I'm London born ,and now in my seventies, we have a family saying,I have never heard any one else use, when it's very dark, or there is a black stormy sky. It's as black as Newgates knocker. Have used this expression for years, I recently saw an old Victorian photograph of Newgate Prison , and low and behold ,it did have an enormous black door knocker.
It's hard to understand these phrases, I'm trying to learn to use them in each context but I seem to only remember a few simple phrases.BTW,I heard a song called "head in the clouds" it's pretty good and suits my music taste 😉🤔
