I'm binge watching your videos. They've all been very helpful. And this one has told me that I'm not a bad crocheter for wrapping the yarn twice around my index finger, lol. Thanks for that!
I've crocheted for a long time and it never occurred to me to hold my yarn a different way. But I'm working on a shawl with fine yarn and size E hook and my DC kept coming out loopy and inconsistent. Using your method of wrapping around the pinkie has made my little stitches much more consistent. THANKS!
Wow! I’ve been crocheting on & off for quite awhile & I always wondered why my stitches were inconsistent! Great info! I just found your videos tonight & they have already helped me so much. Thank you!!!!
This helped me SO MUCH! I''m just now learning, and was definitely way too tight. Wrapping around my pinky lets my yarn hand relax, which helps everything. Thank you!
Your suggestions are very helpful to beginners like me. In my case, wrapping my index finger twice works well probably because I have small hands. Thank you. 😊
Can you please explain how to use the stitch markers, I always end up with one less stitch and my projects. Where should marker be placed when starting the next row.
Thanks for your question! I briefly cover stitch markers in this video and I've cued it up for you: ua-cam.com/video/B9lvDPesFqQ/v-deo.htmlm1s. Loosing stitches happens at the beginning or end of a row. If the beginning, you are skipping the first stitch. This is usually with single and half double stitches. If you're losing at the end of the row, then you are missing the last stitch. This is easy to do if you are doing double crochet and don't work into the top of the turning chain as your last stitch. I address this here: ua-cam.com/video/W-mvxKm_v2Q/v-deo.htmlm30s. Once you figure out if you are missing the first or last stitch, you can place your marker where you won't miss it, like in the top of the ch 3 or the last stitch of the row that becomes the first stitch in the next row. Hope that I explained that well. Does that answer you question? :)
Sorry it's taken me a while to respond but your comment ended up in the "likely spam" folder. I really don't know why. To answer your question, I don't find that it gets tangled for me. If it does for you, try wrapping the yarn around the pinky in the other direction. It may be getting caught on itself.
I am self taught and have recently been watching videos on common mistakes for self taught crochet. I learned a few things I was doing incorrectly, and have fixed those, but I am still struggling with holding the yarn. The way the feels most comfortable to me gives great control, but I have an issue with my yarn. The ones I buy are not in a ball so I am curious as to whether I am using the correct end (or beginning of the string). There is an end end that goes around the top, and and end that I use to start pulls through the middle which I find easyer because I don't have to worry about the skein of yarn rolling. But the problem is that it causes a lot of tenstion so I end up having to move my index finger in a circle feed more yarn through. It should pull through and glide much simpler, but I have to pull on it from the skein which I think causes more tention. Is there an easier way to do this?
I like to pull from the middle too. Although, I have the same issue as you unless I keep pulling out a bit as I work. My tension is much better when I don’t have the skein adding more tension.
My problem is that i hold my pointer finger too high , therefore making me miss the yarn everytime, are there any tips on holding the yarn lower so the hook catches every stitch?,,, im finding that if i move the left hand farther from the hook seems to lower it so far.
If you are generally consistent, your rows and columns will be consistent. If you tend towards inconsistencies, your finished product will reflect that. Pro-tip: launder your finished project. It'll smooth out minor mistakes.
You mean if you do a chain of 22. Do not go through the first stitch, but the next stitch making it really a chain of 21 an uneven number?!? Correct!!?
I hold my yarn the same way that you show here, but I have a terrible time getting the yarn to slide freely through my hand. I have tried to find different ways to hold the yarn but haven't found anything that I like. It just seems like the yarn is constantly getting stuck and I'm having to tug on it to move it over my hand.
Try wrapping the yarn around the index finger of your non-dominant hand(twice). And then hold it loosely with your thumb and middle finger. It works for me. Doesn't get tangled either.
They are very affordable and easy to find. The material of the hook is mostly a preference. Many of mine are aluminum. The ones with comfort grip handles might be stainless steel.
Forever Bliss Crochet I doubt you will even see my comment but I hold my yarn like this I grip the yarn with my pinky. Thread the yarn between my ring and middle finger and throw the yarn over my pointer finger.?
Hi... Your video shows twice the sign that says "if you need to loosened your tension"... You don't have one that says "if you need to tighten your tension"... Just let you know...

This advice of the use of the left hand feeding the yarn Wa go GREAT value to me. Thank you 😊
Omg the double loop around my index finger is soooooo much better, thank you!
Thank you! You just saved my friend from a crochet nightmare!
My tension technique is trash, feel like i have tried everything. Always get loose stitches or too tight..😣
I always have holes in my work. My favorite is amigarumi and it always has wholes.
This helped me SO MUCH! I''m just now learning, and was definitely way too tight. Wrapping around my pinky lets my yarn hand relax, which helps everything. Thank you!
Thank you! The pinky wrap is fantastic -- I had been having so much trouble with finding a comfortable hold.

The most helpful tension video! Thank you!
I found using a Norwegian knitting thimble sorted me out right away. Feeding it through the two loops has helped me maintain tension.
I’ve wondered about those things!
cant wait to try this out tonight!!! im left handed
LOVE it!!! I hold the yarn same as you do, and it really works :)
I can't seem to pick up speed. Do you have any tips?
Very helpful for me, my hand's are a bit shaky. Thank you sue UK

Like this video,,, im gonna use method #3,,, but how do you keep from getting yarn tangled under the pinky and flowing from the skein?

Helped a lot!! Thank you!!
I use a little special ring on my pinky to control tension no problem...
super.thankyou so much.

I remember trying this at school :D
my wool always loosens on my hook now what do I do please help me i am 64 yrs old trying to crochet.
I'll try but im not very confident. I been crocheting many years have tried many things but my tension is my crochet issue
I have a question. If you make chains that are one even, will the rows be uneven
+Danielle Mosley Sorry, I'm not sure what you are asking. Perhaps a typo/autocorrect in the question?

Why do I see so many people doing crochet on UA-cam using those coloured aluminium hooks? Are they the best?
They are very affordable and easy to find. The material of the hook is mostly a preference. Many of mine are aluminum. The ones with comfort grip handles might be stainless steel.
I cannot hold tension to save my life! I've tried so many ways and cannot seem to get the yarn to just slide through.
Same!!!! And ive been doing this for years and feel like a failure. My work always has gaps..
@@jessies3236 They say practice makes perfect but I am not so sure about that lol! Happy Holidays
No matter how I try, holding my pointer up is soo uncomfortable. I hold with my pointer & thumb, then control with my middle finger.
Interesting. I'm so amazed at the genius ways people find to make this work. Thanks for sharing!
My left hand hold is... Non of the above. XD
hii very good elif crochet
Hello good morning I would like your permission to share your video in a Facebook crochet group... I would really appreciate it
Yes, you can. Thank you for asking.
Forever Bliss Crochet thank you very much I really appreciate it
How do you maintain your tension?
Forever Bliss Crochet I doubt you will even see my comment but I hold my yarn like this I grip the yarn with my pinky. Thread the yarn between my ring and middle finger and throw the yarn over my pointer finger.?
+Alyssa Coggins Sounds good to me! Whatever method gives you consistent tension is the one for you. Thanks for sharing 😊
I wrap the yarn around my pointer finger twice and then hold the ball end of the yarn with my middle finger and thumb
