I remember that rift or fallout between jack and dave o leary, Jack is correct in what he said and he was also correct to banish O Leary to the wilderness for a period of time, O Leary was quite insistent at the time that he had his holidays booked with his family and wasnt going to postpone it, so he had really nobody to blame but himself, he left jack with little choice as he would have undermined his authority if he let him get away with it, but it was great to see him return to the fold eventually of course and scoring that iconic penalty
He's a sound man Jack. Clearly he didn't like the attitude of a player choosing a week on Toremolinos over representing his country and i'm with Jack on that. When you have 4 or 5 other players to choose from, the guy who lacks commitment is always going to be last on the list. Despite that he talks about David in warm and generous terms and shows respect to David's abilities as a player and manager. Big Jack was a real gentleman behind it all.
Brian Clough always made sure he spent time with his children on holiday. He spoke to the legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson who cried on his daughter's wedding day as he had missed out on her growing up because of his commitment to football. Clough decided he would not do that as a father. O'Leary I think would have the same attitude.
Story I thought was that o Leary wasnt picked so he booked a holiday. Then a few dropped out but o Leary then declined the call up and didnt cancel the holiday. All due respect to McCarthy but o Leary was a better defender. 4 or 5 centre backs whatever it was I'm convinced jack held a grudge over it
O'Leary was an excellent, cultured defender. Jack Charlton preferred no-nonsense tough guys like McCarthy. George Graham did, too, which is why he replaced him with Steve Bould at Arsenal.
O'Leary was not selected for this Tournament, which I'm sure disappointed him. So, it was the off-season, he booked a family holiday. Charlton called him last minute due to injuries to go, he explained he was about to go on a booked family Holiday. Get the facts right Jack, and one of out greatest ever center-halfs didn't get a call for almost 3 years....Charlton was A Bully, and a liar.
And got us to Euro 88 as top in the group. Italia 90 , USA 94 . Robbed for 92 Euro’s . O Leary got the glory peno v Romania so did ok in end and Jack although obviously didn’t like David’s style was the greater person in Irish football
@@11ZFELIX hoof up manager but wasn't it effective ? Fair enough the Republic of Ireland had good players but big jack was a great motivator and manager and took the country to 7 th in fifa rankings, give credit where credit is due, they were our greatest football years bar none.
The man who made my childhood great, my cousins teenage years brilliant and my fathers time the best he ever had and can remember.

there's more to the story than that but yeah.
@@Cloud007. Cool story bro, thanks for telling us.
Not only that, he bore O"Leary no grudges and brought him back once the point was made with no drama or media circus.
Top man .
Family holidays should always come first .. especially over some silly Iceland tournament .
Kids grow up too fast
RIP Jack.
What TV programme/dvd does this come from? It would be great to watch the entire show.
Two Leeds greats
Big Jack!
Enough Said!!! 😎👍🥰
Straight talking man
Ireland could have had mark Lawrenson as well only for his career was ended by injury
Rip Jack Charlton,
But that was a mistake not playing David o leary he was one the best centre back in the world at the time
722 games for arsenal. won all domestic trophies. not much more you can do really.
Ireland must've had great centre backs to leave O'Leary out
Dave was right
Family holidays alway come first .
Kids grow up too fast
I would've chosen it as well, but he knew the consequences of the action.

Mick worked with Moran much better in defense .
He preferred Mick McCarthy over O’Leary. Not sure why.

Tbh I don't think we needed O'Leary we were well stocked in defence. Brady on the other hand was definitely treated bably by Jack.
& being a key player for Fatso Revie at Leeds United in the 70s, he was also a fucking cheat
Adrian Charlton wanted to hoof it and D O LEARY was a quality player. Charlton was a hoof it up merchant
