I think my problem is understanding where to crochet the last stitch....if that makes any sense? I'm great at making baby hats, little sandals etc..but when it comes to making blankets, it always ends up wider or shorter! The video gave me some great tips. Thank you!
That's great... I am glad this video helped and your problem totally makes sense and is normal... just keep counting and practicing and you will get there!
I just began and i was told to use "markers" to help me with the last stitch. I didnt use them! until I was half way done, and my blanket had widen! Ah!
Thank you a lot for this video. Just today I did a cat beanie for my mom and I noticed that each row seemed wider than the other, and when i got to finish I saw that the end was wider than the start. This video helped me a lot!!
You are a Godsend! I repeated the first 5 rounds of a pattern I'm working on over ten times and for the life of me could not figure out why the stitch counts were always increasing by 1. Thank you so much! Your tutorial is fantastic!
No wonder you are called the crochet guru. I've learned so much from your videos and this video helped me really helped me understand. Thank you so much
Because your stitches are all too tight. Loosen up your stitches. Make them looser than you think is "normal" and they will probably be just right. Relax you shoulders and your hands. There should be no tight tension when you are crocheting. xoxo
Same! I am an amateur and tried crocheting a baby beanie yesterday and it turned out so messed up! As i went on, the beanie became smaller and smaller, as if i keep on decreasing it. Geez it was awful!
Thank you so much for the video, my Afghan was getting very wide. I am new at crocheting. Now I understand when turning around and starting on the second stitch. Thank you😊
This was very helpful. I've been crocheting for 60 years. I have developed cataracts and my vision has become distorted. This was a perfect reminder to go back to the basics to correct issues. Thanks so much!!!!
First my work was getting wider, then I’d redo it and it got narrower! I finally learned to stick with granny squares and granny cluster blankets, then no problems!
I think you forgot to mention the problem of ending in the wrong place. You can accidentally pick up an extra stitch at the end of the row and it will widen your piece as well.
Thanks for all the information... but is there anything that can be done to correct a slanted blanket (without unwinding) Like perhaps putting some stitches going up or down the side, where it’s slanted If that makes any sense
Thank you so much for all your exceptional instructions. Clear and concise. You’ve helped me improve my beginner crochet skills in just a matter of days by watching and demonstrating your video techniques. I appreciate you and the time you take to teach us crochet. Your work is gorgeous! Be well and blessed.
Best video ever! I just started crocheting and everyone of my first three projects kept doing this! I felt like such a failure at something so fun and simple. Your tips are perfect! I think I was doing all of the above, lol. Eternally greatfull. 😉
Thank you so much! I increased the size of my hook just for the starting chain and it fixed it the issue of my work always getting wider - I’m delighted! Thank you!
Oh my gosh this was so helpful!! I’m a fairly new beginner and all of my clothing attempts have always been flared and it’s so upsetting! But I just got out of bed to test out using a bigger hook vs not for the chain and IT WORKS I can’t believe I didn’t think of that!! Super helpful video💖💖
Thank you very much. These tips are extremely helpful. I need to make a blanket and these will help me keep everything even. The first blanket I did was hilarious 😂.
Seriously, thank you for your tips. That helps a lot!!! In many project videos I watch they don't clearly specify where should I start my first stitches, and with your explanation now I know, so THANK YOU!!!
I haven't been able to get my sides straight! 😣 l am doing even # PhD chains 20 or 22 then a row of 1/2 double, then the rest of the rows singles, double, then skip a chain. Shld end with a single, ch 1 & start over. I have watched numerous tutorials! Taken my work out atleast 5 times! No matter what l do it just doesn't come out right! Any suggestions, besides quitting, going to classes or pulling my hair out, wld be greatly appreciated!! 😭
I just wanted to say thank you! I made a HUGE blanket about the size of two queen beds pushed together and had this horrible problem. I stopped about 9 skeins in. Will eventually continue it- however I paused that to make a little comforter for my daughters mini-crib and it was so wide I had to unravel over half the work. Loose stitches/tight chain! Thank you so much! Now my daughter will have a beautiful blanket!
Funny, I've been crocheting about 3 yrs now and don't think of myself as a beginner more intermediate even beginner advanced and I still make beginner mistakes. I haven't watched one of these very helpful and well-done tip videos in years but I have to say it's so easy to get into bad habits and thanks to videos like these it's so easy to find our way back into good habits. Well done video
There are also typical issues at the end of rows (missing the previous turning chains, confusing stitches with the turning chain, etc) that can cause widening or shrinking of the work.
