  • Why is my pond green?
You might be asking the same question as many people looking after ponds and pools. So let's ask a different question. Why do garden ponds go green in the first place, do fish ponds go green, or what causes ponds to go green?

    Answer: 10 - 14 Days, mostly!
It is its organic load on the system and the lack of plants. As you can see that this pond hasn't got any pond plants. So what's caused this fish pond to go green. It's the amount of fish in there or the number of nutrients in the pond. There is nothing helping mother nature to actually absorb these nutrients or process that available nutrients. This particular pond does not have any rocks and gravel (it basically got a bare liner). So there's not much surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and break down.
When you've got fish in a garden pond, they will eat mostly the zooplankton. Which eats the blanket weed and other algae. Which eats the algae, so the fish will eat a few algae, but they'll eat all of the zooplankton that feeds on the single-celled algae.
If you didn't have any fish and the balance was perfect. If you had a few plants, you probably wouldn't have any green in your pond. The reason why a fish pond goes green is that the fish are eating the zooplankton and also their dirty fish. So they actually produce a lot of pond waste. So if you feed the pond fish, you're feeding the green pond water as it's also putting in the trash. So that pond waste is not being used. The phosphates or the nitrates caused by the breakdown of the waste feeding the algae is why your pond is green!

It's sad to see a pond in a state like that. It amazes me how people don't understand how things work to together. That pond needs more circulation, more filtration, more rock, more plants. I am sure you will fix them up and get it straighten out. God bless 😊

Great advice. No fish pond or pool should look like this.

I don’t see any aeration in this pond. What’s going on?

Oh, pond advisor. Can you post a video on how to recharge zeolite please? Wether we need to use a specific Salt etc. Especially for us in the U.K. where there’s not much advice

I would love to, but I have not used zeolite for over ten years lol 😂

Great advice-how long does a uv filter take to clear the green water usually if you also have plants?

10-14 days but it will return very quickly if you switch it off and have not removed the nutrients

Hi , I’ve made a fairly small wildlife pond from a pre formed shell, unfortunately it does not have a slope for access , would it be safe to use play sand to form a bank ? I’ve been trying to research it and seem to get conflicting views . Thanks in advance and great video as always

Yes play sand is good, some are better than others

It’s a good thing it’s full of goldfish as they’re very hardy. Any other fish and they’d be dead.

Those are Koi. Goldfish don't have barbels. It's heartbreaking to see them gasping for air. I hate when people don't do proper research before getting living things. With all the professional people out there, there is no excuse. Even if they can't afford a professional, they can look it up on the internet at the library for free!!

@@sweetkoiyo ah, I hadn’t noticed the barbell. I just made the assumption as it would have been the only reasonable explanation why they’re still alive but now I’m extremely annoyed. Koi are expensive and prized possessions and they’re being treated this way, is a disgrace

100% without aeration in this old swimming pool (as a minimum, not only for oxygenation but to cool the water and block out a little light). Koi are not going to live very long, I am amazed they have lived this long. Even goldfish would need aeration at the very least, early mornings are the worst time of the day in green ponds.

Get some way to get rid of the alge

  • @timothyjorgensen7898

Too simplistic to be of any practical value (e.g., UV light just kills the algae producing even more organic waste).

Yes, bare liner (no surface area), lack of plants, lack of aeration, no filtration,
