I was feeling bored during the movie, but didn't fall asleep. And it was during the middle and even when Superman saves Lois, her son and his fiance from drowning and when Luthor fought Superman on the island. But I did remembering hearing my mother gasp when Luthor gave Superman the "final punch" when we saw the movie in IMAX.

Kingdom Come Superman in the Arrowverse proves that Routh can be a great Superman. He fucking nails it there. It actually made me feel a bit sorry for Tyler Hoechlin's Superman because Routh totally outshines him in every scene they're in. Routh just had really bad material to work with in Superman Returns.

An early script even had Lex reveal to a weakened Superman that he had one of his henchmen send false signals to set Superman up into space. Thus, making a completely defeated Superman realize he left Earth (left Lois) for nothing.

With as young as Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth were, they should've just redone the origin. Yes, we all know it to death. It is modern mythology at this point. But there's no way in hell you could believe that these two lived through the events of the first two Christopher Reeve films (including the ending of the Superman II Donner cut) with as young as they looked and believably say that five years had passed. Also, Superman lifting an entire island made of Kryptonite into space. WTF?!

You know there's something I realized after watching this movie and Bryan Singer's Xmen movies: He's pretty much the anti-Sam Raimi. Sam Raimi always tries really hard to have a unique style with his movies. Everything from the setting to the characters and the ways they act, all are going all out. With Sam Raimi's Spiderman movies or Evil dead movies, he makes sure that they're unforgettable experiences. Bryan Singer represents everything people like Raimi and Guillermo Del Toro are against: Bland set design, Lack of colour contrast, Bland costume and character designs, blandly shot scenes, and a very dull production design overall. The reason why Usual Suspects worked and his comic book films didn't is because Usually Suspects took place in the real world with no supernatural or cosmic elements. It was a story grounded in reality, so Bryan Singer could show off the world and it's interesting because of the concept of the film and the characters. He didn't need any real kind of expert production design to convey what he wanted for the fil..These comic book films he's done require a lot of imagination, a lot of special effects, a lot of colour contrast for environments and characters, etc. And because Singer is so uncreative in visuals, these films look incredibly bland and because of that aren't really engaging. That's why Usual Suspects worked, and films like this didn't. Usual Suspects didn't need that much imaginative imagery. Xmen and Superman do, and Singer is not good at that at all. Honestly I'm glad that Singer's sexual harassment shit has gotten him blacklisted , cause it's clear that he's not only a shitty person but a shitty filmmaker as well. I hope that when the MCU does the Mutants film that they can get someone opposite of Singer to make that film and bring the mutants to the MCU properly. Maybe they can bring Mathew Vaughn back from Xmen First Class. Or maybe just have Raimi do it. I also hope to God that Man of Steel 2 (if it happens) ends up being really good aswell.

    • @LinkMarioSamus
      @LinkMarioSamus Рік тому +4

@Black Ninja 17, if you go by Kate Bosworth's age during filming (22). Clark left 5 years ago, so the kid has to be no older than 5, if that. The actor playing him was also 5.
Brandon Routh was 25 during the shoot, so he'd have impregnated Lois when he was 19 and she was 16. James Marsden was 31, so he'd have been 25 when he first started sleeping with Lois, and she was 16.

The ending with Superman promising never to leave Earth again, Lois and his son becomes absurdly devastating 13 years later, when this version of the character returns in the crossover of Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths, and it is revealed that the Joker murdered Lois, Perry White. and Jimmy Olsen. I remember watching Superman Returns with my dad. We were both adults by then. I grew up watching the Reeves films, the Superfriends, and that cool Superboy show. Enjoyed Lois and Clark for the most part. Frog clones not withstanding.
My dad, however, watched George Reeve. He read the silver age of Superman growing up. Jimmy Olsen comics, Legion of Superheroes, Lois Lane, Worlds Finest, Justice League. If Supes was in it? My dad read it.
He saw Superman in the theaters. Said Reeves did a great job. Was not happy at all with Gene Hackman.
Said the cartoon Lex by Clancy Brown came closest, but he didn’t love the businessman aspect for whatever reason.
Yet, when Kevin Spacy’s Luthor shanked Superman in the back, my dad clapped and said, “that’s how you do Lex Luthor!”
He loved this movie. I actually do too. Wish a sequel was made. I was very happy to Brendon Routh get the epilogue his performance deserves.
Like the opening credits, he may have been too amazing for this movie.

Even stupider about him going off to find Krypton, if Krypton were still there pieces of kryptonite wouldn't be on earth. Planets that don't blow up don't send pieces of themselves off into space! On top of this, he gets his power from the the sun and stars are light years apart which means he would have run out of power and died in space long before he got anywhere near Krytpon.

The creators of the film appear to have had it in mind that Superman was to be a Christian Allegory or at-least an all-around boy-scout. This is kind-of undermined by how he turns out to be the father of Lois' child meaning he either slept with her without her knowing he was Clark, or Jason was conceived in Superman II and he impregnated her during the night they spent together which he erased from her memory-along with everything else-at the end of the film.

This film has a lot of issues I have with the Sequel Trilogy when it comes to the gap between the ending of Return of the Jedi and how TFA and TLJ just basically retcon everything into a new "Empire vs Rebellion" scenario, maybe even more cookie cutter than before, and just talks about who is who instead of doing new stuff, showing how the new villains rose in a different way than Palpatine and the character dynamics and development of Ben Solo before turning evil.
No, the films are afraid to do all that and prefer to imitate scenes from the old films hoping I'll just clap like a retarded seal performing to get a fish.

Superman is inherently difficult to write for because he's so powerful. A writer either instinctively knows how to bring out the heart or they don't. It doesn't help that Lex Luthor is kinda right, most people are not good and noble on a level like Superman which can make him so hard to relate to. I know if I had his power, I'd be doing stuff to put all the Superdickery to shame, I think most people would.

It's because the fandom is so divided that WB doesn't know how to please them. If you make Superman too flawed people bitch that he isn't enough of the "classic Boy Scout" he needs to be. But if you make him too perfect they complain he's too boring. And if you actually manage to nail it on your third try or something... WB takes away your film and gives it to the guy who wrote Alien Resurrection.

I'll still say Man of Steel was better. This film didn't feel like a Superman film... it felt like an homage to the Superman film. It's just the same as Force Awakens in rehashing the same plot but saying it's different. I guess Force Awakens was more entertaining so it got a pass.
