Loved your discussion! I've been considering reading this, and I think you've sold me on it even more than I already was.

This book is a GREAT BOOK. It's not supposed to be subtle.

I had similar problems. I also didn't think there was enough difference between the different characters' voices, even though he did use all those different perspectives, first and second and third person. That passage you read could have been a poem, and maybe should have been. I felt the same heavy-handedness and creaking of the structure, and not so much with the interludes, they actually worked for me, because I think there are a lot of people that don't have the history and background, it was more the plot itself that became very heavy-handed. I'm glad i read it, but it's not very memorable.

Interesting take. I think the book is more memorable for the promise I think it shows than for any single aspect. I did think there were some excellent stuff in the book though it was a little inconsistent. Its still fresh in my mind though so you may be right. It might fade more quickly than I think. Thanks for watching.

I agree completely. I was wowed by Orange's writing, but the novel suffered from too many characters and issues.

Yes. It was just a little too ambitious plot and character wise. Thank you for watching and commenting

That passage you read was really beautiful! This was such an interesting and in depth discussion. I haven't read it or even heard of it before this review, but it sounds really lovely. I'll forgive a lot of issues in story for some beautiful writing.

Thank you for watching and commenting. There is some beautiful writing in the book, but the subject matter of the book is pretty dark and gritty.

I agree with almost everything you said! Loved the passage you shared, it was definitely one of my favorites! A question I came up with from hearing your review is about the issue of the authors voice /message/lesson being “too clear”. Why is that a bad thing for a novel? I feel like getting to understand the point of view of Tommy Orange through out the but is the reason why I was so into the book, I felt like he himself was telling me the a bigger story, with the help of a bunch of smaller individual, compelling stories.

      Thank you!
I would say if you liked hearing the voice of Tommy Orange speaking clearly through the characters then that is great. Don't worry about what I think if you liked the book and it spoke to you. I believe what I meant was that, for me, Orange's voice overriding the voice of several of his characters detracted from those characters as individuals. It didn't detract from the fact that I thought the book was pretty great.

Thank you for an excellent review. Although I was going to avoid this book because of all the hype, I just might give it a try based on your discussion. Thanks.

There has been a lot of hype and that usually makes me wary of books as well. I'm not sure many books live up to that kind of thing, but this is a good book. Thank you for watching and commenting.
