  • A perfect day to go fossil collecting along the Jurassic Coast. We are looking for iron pyrites ammonites washed out of the mudslides. How do i find fossils along the Jurassic Coast at low tide?- well i look for patches of iron pyrites. These heavy concentrations of "fools gold" on the beach often hold good little iron pyrites ammonites in them. The little ammonites are preserved in the iron pyrites which makes them" heavy " too .There is a fossil collecting code of conduct along the Jurassic Coast. You can see that online, look for ~”The West Dorset Fossil Collecting Code Of Conduct.” In this video I show you some ammonites I split out of some thin grey layered limestone rocks that break like slate. I wear protective eye wear /safety spectacles 👓 and sturdy gloves 🧤 when breaking the small right rocks on the beach. Remember to be aware of the tides and go out fossil hunting on the low tide. Stay away from the dangerous cliffs they are liable to fall suddenly and without warning. We run guided fossil collecting trips at Lyme Regis www.lymeregisfo...

Thanks very much I hope you get some good fossil finds. It looks like some early morning starts in conjunction with safe tide times . The mudslides are activated by all this rainy weather and are bringing fossils down onto the beach in places that the sea is washing out . You should get some fossil finds at low tide fingers crossed

A wonderful video, showing the beauty of the Dorset coast, it really is a magical place and thank you for posting up details of fossil walks, very important when considering how dangerous the tides can be.

Thanks very much indeed . That was the best sunset in early January I reckon . Now it’s very grey Winter weather and quite stormy at times .

Thanks 🙏 I got quite close to one of the calcite ammonites . Luckily it survived and it was a lovely piece . I will probably round up the rock and make it into a “ popping stone .”

what a lovely sunset. what kind of minimum weight would you suggest in a hammer for braking the rocks? I don't want to buy anything too heavy to lug around ;)

That’s a very good point some people use a 2.5 pound hammer but you can use just a small hammer . The small right rocks are often lovely shapes , so I just bring them back whole. They really aren’t very big the best rocks to break on the beach that wash out the mudslides. Some really round nodules I just know have something in so I get them in the rucksack and ship them back .

I make some jewellery out certain materials like Lyme Bay Agate. You can see that chalcedony in my other UA-cam videos . Some I leave for the kids to find and see on the beach. I do guided fossil walks at low tide along the Jurassic Coast.
