I have read all of Julia Quinn books before she became popular with the Netflix show. For 20 years or more I only read historical romances and love them.

That’s awesome Pat, I could see how they would be a beloved series to so many, it really was enjoyable

I only managed to read 3 books in this series before I DNF'd the series. I am glad you enjoyed the first book though 💙

@@Soniawithani the third book was the least interesting for me it is not the same as the tv series if you have watched that. I hope you enjoy it though 😊

I tried to read this book and gave up. I just couldn't get away from the fathers attitude to Simon.
Glad you enjoyed it. Can totally understand why bits of it were problematic.💙

I liked Downton Abbey and saw all the shows. But I'm not interested in this series. Weren't woman of society raised to have babies to produce the heir and spare?? (Hopefully they would take care of their mother in golden years??)

So many thoughts. Both Simon and Daphnes are horrible in this book. Simon for using and manipulating Daphne's ignorance about intercourse so that he could have her without having to face why he really doesn't want kids. Daphne for basically SAing Simon.
I CAN understand why having a child is so important to Daphne. 1. She comes from a large, happy family and wants that for herself. 2. As a woman in that time, her very identity as a woman is tied to her ability to have a child. The fault is always placed on tbe woman if a couple can't conceive, and a woman is viewed as damaged if they don't have a child. 3. A child also ensures economic security for her. Should Simon die before her, she needs an heir to ensure that the inheritance will not go to some other relative. And if he dies when they are older, she will have someone to take care of her as she ages.Ages.

@@emilyreads5207 I understand that as well, that the times dictated expectations of women much differently, and that it was primarily her “duty” to have children. Both parties were very wrong. This was the past of the book that lessened the enjoyment of it for me, the rest I thought was delightful. Thank you for your thoughts. 💙🦋

@@Soniawithani agreed that both parties were wrong. Personally, I liked Eloise and Francesca's story the best.