Thank you for the great video. I always get hung up on single crochet turn, so thanks for clearing that up for me. I really enjoy your style. I look forward to your other videos.
Great video! All beginners should watch similar videos before going mad or giving up this beautiful, artistic craft. And all tutorials should include specific, basic tips per tutorial and/or specific design. Sloppy or incomplete tutorials are truly a nuisance and bothersome, and surely no one here wants to waste time practicing and undoing half-hour’s worth of crocheting because they messed up one stitch or one row somewhere due to poor instructions. I guess bad tutorials goes hand-in-hand with “free tutorials”. I think a good tip is taking notes while crocheting as a beginner and writing any question that comes along from omitted instructions, then searching for specific answers/tutorials.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH I have watched so much videos and non of them are good they are all confusing but the one you did is so useful thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now THIS is a REALLY hI was wondering if that would help... I did not want to cut my too tight foundation chain. And I did not want to frog all the rows in long scarf I had already crocheted (7 feet long). Funny thing is, when I started this scarf, I DID use a hook 3 times larger than the project hook. Go figure. Thanks for this easy fix!!!
I have kept correct # of stitches. My Afghan goes wide diagonally. I'm working with a blanket using bobbins. The pattern is called bubble up baby blanket. Can. You help?
I'm having the opposite problem. The bottom or the starting row of my project is wider and it's getting narrower as I move upwards . How can I fix it? I'm a beginner and it's my first project so I'm getting a little confused.
Any advice for those of us who get “mesmerized” by two different stitches in a large project? I say the right stitch to myself, but my mind wanders and I end up having to re-do!
Mine was perfectly fine but at the end when you close the end of a cat beenie the top became waaayy larger and I don't know what I'm doing wrong... This is my 3th attempt.. 😭😭
My problem is that my baby blanket started with 109 stitches...my blanket is becoming narrower...I now have 51 double stitch instead of my original 109 stitches...help please!!!😣😣😣
Linda - Try looking at the first few rows or your blanket. You should be able to see if you crocheted into the very first stitch (and last). Then go up to the top and check the first and last stitches to see if you missed going into those ones. Hope that helps. Sometimes taking pictures of those sections and showing them to someone else, they can spot what went wrong. : )
Should add It can also happen if you forgot which hook size you used. (I did this when working on multiple projects) made the blanket become uneven. Tip for this “write down “ the hook size you use for each project.
Yeah this is a really good tip. I'm a crochet veteran and writing the hook size down on either the pattern you are using or on the yarn label is so helpful if you aren't going to get back to your project for a while.
Thank you! This saved one of my crochet projects. It actually was the opposite, it was narrowing. I didn't know that for single crochet you had to crochet into the same stitch.
So with this being said… I have about half a blanket stitched up and noticed the beginning end is shorter…. Can I go to the beginning and pull that all out and keep going on the other end? Or should I just pull it all out and start over? I could be stitching into the wrong row at my ends… I don’t think so though? I’m not sure
I am making a shell stitch poncho. It seems that it's getting longer. It seems like it's not getting wider. I am on the 13th row. Am I just being impatient? Is there a way to build out the sides and keep the front length? It is for and 8 year old.
I personally never count the turning chain as a dc. I'd rather have a small bump at alternating edges from the turning chain than try to put a dc on the top of the previous row's ch 3.
I’m confused. So in a video I watched recently that talks about how to make edges straight no matter what stitch you use the person in the video said you always need to do the next stitch in the stitch next to the turning chain, not in the turning chain. In this video she was demoing this technique with a single crochet. Was she mistaken, or not? Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/EWxM8bA_yY4/v-deo.html
I am working on crochet rug with single crochet stiches but every row the width keep increasing 1 cm although the overall rug looks even from the sides and the stiches are the same numbe and I am counting the turning chain as the first stich, how can I fix that
It keeps turning into a rainbow shape when I’m trying to crochet a square or blanket and idk how to stop it I tried to crochet looser but it’s still turning to a rainbow or a u shape
i’m making bernat handcraft cotton summer totes crochet bag with cotton yarn and my pattern is ch 77 1hdc in the third ch from the hook, then second row is ch 1 1sc in each hdc , third row ch2 1hdc in each sc but the stitches gets less the further i do but i do all as above but only do 1ch and work in first stitch in each row but one side is going inwards and other outwards but i have the same amount of stitches is there anyone to help me?
