    I understand your views and understand your skepticism about Trump when it comes to power. But as an Belgian I will say right away: he is right about immigration. It is too much in too little time. You speak about 12 million or more on 300(?) million American people. What about 70 million in 15 years time? Or 20 years? I know Trump is right about immigration because it doesn't work here either. Western Europe is getting more (far) right. It has this particular reason for it's growth. I don't support it, but I understand why.

  • @nellesify
    @nellesify Годину тому

    About (illegal) immigration. Lots of thoughts. Many questions. Those people coming illegal to your country. Doesn't the taxpayers pay for their housing, food, social security when they come in the country? Do they all want to work? How do you know they don't want to profit from your country? Do they pay taxes? This is the reason why I think Western Europe is getting more right (or Republican sided). Because being open to the world doesn't necessarily invite the right people. In Belgian prisons the amount of non Western European inmates is more than 70%. The social security is crumbling under non workers, profiting of the system. And illegal immigrants, who just don't contribute. As a country, it just can't keep up. And who says that these immigrants will give back to the American economy when working. Here in Belgium there's many Polish men working in construction who will live in an apartment with 10 people, to send a a big part of their wages back to their family in Poland, to be used in their economy.

  • @nellesify
    @nellesify 2 години тому

    Can I be the devil's advocate here and ask your opinions to some thoughts I had by some of your statements? I am looking at this from a 40 year old living in Belgium, which has liberal views. I would say that we are socialists to this day, although the right is gaining more and more support. So about the tax cuts for the rich under Trump. Do you think if the the rich would be taxed more, they would keep their businesses in America? Wouldn't it be wise for them to keep their riches, relocate to another country with cheaper labour, cheaper taxes which in the long run would cost them much less money? And with unemployment for Americans. That sure happened here. Especially in automobile industries and anything to do with textile. Tax cuts for the rich, I do get what you want to say with that, but maybe Trump is trying to keep the industries in America and people to keep their jobs? Because compared to other countries, America is expensive ( W-Europe too). You give to the rich to keep the rich.

Frustrated to no end when looking at the polls or even just listen to people and their skewed view of Trump's 'policies' on the apparent big issues for voting Republicans and the undecided( have they been living in a cave??) the border ( Trump killed the bipartisan bill) and the economy ( check your bank account, if you aren't a millionaire, you won't benefit, once again). All this bull swirling around him leaves no time or interest in congress, politics or even the public with policies that are crippling and in some cases killing the poor- housing, education, and the abject failure of the healthcare system in America. Thank you again for using your platform to reach out and taking the eventual flak, the best I can do is bang my head against the wall and that's not helping anyone.

    In Percival Everett’s "James," the interplay of identity and history prompts us to question: Slave, or Slav? Is it slave language, or Yiddish? Jim, or Me? James, or I am? The satire and psychology are sophisticated, showcasing why Everett is regarded as both dark and masterful. In his "retelling" of Huckleberry Finn, Everett suggests that Huck serves as the alter ego of Samuel Clemens, who adopted the pen name Mark Twain-paralleling Jim’s transformation into James. Here, Huck emerges as the true "Slav," as his family’s lineage traces back to colonial immigration from England to America, arriving not as free men but as indentured servants, bound by "slave-like" conditions. Interestingly, Clemens’ mother, Jane de Lampton, may have Slavic (possibly Jewish) roots, further complicating our understanding of identity in the text. This nuanced exploration highlights Everett’s genius, inviting readers to reevaluate the intersections of race, history, and self. Percival's James is indeed Samuel Clemens himself, confessing.

    Good video! A long story from a different perspective. One year I had a student who was obviously militantly disinterested in my class (basically writing about what you've read). I'd said a couple times that students could read what they wanted. One day he asked if he could read books about cars, obviously expecting to be shot down. I said "Sure, you bet." His paper was not too good, mostly just saying he loved the book. We sat down and again he was expecting the worst. I congratulated him on enjoying the book and asked what he liked about it. As he gradually explained I kept drawing him out and he went into extensive detail about the various cars discussed. Finally I said, "I wish all that had been in your paper." Dumbfounded he asked if I really wanted to read that. Yep. I had a happy camper for the rest of the semester and his writing gradually improved as he tried to do a good job. I like that your channel is so open to a variety of viewpoints. Reading is a big tent.

    Not usually fond if posthumously published or publishing of an infirmed author's work (Harper lee). This certainly sounds interesting, although seems like all Hemingway's women are crazy or conniving. Why so long after his death was it published? I still prefer when he writes without women characters. I love The Old Man And The Sea, which I understand most Hemingwayites don't. Weren't there subtle references to Hemingway in Wonder Boys like the lost manuscript and Joe DiMaggio?

      I’m not sure why this novel was published so long after his death. I suspect it has something to do with its content and the necessary editing process. I like Hemingway’s women characters. I know he presents them from a patriarchal pov, but to me they are the most interesting, because they almost always subvert the patriarchy.

