
Well, the Java Sea was new for us, and the southern Indian Ocean. When we headed to Borneo from Anambas it was new, and from hereon (real time) it will all be new! 😃🙏 Liz

It also looks similar to a Egyptian ankh symbol.

Haha, yes: do you not find sailing exciting enough as it is?
Haha....was that the "T" word in the beginning , or do I need to have my ears syringed again.
👍or 😣
'Trepidatious'? Liz
Do You know where your going, it takes you weeks to do a few clicks. By the time yer get back to Essex ill be 105..!!
I am sorry but there is nothing humble about plastic, It is in every thing!
I think 'humble' from the point that it is cheap and ubiquitous...