I'm pretty new to crochet and was getting a bit frustrated over this exact problem. So glad you made this video and I found it! Definitely going to give these a try! :o)
My 1. Burning!!🔥 Question is where in the World!! did you get my Jacked!!! Up Lopsided Leaning Tower of a Crochet Square from bcuz that Green Leaning Tower of a Crochet Square is Identical!!! To what I made and the only Difference is My Jacked!! Up Square is Red and I'm Really Surprised that Nobody got Nautious🤮 just looking at it 🤣
Fishy Fish It frustrates me!!! I made a baby blanket for a friend and the start is very wide. So maybe we are making the chain more loose and then tightening?
That is exactly what I think is happening. I just frogged almost a half of a baby blanket. and as I got closer to the wide area, I could see the stitches get looser, and it was easier to pull apart.
My problem is the couple opposite my rows start out longer and then get shorter. I think it's the way I am doing turning chain, not sure. Don't really shows till I do a few rows. What am i doing wrong? Great Video, does really help thanks
Thank you so much! I am new to making things where shape counts - and I think I have done everything as you describe in terms of making my crochet longer! I will now try to follow your tips. Thank s for being so generous : )
Good video, still working on it. The problem I'm having now is project is losing stitches, lol, started out as 70 chns, crocheting in 2nd ch from hook (sc) - now halfway through and after adding different stitches to the project, I'm now counting 45 stitches and project is getting smaller. I'm thing I'm losing count somehow, by adding the other stitches. Please advise. Thank you 😌
I have a question, I'm crocheting a blanket ..in each chain I do 3 double crochet. It's a cool pattern..my issue is by row 60 I'm supposed to measure 66 inches. I'm knit measuring 31 inches. Is my tension causing it to be do different in height? What am I doing wrong ? And at this point do I continue crocheting until the height of my blanket measures 66 inches?please advise...I live your channel, it's great as I'm a beginner and am learning so much from you. Thank you❤️❤️❤️
I'm a beginner crocheter using single stitch and I've had that problem while making a blanket for my boyfriend but barely now that I've gotten the hang of things I have a blanket that's 4 different colors alternating in a nice pattern
John Sun you're skipping a stitch somewhere. Maybe at the ends? If you're double crocheting, don't forget to stitch into your chain three because that counts as a double crochet stitch. Always count your stitches before going on to the next row.
Very helpful. I am a self-taught new crocheter. I know my problem is starting in the wrong stitches of the new rows. Now that I know what causes it, I will be conscious of it. But, since most of the afghan is done, is there a fix, besides ripping it out? I only noticed it when I actually folded it instead of just putting it in a pile. :(
This video was helpful. Before I had always had the project wider and shorter. And my double crochet always comes out wider. Thank you for posting this video.
This is a very helpful video, thank you. I have ripped out half of the blanket that I am making in moss stitch with size 7 yarn two times! It keeps getting wider. I am so frutrated. I will try your tips. I all ready use markers every 10 stitches, but I have been doing the first stitch in the turn around spot, which I thought was correct.
Is there any way fix the blanket after I have already completed many rows? I am pretty sure my issue was my initial chain was way too tight but now I am days into the project and don't want to start over but don't want to keep going either if it is just going to keep getting wider. What can I do to fix it? Help plz!
Can someone please help me. I have a problem with my afghan getting narrow and smaller and wavy as I move up to crochet. I've tried to adjust in so many ways but it doesn't help. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Oh boy - adding extra stitches became a real problem for me with my 1st zig zag afghan. The two you skip at the bottom take away the three you add at the top - except for the ends. My mom used it for the cat bed, and still does....30 years later! Ha!
I have the opposite problem, I'm just starting out and the practice piece I'm working on went from 11 to 8, I'm making a ton of mistakes on it but it's really just to get comfortable before trying anything else
My question is unrelated to your specific video, but I'm trying to find someone who can help me with finding ideas on how to take an extra long crocheted blanket and dividing it in half to square it up possibly?
I think my problem is understanding where to crochet the last stitch....if that makes any sense? I'm great at making baby hats, little sandals etc..but when it comes to making blankets, it always ends up wider or shorter! The video gave me some great tips. Thank you!
That's great... I am glad this video helped and your problem totally makes sense and is normal... just keep counting and practicing and you will get there!
Jessika8206 yes I'm having same problem
Me too!
I just began and i was told to use "markers" to help me with the last stitch. I didnt use them! until I was half way done, and my blanket had widen! Ah!
Or I’ll
THANK YOU! I've taken my project apart 3 times because of this! You are fantastic at explaining things quickly and easily! Again thank you!
