Hell yeah coconut husks!! After seeing you use husks, and switching mine to mostly husks, not only do I not rot my plants as much but the roots just grow like crazy with so many little root hairs. So bright white and fuzzy, happy and healthy!

Thank you for this thorough explanation! You answered all my questions. I was curious about how it would affect nutrients/fertilizing and was glad to see that you touched on that. I already use husk in my mix so I’d like to give it a try. The simplicity of being able to propagate right into the medium is a huge selling point for me and I’m definitely going to experiment with it!
I've been using chunky soilmix with husks for a while now in my hoyas, but never understood why they did well in that medium. So i learned a lot just from this video. Thank you!!!

I just received my order of coco chips from your store. I look forward to moving a few of my hoyas into it immediately. I was hesitant to use straight husks in arid Montana, but I think, with coir, it will work out. And I look forward to receiving the rest of my order - my first plant order from you. :)

Hi April! I love using coco husks on my support poles for my climbing plants because sphagnum moss is expensive 😅 And when I finally decided to get sphagnum moss, I mix it with coco husks so I get both benefits of the chunkiness and airiness of the husks and the moisture retentive properties of moss while saving me some money because I don't use up all the moss so fast.
Lately, I've been using the mix not just for the poles but also as a propagating and potting medium - so far so good.

April, I had been wanting to try my Hoyas in coco husks and after watching your video I started to switch my Hoyas over to your coco husks that I purchased from your store- they are all thriving and doing so well. I'm seeing so much new growth & healthy roots. I'm so glad I made the switch to coco husks. I'm a "hovering plant parent " & using husks help to not over water my Hoyas. They love it. Please make more videos- I loved your Hoya trellising video also. Very helpful. 🪴🌱 edited: I do have a question on the Hoya Multiflora

Hi April... first off, you've been putting out some great, well done videos... even for a veteran Hoya grower, I've learned some new things and really enjoy them. I just bought some of your coco husk as I'm going to start to transition some of my more picky Hoyas over. This is just so simple and much easier/cheaper than putting together all these different substrate mixes. Like you say everyone has their own methods and different environments but if we meet the 3 most basic needs of Hoyas we should have success growing our collections. Seems the invisible flat mites are going round.... have you noticed any difference or ease in treating pests (soil or otherwise) in coco husk as compared to soil or other substrates? A pest video would be nice.... I do preventive maintenance on my Hoyas as I have so many. The only concern I have is the coco husk drying out too fast in normal home conditions. All of mine are grown in the house with natural light and plant lights, I try to keep the humidity at 60 to 65%, maybe less in the hot summer months, have an overhead fan going and the temp is about 70-72. I'm having to water about once a week now but do notice the plants I buy in husk or in a very airy mixture need to be watered more. Thanks.

I live in Western Oregon, and rely most on my own pon mix. Pumice, horticultural sand and volcanic rock. The results are amazing! I had some in coconut husks that never quite did well long term, switched em to my pon, and now they’re like different plants that are flourishing. Maybe the climate and latitude make some kind of difference?
There’s many different factors we can consider. With pon, do you use reservoirs? Did you use reservoirs when you were using husks? They may be drying out too fast and we’re getting as much water as they want which can lead to dry rotting of roots and the plants declining.
I live in SW Washington. 2 of 3 hoya I’ve had in husk completely died. It dries out way, way too fast. I missed 1 watering and that’s all it took. It was pretty heartbreaking. I really liked both of them & they weren’t cheap. I’ll never use just coco husk. But it works well as an additive to a chunky mix

Your videos are awesome! I have learned more from you about growing Hoyas and how to trellis them than I have from any other UA-cam video. I now need to re-trellis my Krimson Queen. I had no idea what I was doing when I put her on a trellis and she looks pitiful! Thank you! I am going to switch to the coconut husk and maybe add some coco coir because I live in hot Arizona. Question: What is a good ratio for the husks and the coir?