    I've had a similar experience as you. I think it's important for viewers to distinguish "This creator loves every book they read" vs "This creator only talks about books they like." If my experience of work is negative, it's so often an underwhelming "Oh, I guess I didn't love that. That's a shame. Oh well, plenty of books in the library." It's only when I feel like my criticism has a tinge of "I would have loved this book if..." or "Based on my preferences I should have loved this, but...." In those examples, I'll probably make a video sharing my thoughts, but otherwise I don't think there's anything wrong with having a mostly-positive bias in the content we make.

    A thoughtful address of these concerns; much appreciated. I rarely have a completely negative regard for a book because I realize that effort had to go into its composition and publication. And even if the book is not to my liking, it might be well be for another, and that's perfectly valid for them. The exceptions to these general approaches would be when a book is utterly repugnant from an ideological point of view. But even works that are problematic (such as 'Gone With the Wind') still might have merit for sheer storytelling or for historical or cultural import. Works of art are multivalent in their functions and values, and these in turn are historically mutable. On the subject of bad reviews, I can say that some of my favorite reviews from my single favorite film critic, Jonathan Rosenbaum (formerly of the 'Chicago Reader') are of those films he dislikes. The review can be instructive and even a pleasure to read in itself even if the work under discussion is unsuccessful.

    I’m with you on this one. After finishing it, I was surprised to find the endless positive reviews for it when I found it repetitive, contrived, and self-indulgent, full of opinions on theoretical physics that are undoubtedly informed by today’s fashion to make his protagonists seem more enlightened. The Kennedy conspiracy stuff is bonkers. Stella Maris is even worse, at least in terms of self-indulgence. It comes off to me like a pseudo-intellectual treatise by Eric Weinstein. Supposedly it took him 40 years to write. It felt like, to me, that it took him 40 years to publish. I think he knew better.

    I appreciate your thoughts, as always, Brian! However, I am not a fan of the broad, vague accusation that BookTube has a toxic positivity problem. Unless specific channels are called out, it’s a baseless claim. I know of channels far bigger than mine who likely receive free items from publishers, but I don’t know of any channel creators who fake reading enjoyment. If that does happen, I think it’s far more likely the exception than the rule.

    • @BookishTexan
      @BookishTexan 5 днів тому

      I don’t know of any who do that either. I certainly don’t think I watch any such channels. But I imagine that some exist because I think the temptation is too great for both the publisher and the channel creator.

    my knee jerk reaction is because, much like in the rest of society, wokeism has parasitically invaded the publishing industry. it has nothing to do with the gender of the author, it's the topics of the books being put out.

      Publishing is a business. They publish the books that will make them the most money. Looks like for many of them that has paid off. I didn’t realize large multimillion dollar companies making business decisions they believe would maximize their profits was “wokeism”

    I think we forget also that people tend to choose books they think they are going to enjoy - not many people set out to find books they won't find engaging. Hence its much more likely that we will see positive reviews. Having said that - people are also entitled to their opinion of Book tubers. If one thinks certain people are doing this just for profit, and for the wrong reasons - dont watch them! There are plenty of excellent content creators out there and it is also the responsibility of publishers and authors to make sure they are connecting to the appropriate ones.

    • @BookishTexan
      @BookishTexan 5 днів тому

      Your first point is a great one. I think the ability of people to pick books they will like probably explains most of the positivity. And of course we should only watch channels that we like or feel are sincere. I’m do think there is some value in video creators reflecting on their own content and motivations.

    Not seen the video, but from your discussion i have to say, i think with the big channels it may be true, they may have been paid to say nice things. I tend to just get rid of books that i did not enjoy and actually do not think about talking about it and as i type you said my thoughts about the authors feelings. Plus the fact i only talk about 10% of the books i read tbh, i must get better at that. I stay away from hyped books and most of the time i am disappointed, learnt my lesson the hard way.

I think there are some people who are part of the fabric of the modern book publishing industry who are pushing sales and there are people who are not and just talking about books they like. I am another person who picks with care so my reviews are usually, but not always positive. Even if I am taking a chance on a book that might not be my cup of tea, I will at least have reason to believe it will be interesting. I wouldn't choose to do a standalone review about a book I felt had no value or interest. I can have the opposite problem to seeing only the positives in a book that others have enthused about, as I can be disappointed if my expectations were high and I will then be more critical. Never had a free book but have had authors I don't know personally comment a couple of times.

    Similar drama circulates around the board gaming community regarding the positive feedback loop of "publishers send free games to reviewer, reviewer gives glowing reviews, publishers send more free games to reviewer, etc." Things become really spicy when it comes out that a popular reviewer has threatened publishers with negative reviews of their games if money isn't sent! 😧

    Great topic! The reason I started my channel was to talk about books I enjoy so I’m generally searching out books that I’m pretty sure I’ll like. If I truly dislike something, I’m probably not going to have the desire to discuss it. I don’t consider myself a critic so I’d hate to give the impression that I know enough to properly critique a book. As you said it’s subjective and all I can report is how I felt about the book but I definitely don’t hide any negative feelings that I have but I try to determine how or why someone else might enjoy it. I’m actually editing a somewhat negative video right now on a few books that I just can’t understand why they are so popular. No toxic positivity in that one. 😂😅