2017, I hope my projects become 'symmetrical'. :).. thank you for the GREAT video... .I am a visual learner and this was GREAT!
I think I'm your twin! :-))
I am mostly self taught, and I would have appreciated this video YEARS ago. I learned all of these mistakes through experience. Keep it up!
Thank you a lot for this video. Just today I did a cat beanie for my mom and I noticed that each row seemed wider than the other, and when i got to finish I saw that the end was wider than the start. This video helped me a lot!!
i m making this exact project and am running into the SAME problem, 3rd try is the charm!
You are a Godsend! I repeated the first 5 rounds of a pattern I'm working on over ten times and for the life of me could not figure out why the stitch counts were always increasing by 1. Thank you so much! Your tutorial is fantastic!
I Started with crochet tutorils for beginners nd youtube recommended me this video... Yotube knew... UA-cam knew tht i would need this video...
No wonder you are called the crochet guru. I've learned so much from your videos and this video helped me really helped me understand. Thank you so much
Well for me its getting tighter 😭 i have no idea why !!
Because your stitches are all too tight. Loosen up your stitches. Make them looser than you think is "normal" and they will probably be just right. Relax you shoulders and your hands. There should be no tight tension when you are crocheting. xoxo
Yeah...my Afghan keeps getting narrower. Help.
madison245, me too
Sameee
Same! I am an amateur and tried crocheting a baby beanie yesterday and it turned out so messed up! As i went on, the beanie became smaller and smaller, as if i keep on decreasing it. Geez it was awful!
Excellent tips. I know I am guilty of all the problems, I will continue to practice
Hope you have had your cataracts done now and improved sight, 60 years of experience is amazing x
Very helpful, thank you. I noticed my first project was getting wider and I looked up a video immediately to see what I may have done wrong.
First my work was getting wider, then I’d redo it and it got narrower! I finally learned to stick with granny squares and granny cluster blankets, then no problems!
I like to both crochet and knit !
I think you forgot to mention the problem of ending in the wrong place. You can accidentally pick up an extra stitch at the end of the row and it will widen your piece as well.
If I make this mistake, is there a way to fix it along the way or do I have to restart and fix from the beginning? Thanks for this helpful vid!!
I so definitely needed this video!! Thank you! Merry Christmas & God bless you
Thanks for all the information... but is there anything that can be done to correct a slanted blanket (without unwinding)
Like perhaps putting some stitches going up or down the side, where it’s slanted
If that makes any sense
Thank you so much for all your exceptional instructions. Clear and concise. You’ve helped me improve my beginner crochet skills in just a matter of days by watching and demonstrating your video techniques. I appreciate you and the time you take to teach us crochet. Your work is gorgeous! Be well and blessed.
What if my crochet project gets narrower?
Mabye its vice versa
That's what happened to my recent project
Thank you!! After watching 7 or so videos, yours was the most helpful explanation about this issue that I found!!
Best video ever! I just started crocheting and everyone of my first three projects kept doing this! I felt like such a failure at something so fun and simple. Your tips are perfect! I think I was doing all of the above, lol. Eternally greatfull. 😉
Mine is actually wider on the bottom
And getting smaller while crocheting.
Same!!!
That it because your going loose first, then slowly going tighter. Maybe try to make a tension regulator.
Thank you so much! I increased the size of my hook just for the starting chain and it fixed it the issue of my work always getting wider - I’m delighted! Thank you!
Excellent tip, I do mine the other way round. But I will definitely try your tip.
I have something for you so knock on door
Seriously, thank you for your tips. That helps a lot!!! In many project videos I watch they don't clearly specify where should I start my first stitches, and with your explanation now I know, so THANK YOU!!!
This is a lifesaver. I always have this issue! 😩
Thank You. Still trying new projects crocket . I learn easy start hook crocket L. Still learn new style patterns.

That’s a great help, thank you
Very helpful! Thank you very much...I’ve been crocheting for three years and I still need help!so thank you.
I'm so glad!
Usually, to prevent this problem, I just throw in a whole layer or two of singles :p
I have the same problem what can I do ..I'm making my first blanket
Nice video!! I'm sharing it with my granddaughter, who is a beginner and good at taking instruction.
I have kept correct # of stitches. My Afghan goes wide diagonally. I'm working with a blanket using bobbins. The pattern is called bubble up baby blanket. Can. You help?
How do you fix the project that you’ve increased stitches?
I'm having the opposite problem. The bottom or the starting row of my project is wider and it's getting narrower as I move upwards . How can I fix it? I'm a beginner and it's my first project so I'm getting a little confused.