Husks make me soo nervous, this was helpful! I’m still nervous about when to water though, how do you recommend knowing when to water with husk?
The weight of the pot is the best way for me to tell sometimes but that could be confusing for new users. If you’re using pure husk, as soon as you think the plant is dry (mostly looking at top husks), water it. It will soak up enough water again to slowly release to your roots overtime. Since it’s a very airy substrate, the roots wont be suffocated (assuming the plant is in an area with good air circulation)

Yes you can! I actually have some plants inside our house in a self watering pot with this mix 😊

Husks are chunks and coir is pure (like dust) ☺️
How did you move your plants from your “old” mix to coco husk? Did you remove the old mix or just add husk when you up potted? Also you use osmocote, but have mentioned adding magnesium and calcium. Do you use a liquid fertilizer for these micro nutrients?
I tried to remove as much old mix as I can but didn’t stress about it. Even if they still had a bit of soil and/or perlite, as long as the roots were loose, I potted them up in husk.
I use slow release and liquid fertilizer. Slow release because I’m bad at keeping up with fertilizing so even if I forget to use the liquid form, the plants are still getting something.
The magnesium and calcium I was talking about is from Cal-Mag Plus ☺️

Great information and love your detailed explanations! Question, what if I add some husks to my chunky soil mix? Would that hold too much moisture or just enough for the coming warmer months? Thanks and look forward to anyone's advice on this.
It will not hold too much. You’re going to be adding moisture but your mix should stay about the same as your current one is already chunky ☺️
Hi! As it is a medium that degrades over time, but the roots of the plants also grow in and through the chunks, how would one deal with repotting to fresh coco chips someday? Like when they start to break down and it’s time for fresh coco husk? Would love to hear how you deal with this! It’s the one thing holding me back from switching everything over to husk. Thank you so much in advance if you get the chance to answer!!
Easy! Either I don’t disturb the roots (since they have already made their network in the medium) and just add more husks/husks mix in the new pot or I shake the roots a bit to loosen any compacted areas of the rootball and just add some more of the new mix into the new pot 💚
@@unsolicitedplanttalks thank you so much!! But you know how plants potted in soil need to have all the medium replaced every so often? And coco husk breaks down after like a few years or something… like imagine I have a 4 or 5 year old Hoya that I keep up-potting in size like you’ve mentioned. What about like 4 years from now am I going to have rotting coco husks around the original stem area? Sorry this is so specific!! I’m just super worried to convert my whole collection fearing for the future if it eventually rots and degrades and then I have to restart all my plants. Totally new to this, hence I’m going straight to the best source :)

How often do u water with just coco husks? Assuming the Hoyas get good light.
I was using a peat based soil with mostly perlite and bark. It has killed all of my hoyas. Now, I am trying coco peat/husk and nothing has died. ;-;

Hoya lithophytica is possibly one that I wouldn't put in coco husk. It seems to really want extreme aeration and it grows on rocks in the wild, the minerals that the plants get from the rocks is something difficult to replicate in our care 😅 Our small leaf plants seem to love coco husk all the same!

Absolutely! All of our plants (young and mature) are all in coco ☺️

Is letting the pot sit in water 5-10 mins really enough to get everything wet enough?
Yes :) If it is mixed with coir, it will soak it up. if it is pure husk and has been dry for a while, you might want to water from top first to get them wet a bit and then bottom water :)

For reference I use a coco husk, perlite, bark, and a bit of charcoal and worm castings mix but I'm considering switching to pure coco husk now! lol

not really as long as you don't do it often. Here and there is fine. I do think your mix is good and no need to do pure husk! If I may recommend, continue what you have as that is a much healthier mix than just using husk. If you're worried about rot, lessen the amount of worm castings or even completely remove it if you'd like. Use slow release fertilizer if you don't have much time to fertilize your plants weekly as an alternative. Otherwise, even if you don't want to remove that. there's nothing wrong with it. :)

I have all my hoyas in potting soil and cactus mix, would my hoyas go into shock if I transfer them to coconut husk only?
No. I have been doing it and never had a problem. However, I don't strip the roots so even if it still has some soil or perlite on it, I just shake them lightly and pot with husks. The biggest shock that I could imagine is that it may dry out too quickly and you may not notice right away. Just keep up with watering change and you won't have a problem :)