Any advice for those of us who get “mesmerized” by two different stitches in a large project? I say the right stitch to myself, but my mind wanders and I end up having to re-do!
My biggest problem is finding and crocheting into the final stich before I go to the next row
So I have a blanket 48 rows long, but it's a trapezoid. Is there a sneaky fix? The shower I'm making it for is this weekend.
I’m having two problems it looks like I’m having three problems my grip adding stitches because I can’t see my ending stitches
I have a problem with making baskets, especially large ones. Looks like the sides of my baskets are now way larger than the base. Help😫😫😫😫😫
This has helped so much. I'm looking forward to re- starting again now
How can we fix it when we have a large project and Halfway through discover it's off square.
How do we fix it?
Thanks, i was using stitch markers but it was still extending. double stitch positioning was my issue. Thanks
Should add It can also happen if you forgot which hook size you used. (I did this when working on multiple projects) made the blanket become uneven. Tip for this “write down “ the hook size you use for each project.
Yeah this is a really good tip. I'm a crochet veteran and writing the hook size down on either the pattern you are using or on the yarn label is so helpful if you aren't going to get back to your project for a while.
love our tutorials, they help me get back into crocheting after decades since I first learned in home ec class!
I want to make a twin blanket with straight edge

I made a beanie which fitted comfortably as I worked however after working the edging it wouldn't fit please how do I correct this?
It keeps turning into a rainbow shape when I’m trying to crochet a square or blanket and idk how to stop it I tried to crochet looser but it’s still turning to a rainbow or a u shape
Hii
As per ur 2nd suggestion. If I don't crochet in turning chain it cause work to shrink.. again it will be uneven
i’m making bernat handcraft cotton summer totes crochet bag with cotton yarn and my pattern is ch 77 1hdc in the third ch from the hook, then second row is ch 1 1sc in each hdc , third row ch2 1hdc in each sc but the stitches gets less the further i do but i do all as above but only do 1ch and work in first stitch in each row but one side is going inwards and other outwards but i have the same amount of stitches is there anyone to help me?
Oh my god, this makes so much more sense thank you so much 💙💜❤️
I'm pretty new to crochet and was getting a bit frustrated over this exact problem. So glad you made this video and I found it! Definitely going to give these a try! :o)
I am glad it helped and thank you for your comment!
thankyou so much for this video! very helpful:)

i was doing sc and i was wondering why it kinda looked like a trapezoid
turns out I was chaining 2 each time
Are you able to tell me why mine is actually wider in the beginning? :(
Fishy Fish It frustrates me!!! I made a baby blanket for a friend and the start is very wide. So maybe we are making the chain more loose and then tightening?

My problem is the couple opposite my rows start out longer and then get shorter. I think it's the way I am doing turning chain, not sure. Don't really shows till I do a few rows. What am i doing wrong? Great Video, does really help thanks
I was wondering if it had anything to do with the type of yarn or fabric being used because some fabric stretches more than others
So i have to restart, is what youre saying. 😭😭
This happened to me and im so surprised because my stitches count is exactly the same!
Around scarf gives me a headache,,will try this out thanks
VERY good video and instructions! I sometimes do this making a scarf 🧣 Thank you so much ☺️
Can you weave yarn through the part that got to wide to pull it end to keep from havi g to undo all of those rows.
She said for SC, put the hook in the FIRST chain (i.e. turning chaIN').
Thank you❤️❤️❤️
My problem is #2! I get so confused about first stitch, second stitch....
I'm a beginner crocheter using single stitch and I've had that problem while making a blanket for my boyfriend but barely now that I've gotten the hang of things I have a blanket that's 4 different colors alternating in a nice pattern
By me, the Afghan blanket gets narrower than what I started. Whet am I doing wrong?
John Sun you're skipping a stitch somewhere. Maybe at the ends? If you're double crocheting, don't forget to stitch into your chain three because that counts as a double crochet stitch. Always count your stitches before going on to the next row.
You are the best! Thank you for sharing! It takes time to make quality videos. You're very generous. Thank you!
Thanks so much... you just made my day!
Mine has gone from big to small - any suggestions welcome
Thanks! This is helpful. I think I am obliterating my turn chain.
My crochet project get narrow, how can I understand?
Help plz!
I usually rip it out - no matter how long I've been working on a project. If it doesn't look right - I bite the bullet, rip it out/start over...
My crochet project keeps getting longer with every row?
this is a great tutorial. I have this problem and you've provided a few suggestions which I will try. Thanks again 🙂
